Level Cruise
Hi All,

I see that the 2013 BACFest is in Virginia Beach. Has the date been set yet? I don't seem to be able to find it.

I will be posting more details once we get more events confirmed. But for those of you that need to plan ahead you might want to save the whole week leading up to BACFest 2013.

We are planning to have lots to do to help make the trip a real vacation. We have beachfront room at $101.00/ night, great seafood waterfront restaurants, dolphin tour boat happy hour, a short flight to the Wright Bros. Airfield and museum in Kitty Hawk NC, flying WW1 and WW2 aircraft museum visit, an Island flight to lunch, maintenance clinic, ATC Tower tour, Colonial Williamsburg for culture, history and Shopping. All this plus available beach activities like swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking etc. Even the Blue Angels and a night airshow at nearby NAS Oceana during our weekend! Top it all off with some great weather (I hope!) and great company.

Lots more in the works so keep your eyes open and see if you can make a few extra days for BACFest 2013 in Norfolk/VA Beach! Note that commercial and fly in traffic will all be coming to KORF where Landmark Aviation is arranging waivers of most fees and a big fuel discount as well as hangar space for our clinics.

Paul,
Va Beach sounds excellent!!!!!! I had talked to several of the members @ BACFest this year and am more than happy to help out with anything you need. We really need to get the Mid-Atlantic more active and I would be more than willing to be of assistance. When you get a chance give me a call @ 703-723-0986.

Thanks John

PS- If you read this early you will notice misspellings. I am deliberately leaving them for Chris to correct. LOL!

This sounds great but, we have now had several east coast BacFests. The costs involved in going to an east coast event is prohibitive for most west coasters. It is not only money but time. We need more central locations. After taking a few trips with my wife, going to Oshkosh another trip back east is a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, it will be real hard to justify another trip like this BAC Fest. I did have some help with the gas and I appreciate Bill S. doing that. Looks like Senior air fares will be in the $600 range plus hotel, food and incidentals. I raided my retirement account to fly the Sierra to BAC Fest this year, I'm not sure I'll be able to do it again with the Autumn months being a big home expense time anyway. Maybe we can have a concurrent fly-in out West for those of us out here back on a budget.

Marty I like to fly to fly ins. If I went, in today's dollars, that would mean about 2800 bucks for fuel alone (Round trip). A little too rich for me.

Yeah, I couldn't consider flying the Sierra to this one. Based on typical winds and my typical cruise speed and fuel burn, I'd have to spend $1435 on fuel, if it was at $6/gal. It would be two days to get there and three long days to get back. So, an additional 5 days of hotels/meals over the cost of BAC Fest hotel and meals. And that is if the weather is good both directions. Now, if I could find 2 or 3 light weights that like to fly and would share costs, it might be a doable thing. The time isn't that important to me. But flying alone, like I did on the way back from BAC Fest, isn't all that much fun. I'd rather not do alone it both ways. So, if someone is looking for an adventure next year and has deep pockets, have them contact me!

While I can certainly understand that the costs of these coast to coast trips are expensive I hope that more west coasters decide to make the trip. I do know that the Board has tried to mix up the locations to provide availability for as many members as possible. But I know that other issues are also considered and played a part in choosing the 2013 meeting location. One item to keep in mind is that commercial flights are available directly to our BACFest airport. Hopefully some long distance travelers can save some money that way.
I am hoping to work with the members that have offered to help and create a week of events that will help make the trip worthwhile.

.
Alternate to 100LL to get to Norfolk, Virginia.

As BACFest 2013 is a year out look for quick member deals from the commercial airlines.

I just bought tickets on AirTran from Boston to San Fransciso going in February for $146 including taxes.
Trip back from Los Angelas to Boston was $146 too. Hard to beat that price

Get your email address on the JetBlue, Southwest, AirTran websites and get info on the "Today Only" deals.

Paul, I know everyone can't be pleased. However, a lot of us only attend fly ins that we can fly too. These east coast flyins place a heavy financial burden on those of us who live out west.

I agree Bob. I have decided to skip some flyins for similar reasons. And I wish I had the time and resources to to fly myself to all the BACFest events that I have attended. While I was not present at the board meeting that made the location decision, I am aware that trying to spread out the BACFEst locations was a consideration and also tue membership distribution. I hope that a group of west coast members put together a plan for the next open BACFest location. I missed the last west coast event and would like another one. But one of the sellng points for Norfolk/Virginia Beach was the choice to fly GA or Commercial into the same Airport close to the hotel and hopefully avoid a car rental and long drive for members that choose to fly airlines to BACFest for whatever reasons. And one other swlling feature was the list of flying , aviation, and general beach activities available might convince some more of us to attend even if GA is not practical.
It sounds like we have a team of local members stepping up to act as tour guides and can help make all the available choices easy to take advantage of.

Paul,

Kudos to you and all the members in the Mid-Atlantic that will help make 2013 BAC-FEST a trip to remember (for those that choose to attend); whether they fly themselves, fly commercial, drive, boat or walk. I bet Brad can attest that putting together the BAC-FEST is a very tiring and exhausting job. It is my understanding that you stepped in on a moment’s notice when the original BAC-FEST venue “fell through”. Thank you, Paul. I would encourage every member to step up and help Paul with YOUR clubs annual FESTIVAL and stop “BELLY-ACHING” about where it is being held. You can certainly volunteer to host BAC-FEST 2014 in your region and I am pretty sure the Board of Directors would welcome your participation. If you can go then go. If you can’t, then at least support those that are volunteering their time and effort to help our club.

One last thought here. Currently plans are being made for elections to the Board of Directors for BAC. This is one good way for members to influence decisions like BACFest locations. If you can't run help find someone that wants to help bring the meeting to your area. If you can make the slight effort required, run for a director slot and help balance out the factors and help make the choices.

It sounds as though we have several volunteers to head up a west coast BACFest for 2014! One of the biggest hurdles is finding someone to head up such an undertaking. Personally, I'm thankful to Paul for being just that guy!

I am willing to take on the job of BACFest 2014 in the west but we have to choose carefully because not many of our eastern members are willing to cross the continental divide. I would like to hear from members about a western location and I will do the leg work to make it happen. Lemme know!
