I really like to plan ahead.... does anyone know when and where the 2014 BACFest is going to be held?

It is currently planned for Hillsboro, Oregon (Portland area). I don't think a date has been selected just yet. Probably in the autumn as usual.

Some of us from the East Coast have already discussed flying to Oregon on a chartered jet. Gulfstream anyone?

Though crossing the Rockies in a Sundowner and putting on 5-6000 miles at $6 per gallon is daunting... we are making the best of a commercial ride to and from.
Many of us have never been to the Pacific Northwest so we will make a trip of the area part of BACFest 2014.

Tom Corcoran, Boston... Home of the American League Champion Boston Red Sox!

Morn'n Folks,

Hah - and Mike D. is a 757/767 Captain rated in Cessna Citations... Now if only we could find someone to rent us the plane without a pilot...
:)

Regards,
Scott

I'm sure Bill could arrange a Gulfstream to fly all over the country, pick us up then bring us home, wad ya say Bill?

:) Nice talking to you yesterday. BTW I just sent a Bacfest thank you sheet with Misspellings.

Figure I should step in on this thread since I am the RD responsible for planning 2014's BAC Fest. I am in the beginning stages of getting things ready to be planned and I have a couple of volunteers so far who are willing to lend me some help. I am going to keep you all posted, hopefully in January I will have made some good headway. I have down the dates as Wednesday September 17th through Sunday the 21st, these dates are pretty much set, but if there will be any changes it will have to be very soon. As for location, we have KHIO as the hosting airport and the hotel will be nearby. I assume that it is important since we are a flying club and it must obligatory to have a hosting airport with nearby hotel. But what I am kinda feeling though is that we may not have many people flying-in, in their own planes. If this is the case, do we find a hotel in downtown Portland and if there are members that flew in, we help them get over to Portland?

Anyway, I wanted to start some dialog on this topic, the board wanted to host the event here in the PacNW since it has never been hosted up here, and I have to say it was a great decision to do so since we have some great aviation and non-aviation things to do.

Looking forward to meeting and seeing fellow BACers in 2014!

The quality of the hotel accommodations is very important. I do not mean expensive nor do I mean 5 star. Clean, comfortable and in a good location. Airport locations are not always the best. Downtown would give our spouses a chance to enjoy the area if they are dodging the maintenance seminar. Having lots to do like little side trips and local events will add to the enjoyment of all. They do not always have to be aviation related. We've had sitting-around-doing-little fests and they have not been the best. Most of the members who would come from the Northeast have never been to the Northwest and we would make it an extended vacation... and we are looking forward to it.

I agree with Tom that having available group activities is nice and beats sitting around. Do commercial airlines service KHIO? Or which commercial airport would be the best choice for those planning on commercial flights?

At VA Beach this year we had very little trouble with transportation to and from the hotel/airport and they were separated by several miles. Having a hotel within walking distance of some attractions (shopping) would be advantageous. (Posted for Tom's wife!)

I just got back from a business trip to Portland (my first time there), so here is my impression.

Portland has light rail and what looks like pretty good public transportation, including electric street cars. I used light rail from the airport with no problems. My hotel had shuttle service to downtown, so I didn't use public transportation after that. The Downtown area seems to have lots to do, though I was so busy I only got there three nights for dinner and not much else. There are a number of homeless, but they aren't bothersome.

I'm looking forward to going back, and my wife is already planning our itinerary! There are some of us looking at making this a grand flying adventure; we'll see how that goes.

Man, this is great, we just finish 1 beech fest and we are already talking about the next, you guys are surely nothing else than a bunch of party animals!

Nice find, the video definitely represents the east side of Portland well! I will look in Downtown Portland, first -- already checked with Embassy Suites, they are full that week (or maybe I need to use the secret code to get us "in")... KHIO is Hillsboro, which is on the west side, it is outside of PDX's class C and very easy to access. If we found a hotel on the west side I would make it close to the rail, actually regardless I would find something close to the light rail (the "MAX") in order to keep transportation costs down, as Bob noted, the MAX runs right from the PDX and also within a mile of KHIO. There is plenty to do, from beer "tasting" to wine tasting, museums, scary ghost tours (save your money for beer "tasting"), people watching (extremely entertaining at times), music, FLYING!!, hiking, camping, etc etc etc...

I look forward to finding a hotel for us, it is my first objective, I will try to do as Tom mentioned and find something within reasonable distance of attractions.

Bob,

You could stand to expand your map to the West. This looks like an opportunity to fill in a bunch of States. I'm looking forward to flying there myself. September in the Northwest is a great time as far as weather goes. Lots of things to do in Portland I have heard. If you like fishing, this is the place. Portland is like Seattle, highest number of boat owners per capita than any other place in the lower 48. I remember that Portland was second and I think Miami third. Don't quote me on those stats as they are from the 80's. Too bad we won't be there for the "Rain Festival". It starts some time in October and runs though most of August.
