Doug Muse cost me money

Now that I have members attention, I want to share a lesson I learned from Doug at BAC 08. I was waiting for the computer at the hotel to be open so I could check weather and file a flight plan. The gentleman using the only computer had been using it for an hour and it didn't appear that he would leave anytime soon. I happened to be sitting next to Doug at the Busch seminar and I noticed Doug was using his cell phone to track a flight. At a break I asked him about his service and he demonstrated how to get weather via duats/duat and how to file a flight plan. I have a verizon phone too and Doug lead me to the page that contained the Garmin hook up. The additional charge is 10 bucks a month. I can now get a legal weather briefing anywhere and file a flight plan. I can view weather nation wide on radar or sat. For those unaware of this feature, it is great. Doug can, and hopfully will, expand on this topic.

Bob, I don't know if this is the same link, but I use http://www.fltplan.com/ to get legal briefings, file flight plans, look at radar, check notams, fuel prices, etc. When I log on from my cellphone/PDA it takes me striaght to a mobile version of the website. It is free and will keep your old routes, fuel burns etc on file for instant acccess. I don't know how or why this is free.
Like you described, it is great to be able to do all this while sitting on the ramp at a closed FBO or stuck in traffic on the way to the airport. Now if you use it to file IFR flight plans it will even show the actual clearance you will get once the ATC computer decides where it wants you to go. Amazing what is available from a little smartphone these days.

What Bob is referring to is the Garmin Pilot My-Cast (http://www.digitalcyclone.com/products/pilot-my-cast/). It is a great service for those of us that have cheap old cell phones. Now, for those that have these fancy phones like the iPhone, Blackberry, or Windows Mobile device then you can use any number of services. One that is very nice is the Mobile DUAT at https://www.duat.com/mobile/. You can also use any number of other web sites, but the ones tailored to the mobile browser give you the best speed.

Bob, can you send me the commission check for that sale. I need all the money I can get a hold of to get my plane out of ransom at LUX with Mike. :)

Perhaps I should send the check directly to Mike and save you the cost of the stamp.
Mike would agree with that! Mechanic's liens are such a hassle!!!

If Doug will write an article for BACTALK, BAC members will finally know the true cost of building a plane around a data plate.

Yeah.. Bob.. I wonder if the FAA will let me apply for a new number. N18859R2 (for revision 2) :)

I can definitely write an article on the amazing crew at KLUX and all they do with all that knowledge. But, then those around the world would get jealous I am within a two hour flight to them.

I am sure the weeks before and after BAC Fest 2009 will be busy at LUX with all those flying from far far away places to get the once-over from Mike, Monty, and Chad.
