Idea for a large fly-in

For the me i like KJEF in Missouri for a west area has a nice restaurant right on the field i go to once in awhile. I think the preferred location if your flying in would be M34 Kentucky dam state park is pretty much right at the epicenter of the whole event. With clear weather would be the place to be.
 
Yeah, and you can camp at Kentucky Dam, if it's not too crowded because of the eclipse!

I floated the idea of a Casper fly in around my airport and got zilch interest. It is only a 2 hour flight (we have to go around the 14k mountains so not direct) in my plane but all the hotels rooms in Casper were apparently booked in 2015 by those who saw this eclipse coming. Poitras you must be staying with family, have connections or knew to book a room years ago. Anyone going to be in Casper let me know and we can join up!

We couldn't get a room in Casper, but a friend found some in Thermopolis. A bunch of us are staying there and my brother is driving his family down from CA in an RV. I found a room in Casper the previous Friday, to I'll be able to wander about and see the old haunts before sliding over to the hot springs.

Looking like there will be several of us in Casper WY for the eclipse. We will be arriving by ground on Sunday. Anyone know the town/area to be able to shout out a place we can meet up?

My scheduled is now filled with other activities - - - looks like grandkids trump an eclipse! So, no trumpet and no Haflinger this time around. Take pictures and share you adventure with the rest of the team. Have a safe trip and a great time.:)
 
I was thinking of flying to view it as well. I am looking at KSTJ (St. Joseph, MO). The are making an event of it at the airport. They have speakers and solar telescopes coming in. I also have been looking at KHVC (Hopkinsville, KY), KMDH (Carbondale, IL), or KPAH (Paduccah, KY).

One thought, I was in Perryville, MO (KCPD) on Saturday. They are hosting an event as well. I spoke with one of the organizers. They are requiring reservations to land. They are only allowing 150 planes on the field. It might be prudent to check with different destinations and see if this will be a common practice.
 
Thanks for the info from perryville airport. I have been leaning toward ky lake dam. But it is pretty small also.
 
Because this event will occur on a weekday (Monday), I may not be able to take an entire day off work. Besides, it sounds like any airfield in the path will be fully loaded anyway. So here's what I'm considering - I'm thinking about heading to the totality band near St Jo MO, then flying along in the totality band for a while, avoiding direct overflight of any of the smaller fields between there and Jefferson City.

Someone let me know if this sounds like a practical, unique, and fun way to experience the eclipse, or an easy way to be a PITA to those on the ground trying to experience it.

I may not be able to make this one. The next total eclipse will be April 8th, 2024 in Mexico, Central U.S. and East Canada. If it passes close to STL I might make that one.
