Rellihan Transportation Fund

Around The Moon
I am posting this today to ask for your support in a special project for a special BAC member. Many of you know Mike Rellihan personally, quite a few have met him and hundreds of us have benefited from his knowledge, advice and wisdom.

As most of you know, Mike has had some challenging health problems for a while. Recently it was determined that Mike’s cancer was operable and he is in Houston as I write this, getting the treatment he needs. The prognosis seems positive and Mike is confident he will benefit greatly from the surgery as opposed to other forms of treatment.

But, the reason for this posting is to solicit donations to help BAC cover the transportation costs associated with getting Paula and Mike (and their car) home from Houston after the surgery. BAC member Ed Shepherd first came up with the idea and after doing a little “behind the scenes” work, we were able to get BAC member and Beechcraft Heritage Museum Division President, Harold Bost to agree to fly his beautiful Baron from his home in Georgia to Houston, pick up Paula and Mike, and fly them back to Laurens, SC. The deal with Harold is that we will pay for the avgas and any other incidentals. Doing this for Mike is a great idea. He is certainly capable of handling his expenses but this will allow him to avoid the arduous three day drive home after having just had surgery. And since commercial flying is anathema to Mike, we thought a ride in a nice Baron would be the perfect way to get him and Paula home. It is little enough to pay Mike back for all the things he as done for all of us!

I am asking for donations of all sizes, as much as you feel you can give, to be made by check. We chose not to use PayPal due to the percentage that is taken from the donation. Please make your check to Beech Aero Club and mail it to the BAC post office box. Here is the address: Beech Aero Club, P.O. Box 899, Georgetown, KY 40324.

As for the family car that Paula and Mike used to drive to Houston, we are trying to put together a relay system to get it back to Laurens. BAC member Bill Manhein is planning to do the first leg by driving if from Houston back to Louisiana. We would like some volunteers to step up that can either drive the car or fly a member from a relay point back to their home. All the details haven’t been worked out yet but let me know if you can assist in “mike-mobile” homecoming effort!

So, I hope you will help us help a friend. Mike has contributed so much to BAC it is hard to imagine the club having the success it has had without him. I know these are tough economic times but please do what you can and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

All for one!

I can chip in. I might be able to help with most or all of the drive depending on timing as it's shaping up that I'll have a short 3-day contract in Austin, TX later this month. The details of that to you Chris via Email.

Mike? Is that the guy that makes me do the "right" maintenance or not-at-all? I think it's the same guy who came to my fly-in on Prince Edward Island, Canada and slept in my spare bedroom. He didn't complian about the foldout sofa comfort but I have gotten a lot of bleep about my dial-up internet there. I've got a bunch of pictures of me and him and I don't know which of us looks slimmest from the other. He did fly my Sundowner and I took notes in the right seat. I didn't mind his constructive criticism about the plane... but did he have to land the thing better than I have ever done? No - showoff! And all the reading I have to do about maintenance thanks to him. I was so happy before he made me think before I spend my service dollars. And those HNR-223 structural screws. It was so easy to grab anything and drill the hole bigger to make it fit.

Rellihan? Ya, that's the guy. I'm going to send a few sheckles just to make him fly in a Baron. That'll fix him. He won't enjoy it one bit. He'll be listening to two engines through the entire flight. Good. That will serve him right.

And finally the SECRET. I have it on good authority he's getting a tummy-tuck while he's in the hospital. Damn, if his waist is smaller than mine after he's recouperated... I want my money back!

He will probably reject anything we send on his behalf so do it just to p-him-off.

Glad to call Mike Rellihan a friend... and he owes me a night on HIS couch in Laurens... and some of Paula's cooking.

I believe you can (once could) give someone your FF miles toward a ticket..still possible?

I'm heading off to the post now. Due to being on a fixed income and having the Sierra in annual that is over schedule and waaay over budget, I can only provide a paltry amout for my share of fuel. I probaby owe Mike about 10 times this amount.

Depending on the timing... (I'm out of country 2/15-2/22, working in Houston from March 2nd to about the 12th)...
I'm up for some flying and/or some driving... I could potentially fly to my musketeer to Louisianna, park my plane, pick up the car, drive it to Birmingham or even Laurens... Or ride with Bill to Louisianna and take over from there. I have a Southwest award ticket that I could use for getting home if someone in Laurens could get me to a nearby airport with SouthWest service (Raleigh or Birmingham).

Or if the timing doesn't work out for me to do the driving, I'll offer up the southwest award ticket if someone else needs it to get home.

Chris - let me know how best you can use me for this mouse-mission.

Mark - If you're in Austin while I'm not out traveling, give me a call.

Best,

As expected, the response to help Mike and Paula is huge. My check is in the mail and many others have done the same thing already.

Plus we are getting some great ideas about moving the Mike-mobile back to Laurens.

Let me bring everyone up to date on the timming of things as I understand them at this point. Mike was told he would be in Houston most of February. That being the case, Paula will need the family car while she is there with him. When we know a tentative date for them to head home, I'll post an update.

For now, we will wait to see how Mike recovers and then start to firm up the plans to get the car back to Laurens when a tentative date of departure surfaces. Several generous offers are already on the table so I am confident we can get it done.

Stay tuned and keep a good thought for Mike and Paula!

Dern. I am dang near speechless.... How do you thank people who think up things like this, as well as those who participate?

Reporting for surgery at 0600 tomorrow (Wednesday). The first thing they intend to do is take a look at the portion of the liver that they intend to leave in place. Apparently my LH side is on the small end of normal (20%), and at the very limit of what is safely needed. If it looks completely healthy, they plan to proceed with the complete re-section (removal of the other 80% or so). If he does not feel completely confident with what he sees, he plans to limit blood flow to the side slated for removal, and have me return in 4 weeks for the final resection. In that period the 'good' side will have more than doubled in size because of the flow restriction to the other side, reducing the risks.

God forbid this should ever happen to Chad or Monty; no more Amber Bock! It's a good thing I have not made heavy drinking a lifelong activity.
So the short story is I don't know tonight what I'll wake up to at mid-day tomorrow. It'll either be relatively minor incisions from Laproscopic camera insertion only, or a really big slit with lots of stitches (my first personal body zipper). If the former, we'll have to drive back up to Laurens, and drive back down yet again in another four weeks. The timing of which will likely knock me out of Sun-N-Fun for the first time since 1985. If the latter, I'm sure I will greatly relish the thought of a Baron ride versus an Explorer ride. Probably no more than 4 hours non-stop by Baron, versus hours (and two days) of driving time in the Explorer.

Either way Mike it sounds like you are heading in a good direction.

Count me in for a travel donation as soo as I get back to Virginia this weekend.
Paul

Mike Hagans,

Depending on the day you get here to Laurens, I'll be glad to fly you to Raleigh or Birmingham, weather permitting (I"m not IFR yet <bummer>). So there is one option for the trip if it needs to be...

Monty

Checks in the mail, and I hope Harold keeps those props out of sync the whole trip so Mike doesn't get any ideas about moving to a Baron. Help us out here, Harold? Have a great trip.

Dan

Mike deserves the red carpet treatment, and the magic carpet ride in the Baron. So I'm sending a little to help, and if we're short I'll send more.
thanks for all you do for us Mike, and to this wonderful organization.

Good luck on Wednesday, Mike. You'll be in my thoughts for the best news possible! Mark and I will do anything we can to help you get back home when you are ready. Take care!

I'm in.

Mike & Paula, Sorry, we missed in Houston, during January. Maybe we can make it happen during February.

Not so fast, big boy. Remember who is picking up your truck in Houston for the first leg back to Baton Rouge. Don't be surprised to receive a CARFAX report stating that your truck was last seen leaving south out of Tijuana after being sold for $2,000.00.
