Pop-Up Fly-In Lancaster PA KLNS 27OCT12

I actually made a real effort to get to Lancaster.
N5162M departed 1B9 which is half way between Boston and Providence and got comfy to fly the 253 miles.
I got as far as Pawtucket, Rhode Island and got on top of an undercast. That was only six miles of flying.
About midConnecticut I called Flight Watch and they indicated that the clouds were solid all along the route.
Yes, I could have done an IFR approach but I would see NOTHING under me for 500 miles round trip.
As Martha's Vineyard was clear I went there for breakfast and sunshine and got to see a few friends.
This made the normal 54 mile flight to KMVY a 90 minute excursion.
But, I went to 6500' initially which is way higher than my sealevel flying usually requires.
I really ought to do that more often as the view is spectacular and I think I use less fuel at that altitude.
Next time... ladies and gentlemen... and Scott.

I waited for a while and only one plane landed in that whole time, apparently practicing ILS approaches. Hopefully we can do this some other time.

I also ended up giving it a go. I made it up to the susquahana about 15 miles away and hit a wall of haze scud and clouds. I tuned into tower and it sounded like most everything going in and out was IFR so I boogied home.

Maybe next time.

I always second guess myself when I abort - but - it didn't clear much by me... It sounded like we would have had some good attendance... Nice to see you up in the air Tom... We'll have to throw this one on the calendar again...

Regards,
Scott

Lets set this up for another time. Looked like we would have had a great turn out. Hopefully everybody weathers this storm okay.

Tom,

"Sandy" is not my fault, and I hope you all survive her evils. But let me tell you what she did to me to earn my wrath. I was supposed to fly down to Key West solo on Saturday (on someone else's nickle for fuel and the plane), stay overnight free of charge for Fantasy Fest, and then fly back three guests who just happen to be exotic dancers (obviously, that played no part in my agreeing to fly down). The person who would have been footing the bill just happens to own a "dance" club that has brass poles in it and his overflow guests needed a ride back, something about having extra guests in case one breaks or something. Instead, I got to watch from the ground as the wind was blowing 30 knots all weekend. Dang :(

I'm curious. What was going to get broken. The poles or the exotic dancers? Sounds like a terrible place to live, what with the beeches (er, beaches), islands, and exotic dancers too. One wonders how you make any time to fly.

Jim Olsen,

That is the saddest airplane story I have ever read.
Please accept my most heartfelt condolences.

Jim, It sounds like you had the makings of a fly-in that might be very well attended. Maybe you will need help the next time and with some advanced planning your friends in the BAC would lend a hand. LOL!
