BACFest 2017

We are still planning on flying up Wednesday. Probably over Pennsylvania for a stop so we have lots of extra gas when we get there and will approach from the west to see what the weather is doing as we get closer. Lots of alternate options.

We are arriving via commercial flight to Providence. Forecast of 27 gusting to 46! Don't know what the airline's cutoff is, hopefully higher than 46!

Another POTUS TFR was issued today, it goes through Sunday, 9/24. The good news is that it is a Bedminster, NJ TFR, so the Hudson River corridor may be accessible again. I haven't read the details yet, so make sure it has the wording regarding the Hudson exclusion.

Unforeseeable events will delay my arrival to Friday, hopefully by Beech, possibly by airline. Save me a seat at dinner Friday.

Bob,
Where did you see the above addt'l TFR posted? I just checked the FAA website for TFR's, and nothing listed there...

Dave

Dave,

That's a good question. Here's the email from FAA this afternoon, but click on their link and NOTC7377 is not on their list.

Bob

Bob,

I can't speak to whatever airline you are traveling on, but as I recall, our cut-off was 50 knots and the direct crosswind depended on conditions, but generally 30 knots with reductions for conditions. Max tailwind (take-off and landing) was 10 knots. I have seen operations right at or below the 50 knots, and it can get interesting. I recall one day at JFK where about every third aircraft was getting in. It just depended on the conditions right before or at touchdown.

As a rule, I would not expect your flight to depart if they were not reasonably sure that the winds predicted at the time of arrival would fall within their operational capabilities.

Paul and I jump into his Sierra this morning and head north from Norfolk (KORF). Today is our travel day. Tentative plan is to land KABE and then study that last leg into KEWB. No problem stopping our eastward trek at any time and jumping into a rental car to arrive at New Bedford. A big positive today is fantastic flying weather to the west, which will give us multiple options to transfer from wings to wheels.

Winds forecasted at New Bedford are not promising but there is a good chance we will be BACfest participants tonight ! Now .... where did I put that ten bucks ........ ?

Unfortunately, I have to bow out of BACfest due to last minute non-weather related conflict. If I was going, it looks like I would have driven... the Skipper has no business flying in the conditions forecast for New Bedford :)

Bob,

POTUS TFR was just posted valid until Sunday evening, as he'll be staying in NJ until then. This so-called President spend more time playing golf, then running the country. I read somewhere that he's almost been in either Fl and NJ more days then he's actually been staying in the White House. Wish I could get a job like that...

Well, when it rains it pours. No pun intended. Nancy and I are going to have to bow out of the BACFest this year. My mother-in-law has suddenly taken ill and we will not be able to attend. I was looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new people in the club. For those of you that are there, have a great time.

Pat and Nancy, sorry to miss you but best wishes to Nancy's Mom. See you locally? I have to drive to BAC Fest, my stabilator is still not installed due to myriad little things.
Later,
Lisa

Thanks for the kind words Lisa. If you get some time and you guys want to stop by the house feel free to do so. 25 Page Pl., Bloomfield, NY 14469. Love to see the stabilator . Pat

Here is a picture of the entrance to the harbor at New Bedford and one of the huge curved hurricane gates that can close to protect the harbor. To my knowledge, they were not closed for Tropical Storm Jose.

Here is a picture of one of the Revolutionary War reenactors explaining the history of Fort Phoenix to the BAC crowd. The second is a picture of one of the lady reenactors describing how cooking was done in that era.

In this picture, the reenactor is demonstrating how canons were loaded and fired in the Revolutionary War era. In order to fire a canon, one has to be licensed to fire one.

One of the couples who attended this BACFest for the very first time were Jerry and Ruth Neild of the United Kingdom. We were very privileged and pleased to get to know them as were so many of those attending. They were both officers in the Royal Air Force (RAF). Ruth was in charge of the dietary department of a hospital, but gave that up some time ago as two officers were not to serve in the same place. Jerry is the commander of a fighter squadron and the two of them own a Sierra. The BAC spared no expense to welcome these two from the U.K. at Fort Phoenix.
