Around The Moon
Come one .... come all. Yet another excuse to fire up the grill and serve all the fix-ins' for our intrepid BAC flyers.

Saturday, Nov 4th

Serving 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Just like last time, look for the Texas tent at the big blue hangar at San Geronimo Airpark on the west side of San Antonio, Texas. 8-T-8 is the airport code. I need to type the dashes to avoid the sun glasses face ..... still can't figure that one out.

Come early and visit a spell .....

If you plan to attend .... I need a head count for the food ..... dude.

Photos are from our last BBQ. Rain date will be November 11th (expect a flag ceremony if it's postponed a week)

Hi Nelson;
Really enjoyed the event last year. This year though I have to man a booth at the Lackland-Kelly AFB airshow on that day, so cannot make it. Looks like the TFR will be south of your airport at least.

In other local news, the weather for the Elm Creek fly-in tomorrow, the 28th, will be great. Here is a link to their site for those near San Antonio. http://www.elmcreekairpark.com/

Nelson,

How long of a drive would you say it is from your place to SAT? Our last flight out of SAT leaves at 4:30 on Saturday afternoons.

Jay,

28 miles, 45 minutes to SAT from the San Geronimo Airpark.

My home is about 10 blocks from SAT, so I travel this route often.

Go ahead and put me down, just me, the woman is busy that day.

I may have to bug out around 2 or 2:30 but I can vpulunteer to get down there early if you need help with anything.

You picked a good day for us - Candy is not working so plan on the two of us plus the hound if that's okay. I'll be back in the air tomorrow for first flight post maintenance - not expecting any surprises.

Well ..... including me, looks like we are up to 4 persons, one flying mouse, one parked mouse with a new engine, and .... wait for it ...... two dogs!! Go team! (my dog loves golf cart rides)

One last look at the weather and tonight I will make the go / no-go decision.

It is cooler this time of year, but along with that can come cloud covers that may ka-bosh the whole event. Look for a post tonight on the BBQ this weekend ..... or delaying until the rain date (Nov. 11th). Which gives me an excuse to post my dad's photo .....

Yes Nelson, I am watching the weather as well, please let us know! It has been raining here along the coast last 3 days!

Each person please make your own choice on weather acceptability and attendance ..... and just let me know your plans if possible during Saturday morning. Post here, PM me, or call with an update 210-834-1991.

I will fire up the grill on Saturday and have the BBQ ready to serve as planned. I have plenty of airport neighbors who will make sure none goes to waste! If it turns out to be a no-flying day, mark you calendars for the next Saturday, Nov. 11th and we'll do it again! Simple.

Overall the weather Saturday looks good, precip most places looks to end by early morning - the unknown is the ceilings and we won't have usable TAF until tomorrow evening. The Sierra is running quite nicely with #2 making full power again and is showing signs of a good, early break in - got a nice round of break in flying last Sunday with a solid 2 1/2 hours at 75%+ and time for power descents and gentle power reductions. Four quarts of mineral oil got here today - buying conservatively so I'm not left holding half a case. The 1.5H gave a consumption rate of 1 qt even. The second hour was only 1/2 qt more so oil consumption is already dropping. If we make the fly in that will be ~2 more good hard hours. I've got a pint of Camguard ready to go but the shop here advised don't add that until we're past break in and switch back to normal dispersant oil.

So we are planning to attend unless ceilings make it impractical - I'm not instrument current - something I hope to remedy before the end of the year. Luckily this is Central/South Texas so a workable ceiling is pretty easy.

I'll check back in tomorrow once the 00Z TAFs are out, by 7pm Central - that should give us a good forecast for ceilings on Saturday.

BTW - don't forget we end DST on Sunday - no impact on Saturday's forecast time conversions but it will impact anyone flying Sunday.

Dr Nelson,

Same thing goes for the Caballeros, we are planing to attend unless the weather does not improve before lunch ( it has been LIFR to MVFR last 5 days with rain at times and fog All mornings, it only improves till Afternoons).

We will let you know tomorrow early morning. Typical gulf coast weather this time of the year and I believe it extends 100-200 miles inland!

Thanks

The 18Z TAFs are out - showing BKN at 700 for Austin, San Antonio and Houston into the late morning - with mist and low vis in some areas :-(. We won't know the forecast through the day until the 00Z TAFs come out around dinner.

There's a front/trough combo with the cold side on the South side that is letting the coastal air in and keeping the clear air out to the west. That front is supposed to drop South some as a cold front later today and clear things a little but then retreat back North. Later in the day on Saturday the Low driving it is supposed to start to shift East and let in some clearer air behind it but fairly late in the day. But the Surface analysis are approaching their max age so again we'll have to wait a few hours to get a better picture for tomorrow.

I pick up Jay at SAT international tomorrow morning, so we'll have at least one customer!!

You all fly if you can, but please don't push the limits. Airport neighbors will take up the slack! We'll fold up the event about 2:00 pm.

AND - - - mark you calendars for November 11th - Saturday. We'll do it again next weekend as well !!!
