BACFest 2015 Recap post your story here

Fantastic job by Denis, Kathryn, Jim, Valerie, Matt, Sandra and Tommy, plus the officers and board members who approved the club funds to support BACFest 2015. Everyone received well beyond the $85 registration fee we paid!

After enduring a 20 minute hold for release at the end of the runway for two incoming IFR jets, Ann and I finally launched. At 5,000' we were mostly between layers but the winds kept our ground speed in the mid to upper 90s most of the way. After stopping for a late lunch, we arrived home around 5:30pm.

Nelson, you wonder why the ceilings began to rise around noon? Steve Cote was on the commercial flight that left town around 11:30am!

For all those that stayed at Hilton Garden Inn or had to change hotels on Saturday, be sure to book your Branson room early. :)

Brad

Who would have guessed we would have 82 at BACFest 15? Branson could be just as successful. Let's reserve a larger block of rooms and all book them early.

closed my flight plan on arrival in Salida - - 4:00 pm Colorado mountains time (as in mountains .... dude)

Long wait at Colby, Kansas until 2:00 pm, then 3200 agl showed up, south jog to Lamar to miss low clouds, then turned west with sky clear about 70 miles east of Pueblo. Flight following and 10,500 right over the Pueblo airport, climbed to 11,800 and flew into Salida with lots of altitude cushion and comfort. Rain washed the airplane (and my jeans) upon arrival as soon as I opened the door. Got cold, very cold. Then sunshine came back out and I had to get down to the T shirt to unload. Wow.

Colby, Kansas bridge club showed up about 11:00 am and set up tables at the airport. Fed me lunch with their buffet. About 25 (older) peeps. Played trumpet and sang HELLO DOLLY .... hopefully they don't hear too well .....

All good in Colorado - - Chevy started right up - - - cabin and shuttle ready for visitors. Come one .... come all. I should be here (KANK) until Friday morning. Heading up to the cabin in about 30 minutes. 719-530-0603

My first Bacfest was better than i expected. Got to put a lot of faces to names talked to Wdnd in the elevator before i knew it was him. Leaving was a challenge i did a slow taxi out to 36 for departure. Engine would not go above 2000 RPM. Not only would it not go above 2000 at wide open throttle it would quit....Grrr what a situation, mag check at 1300 or 1400 was good. Let Trumpet go by me. Still not sure what was wrong. There was a cessna and a jet behind him. Called tower and told them i wanted to taxi back to the fbo......they told me to use 36 to get to around the Jet, pulled carb heat out to see if it ran better and bam it went right up to 2500 RPM while rolling down the runway.....Duh 50 some degrees, dew point within 1 degree of ambient. I have worked over my carb heat box so it does not leak anymore, i had froze up my darn carb.......never froze a carb during taxi before. After double checking plugs and wires, taxied back out with carb heat on till take off, it purred all the way home.

Need flight close for Werbin, Singleton, Dunlevie, Nelson, others.

I should have followed Trumpet and gone an extra 40 miles over Leadville, going north to the Wyoming border was not my best plan. Got to Norfolk and had a bunch of nothing ahead at afternoon, so set down. Today hit clouds and fog driving down to 1300 over Ogallala so put down. The FBO seems to think the wireless needs more protection than Fort Knox so couldn't access weather. Cleared up at 5:30 but no time to get anywhere really from here by then. Wx "should be" clear for a 2 hour hop home in the morning.

On the plus side, I'm having an extended date with Anne, we've seen interesting things getting lost in airport crew cars yesterday and today.

Hoping to close my flight plan tomorrow...

I am still not home. I should be tomorrow, but would not bet on it at this point. It has nothing to do with N2161W's performance, nor the weather. More to follow when I get home.

Sharmalie and I took off early Monday morning, stayed the extra day because of the weather and head winds back to the east for Manassas Va. Glad we did, we are IFR but I just refuse to have head winds when flying east bound, as Sharmalie would say, "that's just not cricket". Stayed and enjoyed the Titanic exhibit and wondered around the town, beautiful quite time with the love of my life. Took off into 800 OVC got on top at 4500, had an undercast all the way to Huntington IND our first stop, still had to do instrument approach, then onto Manassas with only head wind ranging from 5 to 10 kts, this is NOT right. Oh well, had 20 to 40 kt tail winds all the way to DBQ, west bound, I guess it was time to pay the piper, and oh, almost forgot about having to declare and emergency in IMC on the way out, what a great trip.

Thanks to Denis and the whole gang for your hard work and time to work all of this out.

Steve and Sharmalie

JP and I had a good flight despite the headwinds. We had some fun enroute talking to Alan behind us on same route to lunch stop. With the lower headwinds up higher and the nasty look of the boiling clouds over the West Virginia mountains we flew our second leg at 11,000 feet in the sunshine and smooth air. ILS into Richmond VA with 36 knot crosswind at 3,000 feet was interesting. Nice to be able to share the trip with John.
Here is a cruise altitude photo.
What do you need Rap? Flight close?

Hi Donald, the gang at BAC fest is tired of hearing about the emergency but I believe Paul may want to make it a safety briefing topic here in the future, so I'll hold off for now talking more about details til then. I'm most proud of Sharmalie, how she handled it really well, she was shaking, but remained calm and quiet, she said that was possible because I was, all I'll say now is we were in hard IMC when stuff went wrong.

Steve

Here's a video link to utube for our approach into Huntington In, undercast the whole route from DBQ until the weather just starting to clear as we arrive, this is the kind of instrument approaches that are fun, puppy clouds and plenty of room underneath, enjoy.

Marty and Greg called me at the cabin last night. They just made it into Topeka, Kansas after sunset (yep .... there is a story there) and were calling from the bar. Glad to hear they are settled in for a RON. If they arrive at KANK, expect some photos from the mountains in Salida, CO.

BAC fest special for all members: After meeting the BAC family, I have decided to supply those hubcaps to any member at no cost. Just let me know and I will send you one fresh out of the mold to try on your plane. Simple. My treat. You will need a total of four if you decide to do the right side of the nose wheel.

Photo - - for those of you that may have missed the co-pilot side of my nose wheel at DBQ. Kinda cute .... actually(!)

Pax - - just PM me with your mailing address and I will send one your way.

All - - ditto - - PM me with an address. And then wait a while. :( I am busy with other items until November, and typically can produce one or two a week (depending on the work underway with my Cozy Mk4 - which determines when I mix that next batch of epoxy).

You are the man !!! Pleasure meeting you .I enjoyed the Trumphet playing ,do you have the band together for Branson? .

All:

BAC will be sending a plaque to the Jet Center at DBQ in recognition of their outstanding service during BF15. (It will be some good advertising for BAC, too!!) In the mean time, if you will post positive comments on Airnav for the Jet Center, that ill help too.

thanks in advance

Thanks for a great BACFest! JP and I took off early this morning, easily climbed out through the smooth clouds and cruised to Ohio where we met my brother and (eventually) Alan White for lunch. Our second leg included lots of headwinds, 11,000 feet over West Virginia mountains and an interesting ILS into Richmond VA. Given the storms still tearing up Virginia Beach this is close enough for me!

Paul even had ATC harass my about my speed! Next time I'm telling them to put him in a holding pattern until I can catch up!
