Climbing to Cruise
Hi folks, I'm planning on a first-time visit to KLUX on Saturday for the BBQ. Haven't seen anyone talking about this one yet. Any pointers for this newbie flying up from Vero Beach FL?

Looking forward to meeting my fellow BAC members!

should be nice straight forward flight up to KLUX. Good runways, cheaper fuel than most places around Ga ,etc. and very nice group of people. I will be flying up from KPDK (dekalb-peachtree,atlanta area) to the BBQ. Have a safe trip. fred

Don't get real worried about it, but the wind at KLUX is not always what's on ATIS. The runway is in a bit of a bowl with some trees blocking the wind. If there is a strong crosswind you can get a swirling effect on short final. Nothing to be concerned about but it can catch you off-guard. If you get a glimpse of the flags at the National Guard building on top of the hill next to the airport they will usually give you a pretty good idea of what the winds are on the ground.

Have fun! It's a great bunch at KLUX!!

Gary, Watch the MOA around savannah. those guys cannot take a joke! Anyway its all easy enough, As Norton mentioned the wind at the end of runway 26 can be interesting, but the armory flags tell a truer tale. Se y'all Saturday.- Billy

Leaving tomorrow morning from CT should be there around 5?? Hope it's a good turn out. ken

Thanks for the words folks. Looking forward to this one. Got a feeling I'm going to leave with more than I arrived with--at least when it comes to "greatly needed parts".

It's not so much the MOA's near Savannah as the restricted airspace at Fort Stewart. Stay east of all of them, maintain 2500 or more over Hunter Army Airfield, (and the antenna farm to the west of it) then stay west of the MOA's near Beaufort MCAS and you'll be fine, and headed in the right direction. In fact, a flight along the coastline from Florida is beautiful, and keeps you honest. Start to head direct to KLUX abeam 72GA and you should be in good shape.

Thanks everyone for coming to the BBQ. Was a good time. Hope to see you all soon at the next event. Will keep you posted.

Sorry I wasn't there. When FSS started telling me about the IFR conditions in North Florida/Southern Georgia this morning and said, "VFR flight not recommended", I figured they knew something I didn't. Glad to know things went well. I'll get there yet!
