Smoketown Fly-In August 10th S37

So I didnt do too well on the flour bomb drop, as soon as I put it up to the window it had flour coming out and I dropped it way too early. But then coming back for the dead stick precision landing I think I did pretty well. A taildragger beat me but it looks to me in the video that i nailed it. Oh well fun times!

Had a great time was nice meeting you Scott, Jackie, and Dave! Hope to see you at the next BAC Flyin!

For today - it was the three Musketeers... Great fly-in folks - thanks for posting it Eric... Very cool little airport... Just landed back at KMSV - we're gonna go grab a pizza and I'll post some shots later... A bit bumpy for Jackie...

Regards,
Scott

The region has been officially "hit up" for Tshirts. Eric Grill is the chief trouble maker in this regard.
Obviously he is well aquainted with the awe inspiring BEECH BUM Tshirt system and works it well to his personal advantage.
The official region's decision as to if you guys quailfy is in the hands of the Supreme Decider.

These are the criteria:

* you are a member
* fly your airplane to the fly-in
* the fly-in is posted on the BAC calendar at least 5 days in advance
* when the regional director validates the fly-in in advance
* when Tshirts are offered in advance for the event by a benevolent Regional Director

The mystery of Smoketown is this...

Eric Grill posted the fly-in on the front web page not the calendar. The mitigating situation is that it was posted sufficiently that three members from three different states attended. PA/NJ/NY
Eric and Scott already have beautiful, coveted and stylish BEECH BUM Tshirts but no limitation was ever posted.
David Falandys flew in from Bayonne, New Jersey and innocently expected a fashionable BEECH BUM Tshirt.
The Smoketown FBO reportedly presented Tshirts to the PIC in each aircraft. Not valuable and exclusive BEECH BUM Tshirts.

I have sent the following message to Eric Grill: If you qualify send me the names and sizes and addresses. 4 weeks from now I will be back in the US where I can retrieve the splendid and alluring BEECH BUM Tshirts which are stored in a climate control high security vault to keep MidAtlantic bandits from pilfering our supply.

An official decision will be forthcoming. Dave obviously earned a vivacious BEECH BUM Tshirt. Those other two coniving scoundrels may have gotten through a regulatory loophole. They will have to suffer a while until a ruling comes down from On High.

Hi Tom,

OMG - hail Grand Poobah - man - you're on a roll today - you haven't been nipp'n at the old spirits already have you ? You had both Jackie and I rolling this morning - great post - sir...

While I can't speak for that sneaky Eric guy (he does live suspiciously close to the Mid Atlantic region - hmm) - Dave needs special dispensation - he's a 20 plus year Sierra driver - BAC Member - and - Smoketown was his very first event - not to mention his plane is immaculate with a beautiful paint job - actually recently painted at Smoketown...

I think we intimidated the Southern boys - though - as none of them dared fly North of the border into Yankee territory... Air Czar's - really ???
:)

Yes - it's true - I already have one of the coveted shirts - so I really don't think it's fair to claim another - however - if deemed worthy Jackie did express interest - I could use one slightly smaller - LOL... She's a tough camper and sacrificed her stomach to the bumps on the way home... She was pretty miserable...

We arrived at Smoketown just after 09:00 - which had the pattern looking like a hornets nest... I pulled in behind a low wing Fairchild with an open cockpit and was pretty surprised when I couldn't fly slow enough to maintain separation... Had to swing pretty wide to compensate... Relatively small 2400x50 foot runway with an uphill landing for 28... Very cool little airport with what appears to be a thriving aviation community...

The highlight of the event - was when the first flour bomber - two real nice "kids" (I'm getting old but they had to be in their teens or real early 20's) flying a Grumman got a little too excited on the bomb run... They had the slider canopy open they had lined up with the runway... As they approached the target - the release seemed spot on - but - wait - there was more than one object falling from the plane - now here I had a flashback to the old WKRP episode with Mr. Carlson turkey bombing the supermarket - but no - thankfully - it wasn't a turkey... I guess in the excitement of the moment - the bombardier actually had his headset cord wrapped around his hand - when yelling "bombs away" he actually threw his headset out of the plane with the flour bomb... Since their aim was so good - of course they smashed on the runway instead of hitting the softer grass which may have saved them... (Sigh) Just think of the stories to be told for years to come ???

Anyway - we do have some pictures to post - but - Jackie crashed the moment we walked in and slept for 12 hours... The combination of the big day and the air sickness beat her up... I'll try to upload them today...

Regards,
Scott

You forgot to mention the kid who threw out his headset actually won the event! I wish someone caught a shot of him doing it that is a great story.
