Wings To Wichita June 18th, Stearman Field 1K1

Ok three hours one way is the max i will go for a day trip. Will stay the night if at all possible. We bugged out of 1k1 just in time due to the storms that formed as we were leaving.

The day for this fly-in was a busy one. Everyone made it to Stearman Field by 11:30 and we had 8 people in attendance. We ate lunch in Don Olsons's hangar with pizza paid for by Wilco Aircraft Parts. After lunch we had a tour of a small airplane manufacturing facility in a hangar close to Don's. I cannot remember the make and model that is being reproduced by the gentleman who is a friend of Don's. I will post a picture below and maybe some of you will be able to recognize it. After the tour we drove to the Kansas Air Museum at McConnell Air Force Base with our admission being paid for by Kenny Oliver of Global Air Parts. We had a whirlwind tour of about an hour and a half. The museum closed early at 3 p.m. for a wedding reception being held there. This proved adequate to see most of the displays inside and out on the ramp. On the way back to the airport we stopped at a candy and nut shop Linda and I visited during BACTac two years ago. It is unlike any other that I know. Fortunately, we couldn't linger there too long as they closed at 4 p.m. Don and Penny Olson treated us to a great barbeque in their hangar. During this interval storms were approaching from the south and southwest. We moved my and David's planes into row hangars without sides to protect them from possible hail. We got a reminder of how wide our mice gear are compared to other makes. Our wheels were wider than the cement pads in the hangars. Since it had rained before this day, our wheels sunk down into the mud. Steve and Cathie took off for St. Louis to beat the weather before the barbeque. The rest of us had a nice supper with steaks supplied and marinated by Don and Penny Olson. Linda and I were the only ones who stayed for the concert which was a good one since we recognized a lot of the songs. Sunday morning chores were mainly to try and pull our two planes out of the mud and wash it off the tires and brakes before departing. It was great to see everyone who attended. There were two additional guests who were there for awhile on Saturday and both were former BAC members. One used to have a mouse and the other is trying to sell his, I think, Sundowner, so he can buy a tail dragger. Here are some pictures:

Mike & Steve next to Steve's plane. Mike's plane in the back ground has an almost identical paint job as Don's Sierra. They are serial numbers 403 and 419.

Kenny Oliver of Global Parts and Mike demonstrate how to use a new product they are selling. Since lithium batteries in lap tops, tablets and cell phones are prone to catching on fire, this is a product that the smoking or burning device can be placed in and sealed. Once sealed it will extinguish the fire and keep the smoke contained. There are other sizes of these. If you are interested, contact Kenny at Global. He said that these are mandatory in Europe.

Take a close look at the two mud trails to see where Dave Steven's plane taxied.
