Just sent RSVP for this event. I encourage you to give this opportunity a shot. Trumpet is a fantastic host, the location is gorgeous and the flight in and out is not difficult but still an interesting addition to your logbook.

Salida is 7,500 feet above sea level. Being based at sea level near Boston I would have to give my Sundowner special training and official permission to get that high. I admire you mountain guys. "Oxygen?... we don't need no stinkin' oxygen."

Flying that high isn't really all that tough. Greg Johnson did it with his Sundowner and didn't encounter any difficulties. Trumpet did it frequently in his Sundowner. I would think some Sports may be a bit strained to get into/out of Salida. But with the right preparation would probably have no issues. Just plan to arrive and depart light and follow the correct flight paths. The runway is long enough and the area near the airport is obstacle free. There are other things to watch for, but a little study on mountain flying would give you the knowledge to recognize potential problems and make the right decisions.

Hey Marty, I did it five years out of Eagle at 6,600. You are right, with preparation there's no issues getting into KANK, especially from the east. Passing over Leadville in the Sundowner going south was fun too.

You and Trumpet taught/prepped me well in advance, and with you flying as my wingman in loose formation coaching me along it was a fantastic flight over the front range and into Salida. Then a few days later Trumpet led me out via the southwest direction. I sure wish I was flying there again, but I'm not quite back in the air following my TopOH. As Mdunlevie says proper prep is the key, and the main key is weight, IIRC I went into KANK about 250 lbs below gross, so getting back out was not an issue. Hope y'all have a good turnout.
