BACFest 2014 Arrivals

A mini-BACFest at Nehalem! John and I are in Billings tonite and plan on an early start tomorrow. Do we have a quorum for a board meeting?

As of this morning (Sunday) there was only 1(One) airplane camping at Nehalem. We flew over the top on our way to Seaside for the day. It was a beautiful day on the Oregon coast. Be advised, there is heavy smoke from fires burning all across the Cascades. Visibility was diminished this evening on our return flight to BDN(Bend) from the coast. Watch out for those firefighting TFR's!!

There is a two day fire burning west of Mt. Hood near Estacada. Wind is carrying smoke to the southeast for now. We are southwest of there an hour's drive and thought the haze in the mountains here near Corvalis was humidity. That did not make sense as it has been bone dry here. The news on TV this evening had word about evacuations at several camp grounds near Estacada. It will probably be VFR for those of you flying in, but visibility will be affected. Stay tuned to notams, etc.

I was up flying in the Northern Willamette Valley with my dad today, it was VFR, but definitely hazy. Just to echo John and Mike, keep an eye on the TFRs and NOTAMS. Attached are some pictures taken around Newberg, OR at 1:30pm.IMG_3963.jpgIMG_3956.jpg

Bob and I arrived at Pearson approximately 2:00pm local yesterday 9/15. The clouds were covering the airport at Nehalem Bay State Park. We could see a bit of the end of the runway. We estimated the clouds were 100 AGL.

Damn...dead battery discovered too late to get overnight for today. Left master on (doh) but won't charge past about 5.5V. The battery was nine years old so can't complain. I could Express for $160 in shipping tomorrow but with flight time it would be spotty to even make it by dinner, so falling back to my backup ticket. If on time I'll be into PDX and have the car by 11. I may or may not make lunch but will make drive time. I'll have 3 seats available.

For those of you still flying watch the TFRs very carefully. These are not the typical 3NM+3000AGL TFRs - several are very large and a few go to 15k or 18k MSL.

5 BAC aircraft on the ramp; Hilton has 10 or more checked in. Old and new friends meeting up.
I'm running out to Pearson Field to get two more.

For a ride from Pearson Field or PDX, call the 855# and hit 3 to transfer to my cell phone. I'll come get you.

Bob

You all have a great time !!! Looks like the weather is only a minor issue for the team - - - be safe, my friends.

Jim, Cal, Kathryn, and Denis made the transition from the Nehalem Bay to Vancouver and checked in at the Hilton.

I'm going to get over there around 8-9pm tonight to drop some things off and join the unofficial welcome party at the Hilton. See you there!
