Orbiting Earth
New Smyrna Beach, Florida was the site on January 18, 2014 of a BAC fly-in co-sponsored by the Northeast Region and Southeast Region.

Member Jim Olsen got the award for making the most landings on the way by stopping to board Tom Corcoran at the Kissimmee Gateway Airport. Dan Drummond got the prize for being the newest Sundowner owner to arrive. Tom Corcoran got left seat in Dan Drummond's Sundowner for the ride back to his home base X04.

Each attendee received a signature Northeast BEECH BUM t-shirt for flying in.

A breakfast of pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and juice was served.

Special guest was Dave's flying companion Clarence who says he is 95 years old, has a current medical and flys twice a week in his Cessna 140. Dave verified these facts. He proudly accepted a BAC t-shirt for attending. Given his special status he was granted honorary Southeast membership.

Next Northeast Region event announced is the ICE RUNWAY FLY-IN February 8 in New Hampshire.

Sounds and looks like a great time. looks like you guys are dressed for the Ice runway Fly-in. We had snow in Northern Va today.

And I'm not happy that I missed this one. Grounded with car issues this morning. My fund for some improvements to the Sundowner just went to the car A&P (almost 2 AMUs).

Sorry to miss you guys.

sorry I missed the event--would have rather been there than in Maine.

p.s.--shirts look great on you guys.

FAST FRED
At great expense and effort, Tom went all out to hang with Southeast members. We did miss you, and thought, "well it is only 40 degrees colder where Fred is working today".

Dave

it was more than 40 deg lower-but got back to Atl late sat night and was able to get up and fly sunday for alittle over an hour or so...windy,45deg so not too bad of fly...just nice to get off the ground for awhile.
see you all soon---hoping to take motorhome and bike to daytona for last 4-5 days of bike wk.

For me to pick up Tom, it was 5 legs and 5 1/3 landings. Coming back to Kissimmee with 14G22 crosswind and 1 notch of flap I managed to get the upwind main down nice and smooth, but a gust put us airborne and forced a go around. Red faced I managed a smoother no flap landing the second time. Oh well, Tom already gave me the shirt so he could not take it back or kick me out.

Jim Olsen brings up a good subject, though I think he is looking at it the wrong way.
He made a decision to do a go-around on our landing back in Kissimmee. He made the correct decision under the appropriate circumstances.
A 22kt gust is attention getting and will blow you to the side of the runway in an instant.
Jim's approach was right on the money and when the wind suddenly arrived he took correct action.

We all think we should be embarrassed when instead we should be patted on the back for doing the right thing.
Let's not beat ourselves up. Jim's was no mistake. He was handling a situation and did it perfectly.
Hey, I got to ride a little longer.

In another forum I listed many of my mistakes like landing at the wrong airport, putting a plane into the ocean, mismanaging fuel to exhaustion, etc.
Though I've been doing this for 24 years I learn something new on every flight.
On the flight with Jim Olsen it was fun to snake our way through the Orlando Class B.
Anyway, he would get the violation notices, not me.
