Arlington Fly In, KAWO, July 9-11, 2015

Hi all, we have an opportunity to set up our own BAC table/booth. Are there any volunteers to help staff the table during the day? My kids and myself will be always around but I wanted to share the time. Please let me know.

Thanks, James

Looks like I'll arrive Friday PM. It's something called work getting in the way. Plus, my little Auburn is notam'd closed due to runway striping project. Its planned to be open at 6PM. I'll get there when I can.

Anyone else planning on going? I haven't heard from anyone planning to attend.

Thanks, James

I might be able to go Saturday, but I'll be driving in as the plane is in the shop for maintenance. FYI, the NOTAM has been canceled, as the airport project manager realized that Saturday would be a high-traffic day due to the fly in.

James, as it turns out I have to travel for work, not going to be able to make it again this year.

No problem John. We'll give it go anyway. I have two excited 10-yr old boys excited to go. They like the evening theater.

This was my first time out to the Arlington fly in. I chatted with someone who was selling a A23-19 for a friend. He said that the turnout was much larger in years past, but due to a falling out with the EAA and higher prices many people chose to stay home. Good news was that for the size of the show, the Mice were well represented with quite a few Sundowners. I asked about familiarity with the club and most didn't know it existed. Are there business cards for us to hand out at fly-ins? Hopefully we can get a few more members in the future :-) .

My Sundowner (w/ purple cover) was parked next to that Musketeer for sale. I would say the event is near death and it's the third largest air show in the country, outside of Oshkosh and SunNFun.

Arlington was my home base when I owned my first airplane. The event was really a grass roots gathering of ultralight and home builders that was hosted by Jim Smith (now his wife, as Jim has passed). I don't know the ins and outs of the fallout with the EAA, but I'm not a fan of them either. Often thought of starting another organization to compete with them, but I digress. Just before the EAA got involved the event was big enough to compete with all the other airshows (never had one performer up until the EAA was involved). It did get bigger after the EAA came in, but it also got very commercialized. Used to be free for anyone who flew in (or taxied across the field). I didn't mind paying for being there as there were some wonderful airplanes on display. As I got involved with BAC and met Thom Smith (NW Regional Director), I attended a couple times with Thom and represented BAC there a couple years, I saw it started to go down hill then. There were still lots going on and lots of airplanes, but attendance from vendors started to wane. What a shame, it was a fun place to go. There were others that have gone the same way. Merced Antique Fly-in comes to mind. However, Wings over Wattsonville is doing pretty good. Admission is free there, maybe that is why. But even that is just a one day event now. Merced and Wattsonville were a week apart and I used to fly down from Arlington and attend both. It would be good to have an Oshkosh or Sun-n-Fun out West someplace or even something like Arlington used to be.

Word on the ramp is air show insurance cost is eating up most cost. Maybe it (air show) should go back to a basic flyin. The performers were good but it's not the reason I go, I go to meet other pilots and their airplanes.

James, if your nice to that young man in the left seat, he might let you have a little right seat time.
