BAC Fest 2007

Thanks for organizing such a great BACFest. This was my first and I really enjoyed myself. It was good to meet so many people that up to now were just friendly user names.
A bunch of us took a side trip to First Flight Field and The Wright Brother's museum today. Somehow we actually found a 40 kt. tailwind for the trip up. The day was fun and it was something to watch the expressions on the faces of some that had never before been to this hallowed spot. Now.... If I could learn math then the formation flight could have been a little closer, live and learn, right?

I just arrived home. My girlfriend picked me up from my commercial flight, for dinner and a movie. There was so much bad weather here, in Texas, earlier in the week. I know many from the South Central did not make it. I was really glad that I was able to go. It was more and better than I hoped it would be. Expensive but worth every penny.

I jumped on to the Power Flow exhaust wagon a few months earlier than planed and that is all good. I am still shoving diamonds up a goats a**, I guess. I will make every effort to make BAC FEST 2008.

It was great to meet everyone. I was very impressed with you all. What a great group of awesome, talented people!!! Everyone brings so much knowledge and experience to the table. It was super educational. It is a shame it happens so rarely. I'm glad I was there!

My thanks to the people who put so much work into making it a success!

How did you like the ride thru those 90 KT winds at Salt Lake? I had to go thru that snow to refuel after a 7 hour leg in the Malibu.

i was not able to attend due to my Cararact Surgery Wed but it sounds like you all had a good time. I saw the mention about Powerflow and that Robin attended. Did they announce and news about the Powerflow for the O-360's or whell pants?

Hope to be back in the Air for the early Christmas at 34A in Dec.

Had a great time....Kind of disappointed that I was not able to fly in Friday as planned, however, the company and the experiance there more than made up for it.

As I said, had a great time, and meet some great folks there. Thank you to all who not only showed up, but to those Wizards' behind the scene's who put it all together.

Must add in one point here.....My wife was extremely pleased to have been able to meet everyone's wives who were there. Made the weekend for her as she was afraid that she wasn't going to enjoy it very much. However, she did enjoy it, thought everyone was great and enjoyed herself. Thanks to all those nice wives for their hosipitality.

Thanks again, and am hopefully going to try and make it next year....

Had a great time and not too bad of flight home. Winds were not as strong as I thought but I stayed lower to avoid the huge push at higher altitudes. Already looking forward to next year. :)

The Buttram Family is home safe and sound. Fought 35 kt headwinds all the way from Lexington, KY to Wichita. With 75kt ground speeds We were able to take a good look at the countryside :D

Dusty, Brandy and I had a great time.

Gotta start saving for next year now.

Bill Manhein, Minnie and I made it back to 1L0. Clear all the way to just north of Biloxie then had an undercast. Had to go through about a 1500 foot cloud deck to get back into 1L0. Broke out about 2500. Nice to have the IFR ticket now. Encourage others to get theirs too.

GREAT BAC FEST. Looking forward to next year in Santa Maria.

It was 12 hours of wallclock time for us and about 11 hours of flying. We stayed low initially to avoid the winds but had to cross those hills. Original fligh plan was Bloomington, IN for the 1st fuel stop, that got adjusted to Florence, KY and ultimately Corbin, KY (original home of Colonel Sanders and KFC). We did okay at 2500 but groundspeeds dropped into the 60s crossing the hills.

From there to Kankakee, IL (try to say that quickly on CTAF 3 times) landing at sunset, a last weather check, and a 3.5 hour night run into KMIC.

We considered staying an extra day to relax on the beach but the ride home was hanging over our head and now it looks like it would have been some marginal night IMC to finish the trip in today.

25 hours of hand flying was an experience - and I think the wife is ready to fork out for Otto once SuperMouse is painted.

Candy had her first actual IMC - we both had our longest single legs (time and distance) and longest days.

BACFest was great - it was great to see old and new faces. Thanks to all the folks who put a lot of their own effort into making it a great event. It was fun to see and hear from Robin including sitting with him for dinner. I plan to be one of the first BACers to send in a wheel pants deposit this week.

We will be there in Santa Maria in 2008, probably will book the hotel in the next few days. Travel plans are TBD as our life plans -we may or may not be already out there by this time next year, it should be fun.

Becky and I made it into Magnolia at 4:15pm after stopping for a couple of "rest" stops and fuel. We also took about an hour for lunch at our second stop in Jasper, AL ($3.60/gal).

We enjoyed getting to see everyone again and to meet new folks this year. We especially enjoyed getting to fly with Paul Werbin, Dean Sikes and Dan Jonas up to First Flight yesterday. It was a "pilgrimage" of sorts and was very special to see where "it all began".

Thanks again to Digger and Brad for putting all of this together not to mention the other folks who took part in planning or presenting one of the sessions.

We plan on seeing you next year at Santa Maria or in between at another Bac FLYIN.

Jennifer and I made it home about 4PM Central time today. We stopped at Dan Kirby's airport (Portsmouth Ohio) for lunch and again in South Bend Indiana for a 'rest stop' before crossing Lake Michigan. Got the snot kicked out of us descending through 4500 feet at South Bend. Had some 50 knot plus winds at 6500 feet, but a smooth ride. Saw my first Sundowner 155 knot ground speed in level flight, but then we got headwinds that made up for it.

Jennifer had a great time, as did I, and enjoyed meeting all the great folks there. Planning on BAC Fest 2008 as well.

Many thanks to Brad and Digger for a job well done!!!

Steve and Sharmalie have also made it home.
At the sports blistering 100kt cruise all the way from KCRE. And reading some of the notes form you sierra drivers maybe now you'll do as I recomended and agree to changing the PT race from miles to hours!
 At 5000 we had no bumps smooth all the way and got back into the ADIZ around 1pm.

We too thank all for a great time and good laughs. Look forward to next year.

Steve

Getting Home

We still have a bit farther to go, but we made it to Sherman, Texas today. Not bad considering we stopped at 34A for about 4 hours.

We have some things to do here tomorrow and then will head for Oregon to pick up the dog and then back down to Napa. Except for pretty strong winds, the rest of the trip looks pretty clear.

We had a great time with the event and the company. Well worth a trip across the country and back.

Dan Jonas

Dan, the winds are very strong right now. It might be worth giving it another day before leaving. It took Jim and I 11 hours in the Malibu to get home from KRBD this yesterday/this am. The winds over the mountains were making harsh turbulance. We had to go to FL200 to get a semi decent ride-Bob

How very special::::we both had a great time at BAC FEST - Myrtle Beach
and wish to express to each and all our appreciation for the kindness and
joy you shared with us. Sarah Jane sends her best to you - the ladies.
To you the FOUNDERS - a dream come true, thanks to you. Hard to
imagine - you have come this far in just 40 months. GREAT JOB::
Mike, Thursday was a good day - I learned more about N7623R then
than I had in 23 years - I am sure I can now make her more comfortable
in her later years.

With all the good stuff going on I failed to share with you a book I had
in my backpack. "INTO THE BLUE" by Susan Edsall about Wayne her
father who had by-pass and as a result a stroke. She and her sister
worked with Wayne on his recovery - he now has his pilots license back.
A very good read - Wayne is my friend from Bozeman, Montana.
Amazon.Com - You will be glad you did.

I wish you well.

Reading some of these posts I kinda feel like a slacker!
Easy gentle flight home. Like the trip down it was 5.5 hours, one pit stop in SBY. This time the skies were as forecast: clear, smooth. But the predicted winds just weren't there, head or tail.
Thanks to Brad and Digger for their yeoman work putting this confab together. I had a wonderful time. BAC Fest is, to me, my "Family Reunion". It will keep me going for another year in the "Salt mine".

PS: I really think there is something to my joking theory that all the VORs go screwy when approaching ORF. Two OBS's were 40' off each other and neither was closer to the beacon than 20'. This is the third time this has happened. Good thing for GPS.

Talk about slackers, how about 55min. It was a great trip and was a thrill to meet so many wonderful people. left sun. 10:00 am got home 1055 am. Thanks for a great time.

Flight Home

Ok, I'll grant you that my flight Saturday was only 1.2 hrs and the weather was good, BUT how many of you had an FAA Examiner looking over your shoulder on your trip home???

(still doing the "Pilot Dance)....
