How about a VIDEO forum?

Flight Levels
I kicked this over here in Fly ins, cuz the 122.75 forum doesn't show up.

Been kicking this idea around for a while, and after noticing "markweiss"'s shout about posting a link to a specific video..... I was wondering if there was any interest in a special forum for members to post videos directly on the BAC server. Of course that would have to depend largely on the size and speed of the server itself, but with hard large drives being soooo cheap, and the majority (I beleive) of members having fast internet access, would it be worth pursuing this further?

Admin .... please chime in

I for one have a LARGE video (slideshow, really) of a trip I made over the northern Cascades with some music from OneSixRight I would love to share, and everyone that sees it is touched by the scenery and music. While it is a large file (700mb in DVD format and 150mb in MP4.... 15 minutes runtime), the max size for the FILE UPLOADS is 5 mb. But the scenery over those amazing mountains, and the clouds below .... really reminds me of just why I love to fly!! And I know I would love to see others' videos.

Just a thought I would throw out there[/b]

Thom-

I like the idea but I don't have a clue about the site capabilites or what all is involved.

Tim Flight is the man to answer that and I'm sure he'll fill us in when he gets a minute.

I was thinking more in the line of BACers' personal clips like the one I mentioned I'd like to share. But perhaps maintenance clips or short videos, favourite moments captures on film, anything that might entertain an aviation / airpane owner.

I can see where this could become problematic from the administrator's (tflight) perspective, purely from the size of video by nature. I know youtube is a possibility, but wow, the small size and poor quality wouldn't do justice to the kinda stuff I'd like to share.

Funny how, even though I own a plane, and can go out and do it anytime I want....... I still get a kick out of watching something as simple as someone's else's recorded flying, like base to final all the way through to touchdown.

Well,
Having never gotten anywhere in trying to get this idea flying, (5 months?) I thought I'd post a lower quality of the video I had mentioned onto YouTube. It's still large.... and likely will require a high speed internet connection, but I think many (if not most) of us do.

So, if you wanna hear some great soundtrack from One Six Right, accompanying a trip over the most rugged mountains in the US, a round trip from LaGrande Oregon (my home field) to Skagit regional airport in Northern Washington on the Puget Sound check it out here. I had to spli it into two parts for length, total of the two 19 min.

I would love to hear your feedback. Maybe this will stimulate some interest in the original topic, of having a dedicated forum here on BAC for just such content.

Beautiful, Thom!

You tell a good story of a great flight. And you fly such magnificent country. I have to get out there to see it for myself. Until then I'll keep looking at your odyssey and dream.

Great video Thom. Makes me want to fly right now!

I've got some killer pictures of the Cascades, the ones in Oregon. A friend of mine is putting enough together to publish. We've taken two photo flights so far, with more to come. If anyone is interested, I can email them.

I think we'll take the video camera next flight. We'll see what we get... base leg to touchdown huh? Better make it a squeaker. (Mice squeak... nevermind)

I agree..... Even something as elementary as someone else's flight (even base to final to touchdown) is interesting for someone with the passion for flying. And I really think that the majority of us probably have high speed internet.

That's why I even brought up the idea of a video forum in the first place. Sure.... it could be abused, and sure.... it may need some moderation,.... but we have a great group here that would make good use of such a forum. And the fact is .... that if every single member uploaded a video (not likely), it would still easily store on a 1TB hard drive, and they are getting rediculously cheap right now. I just bought one for $129.

I, for one, LOVE to watch clips and videos about flight on youtube, but it sure would be better if it was more mouse oriented!!

So....Tim Flight .....

What's your opinion or suggestion on this idea? Is it worth pursuing? Would donations of a large hard drive make the idea any more do-able? Please ..... Chime in. If you think it would not be too supported, or otherwise too difficult to setup/maintain, I'll drop the notion.
