Arlington Flyin & BAC Type Club tent

Hello all,

I've been busy, busy and havn't checked the site for a while. I'm a maybe on the wed. night dinner. I will try, but we'll see. My weather contingency is usually to wait it out an continue. If I have to, I'll drive. If weather is good and I can get away from work, I'll try to fly up wed. for the dinner. Otherwise, I'll fly/drive up Thurs. morning.

Barely a week away. :D I'm looking forward to it.

Ben

OK guys,

Only a few days before we get this happening! We only get 5 RSVPs for the Wed night dinner, along with 5 passes to the event itself. BAC is going to pick up the price of however many more passes we need for those that volunteered to man the tables, but we will have to hash out the Wed night dinner limitation. We still plan a dinner for ALL BACers, but have gotten no input so far as to where, what kind of eats, or driving limits we all want. I was hoping to have that BAC dinner while the Prez was there, but that may not happen. Please.... your thoughts?

But, what I'd like (need) to know (from all who plan to attend....volunteers or not) just as soon as possible (for PT points and planning reasons) is ...... when do you plan to arrive, how many in your party, and how will you be getting there?

  • Thom Smith ...........Tuesday AM......Flying....1
  • Chris Linderman ......Tuesday ...commercial....1
  • John & Judy Radysh..Tuesday.........Driving....2
  • Marty Vanover.........Tuesday..........Flying....1
  • Ben & Selena Auker ..Thursday.PM....Flying....2
  • Jack Becker.............?.....................?.........?
  • Mick Nordeen ..........?.....................?.........?
  • Mark Hoskins............?.....................?.........?
    Any others?

I have compiled, and just posted at the bottom of the news article about Arlington, a large number of live webcam shots for those of you that would like to keep an eye on the "real world" weather along the way. Kinda like sticking your head through a space portal! I have included airport webcams from San Diego to just north of Arlington.
Hope this helps

Man, everything was set to go, then I reviewed my logs. I wouldn't make it back from KAWO before my prop hub inspection would be due. Late night at the hanger getting the prop ready to pull. Early morning (5:30 am) meet my buddy and pull the prop. In the shop by 8:20 am out at noon. Now I gotta wait until my buddy gets off work to hang it. But, it looks like I'll make it. So, I will be flying in on Tuesday and it will be just me..... unless I get lucky.

Thom . My wife and I are leaving Saturday afternoon for the Okanagan , so I will not be able to respond to mail , and we will be arriving in Arlington Tuesday afternoon sometime. It will be just the 2 of us.

John

Selena and I will arrive Thurs mid-day, unless we get away early enough on wed to make it to the dinner. We hope to fly and it's just the two of us. (What's the story on dogs?) Maybe Chance will come to (the dog). We are pretty open to whatever when it comes to the BAC dinner. As long as we can catch a ride... :P

See you all soon

Ben

Unfortunately....dogs are not allowed, otherwise my boxers would be there too.

And don't forget to write down your miles traveled, this does count towards the PT point race for the trophy!!

Thanks for the response Thom. It's too bad, but things will be simpler without the pup.

I was thinking about the bad weather scenario, and I am worried that if I have to drive up on Thurs, I might not make it in time to cover my 3-5 shift at the booth. I just wanted to mention this. We can chat on tues - wed., when we know what the weather will be like and go from there. Bad weather always messes with flying schedules.

Hoping for blue skies and tailwinds.

Ben

My plan if the weather is "bad" is to go towards Portland and make a run up the I-5 corridor underneath the weather rather than my normal direct over the northern Cascades. That is almost always do-able. I have to leave on Tuesday, but you can always reach me on my cell @ 541-910-5643

I really don't want to drive!

I have been following the 10 day forcast on weather.com and now the AOPA. I'm leaving on Monday and hope to get to Salem, Or. and sneek in under the scattered showers forcasted for Tuesday. Thom, I don't know what route your taking, but there are two formidable obsticles. The Columbia Gorge has some pretty high cables accross it to make scud running the gorge rather exciting at times (don't ask how I know this). Once North of Portland you have to contend with the "Toledo Wall" a weather phenomon that makes for very low ceilings in the vicinity of Toledo. You'd know it will be risky if you fly past Longview airport and see several airplanes in the transit area. Monitor Longview Unicom for radio updates as there is usually someone that has to go look see. Everyone else is in their plane listing for the report. Don't forget to fly on the right of I-5 either direction.

Yeah, I regularly "scud run" the gorge and know all the obstacles, but the "Toledo wall" is a new one ... for me. I will check into that, and a big thank you for the heads up!

Yeah, the gorge is the normal route for me when it is overcast in the valley. I'm not sure about the cables that you mentioned, Marty. I must not have gone as low as you have through there. I think that the lowest I've done is about 2000' MSL. Could you elaborate on these obstacles? It would be good to know because I fly this route regularly. My route will be direct in fair weather, or through the gorge and up if the valley is overcast. It seems that I should find some kind of hole in the clouds between Salem and Seattle. My last trip to Portland took an extra hour because the briefer told me I would'nt find a hole, so I went through the gorge. When I got to Portland, one third of the sky was clear! I'll probably climb high enough to take a look over the mountains and make my decision at that point. I really don't want to drive.

Only a couple of days left.

See you all soon.

Ben

I really don't want to drive.

Me either.... hoping to launch about tomorrow about 1500z direct to Wenatchee (KEAT) and over, but I need to take another look in the morn. May have to make the I-5 run, but that adds an hour for me. I think Marty is already en-route.. so don't expect a response. I put my cell # in a previous post, call if you need. I really don't wanna drive! Forecast is for MVFR (due to ceilings) , which isn't so bad as long as you stay in the "valley". But a hole will be a must somewhere.

I still didn't find out any more about this "Toledo wall", so we'll just have to see.

See ya all there!!

CRAP!!!! Solid IFR, or MVFR with no holes! Forecast getting worse.

This is exactly why I need my instrument training completed! Looks like I may be driving..........................

I think you'll make it if you go through the gorge Thom. Ceilings aren't that low, 5000'. An extra hour on your flight is still a shorter trip than driving. We want all the planes we can get there. I'm not sure about the Toledo wall either. Hope it doesn't stop us.

Ben

We made it over the top to the BTG VOR, then to Centralia, dropped through the only hole for 1000 miles, scud run at 1500 - 2000 the rest of the way, in rain and low vis, but made it. 2 planes right now,had to look for internet to check in, but ...

Hope to see you all here!

Just found out last night that one of our local flyers out of Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada will be performing in the Arlington Airshow. His name is Eric Hansen and he'll be flying an F-1 Harmon Rocket with his partner Ken Fowler as a two ship. If any of you guys run into them say Hi from the Baby Beech crew in Cold Lake and give them a big BAC welcome. Enjoy the show.

Arlington, Day One Report-

The day was cool and rainy.....we're in Washington, duh?!?!?

The BAC table is in the main tent and it looks great. We had members John and Judy Radysh, Marty Vanover, Ben Auker, Regional Director Thom Smith, Robin and Jack Becker and myself gathered around the coffee maker we set up at the table.

The crowd has not shown up yet as this is the first day and the weather was no cooperating. As we get near the weekend the weather and attendance are expected to improve.

All for now from Arlington, Washington!

PS-Three planes in the corral the first day!

Had a great visit but too short.

Robin and I enjoyed getting a chance to put faces with names and sitting around talking planes. Too bad ORS was socked in for the day or N836KT would have joined the 3 planes in the corral. Anyway, now it's back to work, but we hope to see everyone at Arlington next year (maybe elsewhere too if we can get away), Jack Becker

Arlington Report - Day Two

The weather was much better today and so was the crowd. We were all WOWed by several F-18 fly-by's. Geez those babies are fast!

Another BAC member joined us, Dawn and Mark Hoskins. They're locals but they stopped by the table, spent some time with us "selling" BAC and then we all had a great dinner.

The dinner was nice with lots of good conversation and plenty of BAC knowledge moving around the table. We recognized all the great contributors to our wonderful organization.

Tomorrow should be better yet!

All for one!

Arlington Airshow - Day Three

The weather was spectacular and the crowd was growing by the hour. The BAC table was plenty busy with member Dean Imbeau stopping by to say hello and lots of other visitors.

Our tables always seem to attract attention because very similarly to VW beetles, a lot of pilots have owned or flown a baby Beech and they are excited to learn that we are keeping the brand alive.

I had to leave around 1 PM. Thom Smith, the NW Regional Director had done a FANTASTIC job of organizing, leading and providing energy for the group. Well done, Thom! I'll see you in Arlington again next year!!!

Thanks to all the table volunteers...Mark (aka Sponge Bob), Ben Auker, Mark Hoskins, Thom Smith, Marty Vanover (the flying Dutchman), Jack Becker and John Radysh.

Tomorrow will surely be an even better day, so all of you enjoy and have a great day. For those Northwest BAC'ers, make your plans for next year. It is a great show and fun time for BAC!!!

All for one!
Chris
