BACFest 2013 update

We do have jacks, tools, an A&P lined up, a big hanger, and an offer of sponsored lunch if we do this. I am thinking of a place to fit it into the plans.
 
Update on Sept 2013 BACFest planning. We are working out the final details, food plan, and should have registration live soon. We have an application in to the USCG for a special tour of their rescue training facility. Key speaker lined up. Side trips and events for pilots, non-pilots, sun or rain. I hope you all decide to spend a few extra days enjoying the beach and the food and all the fun.
 
While the event and activity planning has been moving forward I have gotten behind in one important part, the financial end. I am hoping to have the cost estimates ready for board review soon and the quickly open registration. I am hoping to have the main activity list ready at that time. Still there are many great options for beach fun also. September is usually a great time to enjoy the beach and wildlife here.
Keep your eyes ready for registration soon.... Plan on staying a while!
 
As announced in Brad Mitchell's article we will have an exciting speaker on BACFest Saturday! Gary Powers will be speaking about the U2 shoot down incident (Gary's father) and the Cold War. Gary is a great speaker and it is an incredible story of aviation history as told from inside the pilot's family. Registration will be open soon and there will be a bonus for early registration.
Although the "Official Events" will run from Thursday to Sunday we still have lots to do for anyone that wants to show up a few days early. There are some great local aviation museums and a marine science center. Some local BACers are willing to act as tour guides and I have lined up some optional access to sailing, kayaks, paddleboards for anyone that wants an active day or two.
 
Those going to Oshkosh this year should take a special interest in the museum there. If memory serves me right, I saw a special display there once on the U2 incident and it was very interesting. This would give anyone a good back ground before hearing Mr. Powers talk about his father's incident.
 
The BACFest Article has been updated and the registration fee posted. The ability to register is due to be set up soon. The schedule continues to evolve. The USCG base tour looks like it will be set up for Friday morning. We are now working on permission to land and taxi to the facility rather than the FBO across the field. About half the hotel rooms we blocked are already reserved. The BAC midatlantic team is cooking up lota of options and of course Virginia Beach in September is always great. Food, friends, airplanes, Beach..... Priceless!
 
Great, maybe we can get a informal head count going. Andrea and I are already booked at the hotel. I know on the planning thread we had a working tally. This weekend should be HUGE . Thanks for all the work Paul!!!
 
At one time there was talk about going to Virginia Beach for the entire week and there would be some things planned prior the Thursday of BAC Fest. Has that thinking been lost or eliminated? I don't want to register at the hotel before we know what if anything is going on before Thursday.
 
The posts here on this thread have been mainly focused on the Thursday to Sunday events. But we are still working on activities for the pre-BACFest days. Some BACers in the area have volunteered to be local guides for trips. Depending upon who is here, their desires, and the weather we have available :
Fly to Tangier Island
Drive to Mitary Aviation Museum
Colonial Williamsburg fly or drive Historical, Shopping, Jamestown Island.
Outer Banks of North Carolina. For beaches, food, surfing, ecotours.
Kayak, Paddleboard lessons, rentals
Nice beach weather
Cookout on the beach
Seafood Restaraunts
Virginia Aquarium
Downtown Norfolk and the Battleship Wisconsin , Zoo, Nauticus museum
Remember that the Hotel will accept changes or cancellations without penalty up to close to date of arrival.
All of these things can be arranged easily once we know what people want to do. My plan is to organize these events later, only because I am not sure what will be wanted. If anyone wants to be sure of activities for the day please send me a personal message and I will set it up and post it for others to join.
 
I may have missed it in past posts, but I see Landmark Aviation's fuel price is $7.30/gal. Are they going to give much of a discount to BAC attendees? KONX southeast of there has fuel at $5.25/ga. Are there going to be tie down fees at Landmark in addition to their fuel charges?
 
Thanks for the questions. Landmark has offered us a $1.00/gallon fuel discount. Still not cheap, so stopping somewhere is a good choice. As with all bigger airports with 24 hour services the prices are higher. For less expensive fuel you can look at KONX in the sounth, KPVG just to the west, KMFA ( melfa, VA) just to the north. Theere are other fees at KORF also. Landing, tie down, probably security etc. When I last checked they were all pretty small fees, and Landmark has told me that we will incur only once each of the Airport fees so we should not be charged for each additional landing etc.
If someone is opposed to these fees options nearby (30 minute drive) would be KPVG or KCPK. But I think they might impose some fees of their own.
Personally I understand that some of these fees are likely one way or another and I suppose is one of the reasons they have offered to help us out. I do suggest calling ahead if you have questions about fees. (757)857-3463 . But I will try to get an email from them posted to thr site soon.
 
Landmark will impose a total Fee for BACFest planes of $20.00 for the entire event. This is all we will each pay for landing, tie down, security, Ramp etc for the duration of the event. So we can all feel free to fly in or out as desired without additional fees. I do suggest that you bring some tie down ropes as we may overwhelm the normal number of Tied down planes.
And Landmark will be giving us $1.00/Gallon discount from their posted rateson 100LL fuel.
 
Another item that came up. Although there is some transportation available. Landmark has a 15 seat Van hat will be somewhat available.the hotel will pick up at airport for a fee. I am hoping to have plenty of transportation available, but obviously nothing is more convenient that some members having rental cars available. Landmark tells me that some private parties have gotten good deals online that beat what they can offer (38.00/ day weekday, 19.00/day weekend). If some of you want to share a car rental or have found good deals online it might be useful to post the info here.
 
The date varies a bit each year. Originally this weekend was chosen this year because the Blue Angels were scheduled to be here and some had a Beech Affiliation.
 
If anyone gets flight training magazine by AOPA there is a great photo of KTGI on tangier island Va on page 16but of the October 2013 issue. This is where MidAtlantic member Alan White is planning on leading a pre bacfest flight on Wednesday Sept 18 2013
 
If our plans work out, Dan Kirby and I will fly from Ohio to Tangier Island on Wednesday. What time should we arrive to join the festivities?
