As we prepare to head to Dubuque, Iowa next month for BACFest 2015, it is time to start thinking and planning our BACFest for 2016. Tentative dates for the event September 29, 2016 to October 2, 2016. We also need to think about a location for the event. It would be wonderful to have any submissions for a BACFest location to have a name(s) submitted for the event chairperson(people). Our BACFest 2015 has 3 local event supporters/chairpeople (Denis, Jim and Matt) who are "shepherding" the planning of event activities.

Here are some suggested locations thus far:
Pigeon Forge, TN
Host Airport: KGKT - Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge Airport
Closest Commercial Airport - Knoxville, TN (TYS)
Potential Host Hotels:
Option1: Dollywood's Dream More Resort
Option 2: Inn at Christmas Place
Comments: Great Resort area with lots of activities including Dollywood (Dolly Parton's Park) Appalachian-themed park, also Country Music venues, dinner theaters, etc...

Myrtle Beach, SC
Host Airport: KCRE - Grand Strand Airport
Closest Commercial Airport - Myrtle Beach Airport (MYR)
Potential Host Hotels:
Option 1: BayWatch Resort and Conference Center
Option 2: Ocean Drive Beach and Golf Resort
Comments: Great resort area, Ocean, Golfing, etc...

Tullahoma, TN
Host Airport: KTHA - Tullahoma Regional
Closest Commercial Airport - Chattanooga (CHA) or Nashville (BNA)
Potential Host Hotels:
Hampton Inn
Holiday Inn Express

Comments: Home of the Beechcraft Heritage Museum on the grounds of KTHA

These are some other location suggestions:
Lancaster, PA (close to Hershey, PA, PA Dutch, Sensenich Propeller)
Erie, PA

I look forward to more discussion through this thread on a suitable location for BACFest 2016.

Thank you!

If Myrtle Beach is selected there is good service at KMYR as well as KCRE. and less crowded. A few miles apart but lots more room.

Great feedback Paul. It has been many years since I have been to Myrtle Beach. I suggested KCRE thinking that it might be less crowded from a traffic perspective as well as its proximity to the suggested host hotel. I will place KMYR on the list as a point of discussion and decision-making should Myrtle Beach be the selected location.

I thought a primary item in the selection process was a focal person willing to host and set it up?

Hasn't Cloyd offered to host and pay for everything himself, at New Orleans?

You hit-the-nail-on-the-head Bill.... I'm hoping that with the suggestions, I get event chairpeople willing to step up. As far as Cloyd and N.O., .....shoot, I have not seen any posts to date... :D

Dave:

Since you;re already scouting NOLA the week before BF15, apply for citizenship and host it yourself!!! LOL

Rap,
NIce try!!!

No, thanks. I leave that to someone else. I would like to see new locations, rather than ones that have been previously visited. I think that a location should be where many members could easily fly their planes and also have close commercial airports for others. I agree with Chris, that having the people in place to host the event is top of the list.

I agree I'd like to see new places for BACFest. That leaves out San Antonio, Myrtle Beach and the Gatlinburg (Sevierville) area.

How about Savannah, Georgia or maybe the Florida Gulf coast? Seems like it's time for the Eastern US again.

I think that Boston would be a big draw. I'd use it as the kick off for a New England fall color vacation. Wife wants Canton, OH or Cooperstown, NY. I'm not that big on sports, but either would be different. I agree not to go back to a place we've been. What ever place is decided, there has to be something there to do other than shop and eat. Las Vegas would seem to be a natural place to do this, but no one seems to be interested. Pretty easy place to fly to. Not much in the way of high terrain the valley LAS sits in is big and flat. Oh yeah, Travers City, MI. I've been there in October and it was gorgeous. The town is a bit artsie fartsie, but there is the resort, vinyards, Grand Travers Bay boat cruises (some with entertainment). I might be able to get a short tour of the Coast Guard facility (my son was there for 4 years). If the weather turns sour, there is always snowmobiling, ice fishing and cross country skiing. The seem to have a good amount of festivals during the year, one might coincide with BAC Fest. I would think Green Bay would also have a bit to do there. Milwaukee? There's a possibility, we hit a couple brewery tours and who cares there ain't much else to do. Just about any "Great Lakes" towns would be interesting. Like Dubuque, there are other River Towns. Natchez, MS comes to mind. I stopped at the airport for gas once. Very pretty setting.

Vegas would be fun. I've never been there. Well I've never been to a lot of the places listed in this thread. Flying to Vegas would be fun though. Lots of scenery and mountains.

2006 - Wichita, KS
2007 - Myrtle Beach, SC
2008 - Santa Maria, CA
2009 - Gatlinburg, TN
2010 - San Antonio, TX
2011 - Ithaca, NY
2012 - Gulf Shores, AL
2013 - Virginia Beach, VA
2014 - Portland, OR
2015 - Dubuque, IA

I have promoted the idea of a miniBACFest in the late spring for a couple of years now. Perhaps as we look at all the possibilities for the next BACFest, we might want to pick out a spring miniBACFest. The spring one would not have to have any BOD or annual meetings. It would be a lot less formal and focus on getting us and our mice together.

It's hard to beat Asheville NC in the fall of the year. Nothing like Appalachian Mountains when the leaves turn. Not to mention craft brews, lively downtown seen and of course bluegrass everywhere you turn. Most of all some of the best trout fishing anyone could ask for, pretty much all I care about and the bluegrass O' and the beer. You can have the downtown seen.

I like Asheville! Airport is out a little way from downtown. Side benefit, Marty is missing NC on his map.
