Windwood Resort Fly-In Canaan Valley WV

Just for kicks, what were the winds like there, was the ride rough? I put Sharmalie thru mountain waves once and that was enough, careful to not go thru that again if we can help it. Sure missed seeing the gang again, and as always a really good reason to spend a hundred bucks for a burger.

Pretty good turnout for the first Canaan Valley fly-in at Windwoods Resort. 4 planes and 7 people enjoyed a great lunch and the beautiful fall colors. Thanks Don for posting pictures. Those in attendance were:

Ken Cook
Kevin Silvia
Don Poitras
Gary & Debbie Boyce
Brad & Ann Mitchell

Steve, winds were relatively calm. 8 knots straight down the rather rough runway. Most of us arrived at 5000 feet or above and had to let down over the runway once we crossed the final ridge. Beautiful day for flying.

It was calm to perhaps 7 knots from the north-west at the field. The surprise was on rollout, there is a pretty severe ditch filled in with loose rock. The runway goes over a road that links houses on the far side of the runway and that's pretty rough too. Stay to the right if landing to the north. I have been in mountain waves and I agree, they can be tough. We had planes coming from north, south and west and I think everyone had a similar experience. My route from the south was probably the worst weather-wise as I was just below the cloud bases in Raleigh at 5000 and then just above them as I had to climb over the Blue Ridge. Coming home, there was a solid overcast from 6 to 7 thousand that I spent some time in and then noticed the temperature was -5C. Oops. Climbed to 9000 and and it was smooth air and a beautiful (I keep saying that word) ride. The overcast held all the way back to Raleigh, but it had warmed up by then, so no concerns going through the clouds on approach.

Will attest to the rough runway. On rollout I rolled through the ditch, up and over the hump and got to experience that dreadful nosewheel shimmy. First time I've had that happen in quite awhile. Adding the shims to the nose several years ago had pretty well eliminated that. Appears everything held together though, so alls well that ends well!

Thanks to everyone that came to the Windwood fly-in. It was a great place, would go back again. It was good to meet Ken, Kevin and Don and to see Brad and Ann again.

Was a nice place to have a fly-in, and for those that did not make it, we stayed overnight at the lodge, and it was very nice. Perhaps we can have another fly in there with snow on the ground.

Sounds and looks like a great trip. I wish I could have made it. Here in Virginia Beach looks like the only place on the east coast that spent the weekend dealing with a coastal nor'easter. The mountains looked a whole lot nicer that the 40 kt rainy weekend we had here.
