BACFest 2012 - Gulf Shores, Alabama

I posted some BACFest photos......enjoy!

The best job ever Sir Bradley! Extremely well done! Tip of the hat to all the "DO-ERS!!!!!"

Back in California as of a few minutes ago. Thanks to everyone who attended and double thanks to the crew that did all the work. You know who you are and are there time after time.

Brad, that's not MY Clarity Aloft headset. I've been instructed to keep it in the box, unwrapped, until I return home.

We got home and the house did not burn down! Obvious signs that a party happened (beer in the fridge, Smirnoff in the cupboard, playing cards and other game stuff on the patio table- but to be fair, it was the boys 24th birthday friday) but the house is orderly and reasonably clean, the dogs are content and the fish are all still alive!

So on two fronts, this was hands down an awesome vacation! All y'all made it a fun time, right mix of activities to relaxation time and just the right amount of serious business to keep things working smoothly the rest of the year.

Jeff kept bringing up conversations that he had with some members all the way home-for all the work it took to get him to go with me, you all did a great job of making him want to go to BACFest again and that means a lot!

Candy and I are done with the automobiles phase of the trip other than airport commutes and about to turn in for the night in Nashville. We'll be home to Carlsbad house very late tomorrow (or possibly very early Tuesday - and that is PDT so Candy will be beat) after a hodge podge of equipment (probably a CRJ, a Bus or FLUF, and an EMB-120).

Might be a bumpy climb out of BNA though - there's CB in the forecast right around our departure time...

Sharmalie an Steve got home oky doky 7pm Sunday eve. Not to bad a ride out of jack Edwards, atc helped to keep us clear of any bad stuff, only 1 turn past a major cell that I recall. 8.1 Hobbs time on the way home, that was even with a 30 knot tail wind, had to go up the west side of the mountains then east over the mountains near DC had about 2.5 in the soup. The real mess came in the last 15 miles home ran into moderate turbulence that made Sharmalie unhappy. Really enjoyed all the laughs an company, see you all in VA beach neat year.

Unfortunately I missed Marty's clinic.

I wish I would have been able to be in attendance. Not only would I have learned something about my plane's landing gear, I would have learned the proper attire for conducting a maintenance clinic. I was woefully under dressed back at Wichita and Myrtle Beach.

We're home. Had some car trouble and 5 full on monsoons. Spent night in Alexandria, LA and replaced car battery this AM. Rest of the way was a piece of cake in the sunlight.

As usual, great BACFest!!!!!

After two 2-hour flights and one 4 hour drive Linda and I got home yesterday about 1 a.m. We were tired, but memories of BACFest 2012 lingered and tempered our fatigue. We appreciate all who were instrumental putting on this event including the Board of Directors and especially Brad, Dan & Doug and those of you who helped without getting recognition. Thanks to Marty aka "The Atom Splitter" Vanover for his detailed maintenance class. Thanks to Bill Manhein for his work on finding sources for oil coolers and electric boost pumps for our mice. Thanks to each and every attendee for your friendship and for exchanging ideas. We are looking forward to Virginia Beach and to seeing you again. I hope that those who have not had a chance to attend a BACFest will start planning now and join us. It is the fine people who belong to this club that make it what it is.

Got back to 33j around 11am today. Had a great tail wind. Saw 165 mph ground speed and I was at low cruise power! Flew through clouds, rain, a little turbulence and a 900 foot ceiling at 33j. (Glad I got my Instrument rating!) Enjoyed meeting everybody. Had a great time!

Andrew, David and Bob made it back 10pm Sunday night. Went JKA-MCN-HKY-HWY, mainly in and out of the soup until passing SPA.

We sure enjoyed making a lot of new friendships, and learned more about our plane. The Naval Aviation Museum was a great event. My Dad flew at least 15 of the aircraft types in the museum, including the P2V, P4Y, F7U, F8U, A3D, A1, UF, S2F; so I was busting with pride each time I saw another one on display.

The best part was sharing all this with my sons. Can't wait until VA Beach! Thanks to all who made 2012 BACFest a great success.

Each BACfest is a moment in time that is here and gone in a flash. BACfest 2012 was no different. I wish we could have captured Marty's Sierra Landing Gear Presentation for a DVD. Although I am very time limited, I would like to get with Marty, Bill Manhein and any other interested parties to develop some follow on DVDs. I wanted to do a presentation on the electrical system and electrical troubleshooting at BACfest 2012, but the shortened schedule did not allow it. I would still like to present it, at a future date.

There is no substitute for being at BACfest, IMHO. But it is a challenge for some of our international members and personal schedules. I think the DVDs are a treasured resource to have. Maybe there are plans for a future DVD link or page on the website? IDK?

I think everyone had a great time. I tried my best to lubricate the gears to achieve that goal, assisted by Marty and others of course. BACfest should be held where there are activities for everyone, not just us old guys. I'm glad Bob Prange had his sons with him. I hope they had a great time! And it looked like the ladies had a good time!

It was great to see old friends and meet new ones.

So sorry I missed the chance to meet more of you guys. My wife had several friends come into town that weekend, so the timing just didn't work out this year, but I hope to make it to a BAC event sooner rather than later.

Here's some of the video Sharmalie shot during our trip to JKA an back out again. Landing in JKA here at about 5pm on Wed, had to get out of the way of a King Air following us in, winds were 14 gust 21 at about 30degrees from the right on landing, you can see the crab angle until I corrected it, the sport handled it well, I had nothin to do with it.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBFN5Fn9bO8&feature=share&list=ULvBFN5Fn9bO8. Here's our departure Sunday 8:30am, before the winds kicked up an weather moved in, wasn't to bad, til we were in route, only 1 deviation around a cell, we did get wet and spent about 3 hours in the soup on the way home. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vm56wCYymSs&feature=share&list=ULVm56wCYymSs . Here's the soup video out of KJKA enroute to Manassas, that's the Garmin GDL39 on the glare shield, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TPycWeudzc&feature=share&list=UL7TPycWeudzc. My computerez sucks, so if these links don't work search beech sport, an look for stevekoski1 video's, there's others there from the trip, like approach an landing to Pike county cut off the top of the Kentucky hills, lots of strip mining going on there. Hope more folks can make it to Bfest next year, we're looking forward to it.

Steve
