BACFest 2017

Orbiting Earth
We are getting our first good look at the weather for BACFest and it's promising. For those of us that are flying a good distance from the west, there is a cold front that will be passing through on Tuesday, and it looks like it will be a quick one with good weather behind it. I plan on following it through before the next one shows up. A VFR pilots dream comes true.

Hmm, maybe I should drive the 90 miles to KEWB. Me and Wx, ya know. Remember Gatlinburg and Ithaca

I'm with Tom, my wife on the other hand after just going through IRMA and 60 years in Miami is not
But, I remember Gaitlinburg-- very very wet and low ceilings, but we still had good time
Just might need to consider different mode of transportation but hard to say No to Tom C

We and Muses fly to Boston tomorrow commercial and will spend a few days on the Cape. We'll be at the BACFest Hotel on Tuesday. Keep an eye on Jose, mid-week could get interesting.

The Sierra is staying at home. Schedule is tight this year and I'm having compressions rechecked while we're gone. We had a low #2 at annual but engine monitor numbers were fine. But on the last longer flight recently the problem cylinder was been running about 75-100F cooler than normal on EGT. We planned to recheck at 10 hours and we're around that. So the local guy is going to redo compressions and bore scope the problem cylinder and we'll take it from there.

I love the trips to Alexander City but this is a good way to make the initial contact with the on field shop (which has a very good reputation in general, just not many mice go by) and we are planning to fly to Nashville next month so want to know everything is ship shape.

Our flight path doesn't look as good as it did when I looked at it on Tuesday, but right now we should have a clear day to arrive on Thursday when BACFest starts.

Linda and I will fly commercial tomorrow and have been watching weather closely. Saturday through Monday will be nice. Looks like tropical storm watches will be issued for the coast for Tuesday and Wednesday. Storm will be gone by BACFest and the sun will shine on the BAC.

We are watching weather and adjusting our plan accordingly. Priority here is to find shelter for 08Romeo for the forecast windsmonday and Tuesday. Construction has us out on the ramp for another month. :(

Tentative plan is Wednesday arrival but it maybe a Thursday go day. Safety first, it's only a 2.5 hour flight for us.

FYI there will be a TFR active from the 17th - 21st for New York City area, thanks POTUS.

Gary (et al) moving your airplane is a great idea.

I was at a Wings meeting yesterday and we discussed this very thing. Now that I have been living in a Hurricane area for a few years I understand what a Hurricane actually is - and how the winds are so dangerous. I was telling the other people about our club and the offers that came in from all over to park other people's airplanes at their airport. Moving inland 200 miles can make a world of difference in the strength of winds experienced, and we would all trade a few hours in a car to drive home in exchange for not dealing with insurance claims :-)

Inbound for BACFEST departing UK shortly. Arriving on 20 Sep. Can't wait. Fly Safe.

Jerry,

You are leaving today from the UK to arrive on September 20. That's 4 days from now. Are you swimming?

I haven't spent much time flying in the northeast. Foreflight was going to send me over LaGuardia. Now that's inside the inner circle of the TFR, so that's out. My next option is JFK which is in the outer circle, but shouldn't be an issue as I'm going to be IFR. Anyone have any thoughts about my chances of getting cleared to fly ENO-V16-JFK-V1-DPK (or GPS-Direct)? Or is it like Philadelphia where I always find that they'd much rather I go to Ohio?

My experience in & around the DC - NYC corridor is that NYC controllers (and likely all others) are much more accommodating than Philly controllers. Philly seem to be the least GA friendly I've ever talked with. :(

Guys for those of us unable to attend, please post photos, flights to BACFest stories, BF stories etc. Thanks in advance.

I had to edit as I forgot the most important thing; Tom, thank you for doing this for the club. Just reading the BACFest information it is clear you have spent much of your time to make this not just a flyin but a true adventure. My only question is how does anyone follow this? Great job Tom and those that helped Tom out.

Don't be deterred by the New York TFR.
Usually, VFR or IFR if you are "sqwaking and talking" you get to go through.

New York usually takes you right over JFK at 5000 or six thousand feet. Ifr reroutes in The area often have a bunch of fixes that only add three minutes to a trip.
But really well worth diverting to take the Hudson River trip.

TFRs and Hurricanes

Getting to New Bedfud from the Mid-Atlantic area will require flexible plans. With POTUS in Manhattan instead of out in Bedminster, I believe the TFR through Sept 21st cuts out the Hudson River corridor option. I was hoping to leave Tuesday but arrival is not likely Tuesday. I may still leave Tuesday and take more of an inland route and just get as far as Jose will allow, possibly a route like ABE SWF HFD, maybe arriving Wednesday, more likely Thursday.

What's a couple more nights in hotels going to hurt?

I'm thinking the Hudson Corridor tour will be beautiful on the return leg after BACFest.

Keep us posted on your plans. We may meet you somewhere or perhaps go to Bermony for a day. I do think that a call to NY tracon might be needed To check status of the VFR corridor. When not traveling they have kept it open in past once he is on the ground.
