BAC Picnic at Oshkosh Airventure - Oshkosh, WI (KOSH) - Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Looks like a standing room only crowd! I mean it - we don't have that many seats, but we will do our best to accommodate everyone. I'll try to scrounge some more seating. This is the biggest crowd we have had since Larry Last hosted at his house! Let's hope for great weather. If you have a folding chair you can bring, that would help.

One week from today we'll arrive EAA after our 1400nm journey. It's always a challenge and thrill after our arrival. I'm wishing I was enroute now. I'd be on-top with a 14 kt tailwind.

14 knots? I went to STL once and made the left oblique at KTUL direct to KCPS and saw 88 kts on the tail. If you're gonna wish, wish BIG!

For those who fly to Oshkosh, you already know to bring suitable tiedown. But consider another small thing. The year I went I brought 3 small plywood pieces, about the size of shoebox covers. I put those under my wheels after I arrived and parked on the grass. That way the wheels did not settle into the grass while I was parked. For departure, I just pulled with the tow bar forward enough to come of the plywood and actually gave them away to a guy who had just pulled in next to me. The theory of course is otherwise the airplane will be hard to pull out of the depression you will make, or worse, you will have to use lots of power to break out of the depressions. Ugh. Perhaps you will see this in action. Never pretty. Looking forward to seeing all members and guests, thx to Bob and team for setting it up. Yes, the Last house events were epic. Remember seeing and hearing the A-380 arrive? And the corn on the cob and meals were awesome. See you all soon. And if not this year, the EAA website has the webcams and ATC audio active already and it is fun to check them out.

There are a number of anchors that can be used for turf. Some of them screw in. Some drive in with a hammer. The first year I went I bought tie downs and anchors from the EAA at the North 40 parking and have used them ever since. They don't allow any planes to be parked without tie downs. They will even install them for you. There are a number of vendors at the show who all say their anchors and tie downs are the best. But you won't have a chance to shop since they want them tied down right after they park.

For those attending Oshkosh, for the benefit of those of us that can't get there, Seattle Avionics just issued an email message saying something about a new "affordable" (how much slush is there in that word) ADS-B In and Out solution, but they say it is portable (against all rules I have heard of to date). If you go by Booth C-3089 and can take a look I'd sure appreciate some word on it, as well as all the fun you are having there. Thanks.

Hi Bob --

I'll be in OSH Sat-Tues and returning Fri-Sun.
We'll miss the Wednesday picnic.

We're camping in the North 40.
BAC members look for a White/Red Sundowner with a red domed shade structure next to it.
Stop by, say hello, and we'll pour you a cold drink.

Great pictures . Last time I saw that crew ,they had taken over our cruise ship on the Columbia River. Hope everyone enjoys Oshkosh !!!

I heard the mo gas STC was tried and the mice (sundowner?) failed because of a vapor lock issue at altitude due to our somewhat unique fuel system. Hope I am wrong!
no, you are correct. We would most likely need a pump at the tank to avoid any vapor lock issues.

Scott Pederson said they put mogas in a mouse (yr and mod not identified), it taxied 100 ft and quit. Testing ceased.

One more thing about tie downs. Here is a quote from Airventure rules: All aircraft must be tied down. “Dog leash” tiedowns are prohibited.

Harvey,

The pop-up camper is there but won't be set up until tomorrow afternoon. I should get on-site about 1:30 to set it up. I'm working at helicopter operations Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, so it gets a bit hectic.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. Should be a great time. We have plenty of room. Bob's friend has a campsite across the lane if we need to use it. Reminder if you have chairs bring them or a blanket. This year the campsite is on the South side of the ditch that runs through the woods. My phone number if you need directions (317)626-2583. A few pictures of the area.

Looking Northeast along the lane. Bob's camper is a Camplite. Look for the BAC flag.
