Potential SE Fly-ins for 2017

Climbing to Cruise
Below is a rough outline of several SE events I hope we can enjoy for the first quarter of 2017. The first and third events are regularly scheduled local EAA fly-in breakfasts that we are welcome to attend. I'll try to make those, but would love to have a member who lives nearby to honcho that gathering. If just a couple folks drop in...great, just take a couple shots of the group/airplanes and either post it on the BAC site; or zap to my phone and I can upload.

The other three are fly-ins at KCEW (I tried to host last year but only myself and Bob Schmidt enjoyed that!), the Ron Alexander Celebration of Life at Candler Field Museum and the annual Sun N Fun which historically has drawn a good number of BACers. As always, would love to have others step up to help with these events and/or certainly entertain any ideas for other gatherings within the SE region.

1. Breakfast Fly-in at the Flying W Air Ranch, 28 January, Hosted By The Flying FOOLZ, EAA Chapter 1489.

When: Saturday, Jan. 28th, 9 AM - 11 AM

What: $5 Breakfast: Eggs, Pancakes, Sausage, Cheese Grits, Fresh Fruit,Coffee, Orange Juice

Where: Flying W AirRanch (9FL1), 123.0, 3400 ft. grass, 09/27, 28-41-00.9680N/082-09-27.3120W

2. BAC Fly-In to Crestview, FL (KCEW) 16-19 February.

Military aircraft tours, USAF Armament Museum, fly-out to Sky Ranch (18FD), beach, golf, etc.

Thursday, 16 Feb, Arrive KCEW.

Friday, 17 Feb, tours of AC-130, CV-22 and F-35 at nearby Hurlburt and Eglin AFB's.

Saturday, 18 Feb, fly-out to my field, Sky Ranch/Park (18FD), for cookout at neighbor's hangar (signed hold harmless agreement required...09/27, 3,000', 122.9, flat, wide smooth grass strip open approaches...nothing like Gaston's or Abel Island...easy peasy!). Short, 9 mile flight from KCEW on 290 heading.

17 or 18 Feb, dinner at Props Pub and Grill.

19 Feb, pull chocks or remain as you desire for beach, golf, partying etc!

I'll need full name, date of birth, and citizenship of all attendees by about a week prior. Myself, as retired USAF, have access to both Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field, but it's the access to the flight line and secure facilities on those bases that require advance notice and qualified escorts.

Various hotel chains are available in Crestview as well as the Ft. Walton Beach/Destin area. Enterprise rental car available at KCEW.

3. Annual St. Patrick Fly-in, Dublin, GA, Saturday, 18 March 7:00 AM - 12:00 PM, W.H."Bud" Barron Airport (KDBN) Dublin Georgia, EAA Chapter 1195 Annual St. Patrick Fly-In Pancake Breakfast.

4. Ron Alexander Celebration of Life at the Candler Field Museum (GA2), 25 March.
Last Aug, I hosted a small fly-in at this field whose owner, Ron Alexander, gave us a tour of his airport, Peachstate Aerodrome which is home to a youth program, flying club, Barnstormers Grill and fly-n Airpark. Tragically, on 17 November, Ron and an FAA examiner were killed in a recently restored Curtiss JN-4, Jenny. He was a good friend to many, patriot, aviation pioneer and entrepreneur.

Rwy 13/31, 122.72 (unmonitored), relatively smooth sod, 2,400' x 100', 950 ft AGL, downhill to the NW. It's located about an hour south of Atlanta and close to Griffin-Spalding County Airport (6A2) if you prefer a paved runway alternative. Several hotel chains are located in Griffin, but I would imagine most can fly to/from same day.

The Candler Field Museum is a living museum located in rural Williamson GA where old aeroplanes still fly, antique cars still drive and the sights and sounds of the 1920s era come to life every day. The terminal and main hangar represent the motif of Atlanta's first commercial airport, Candler Field, circa late '20s. Click on www.peachstateaero.com for more details.

5. Sun N Fun, Lakeland, FL, Lakeland Linder Regional Airport (KLAL), 4-9 April.
Plan to occupy the Type Club tent as last year. Will need volunteers to pull shifts at the tent. Good deal in that your admission and parking is paid for the days you work a shift. Plus, they feed you and I got a 12 pack of Bud Light last year...not a bad deal! Great chance to meet folks and compare/contrast other type clubs. Fun and friendly atmosphere. Will also plan a BAC dinner probably Thursday as has been in the past. Easier to obtain reservations before the crowded weekend. Details to follow. Last year we enjoyed great food and service at Manny's Chophouse...will try to rebook this time.

Already have a couple of volunteers who want to work shifts that week. Call or email with questions.

Wishing all of you a Happy/Prosperous New Year.

On Saturday January 14th 2017 at 8:00 am the Air Commando Foundation will kick off their 2nd annual Brewton (Brewton Airport, AL, 12J)
Poker Run Fly-in and Pancake Breakfast!!! Great food, Great Entertainment, Poker Run, Flour Bombing Competition and an Overnight Campout. Make your plans to attend now. Be sure to watch their Facebook page closely for updates and details.

I might attend...sounds like fun. Whomever does attend, please take some good pics and upload on the BAC site.

Contacted a Sun n Fun point of contact today and BAC is welcome again in the type club tent as last year. I will be getting an application email in a couple weeks and will forward information via this website (have a couple volunteers already). Great opportunity to foster fellowship among other type clubs, plus your admission and parking charge are waived those days you volunteer to work in the tent...great deal! Stay tuned for more details.

Charley, great start to 2017 SE fly-ins. The trip to Crestview in February looks interesting and I've already flight planned it. Will just depend on what kind of window the winter weather will allow for flying from here that week. Hopefully it will work.

Brad

Sounds great Brad...let's hope for some great weather. Last year Bob Schmidt and I enjoyed 70 degree weather...understand little cooler up yonder!

Trying to put together a rough schedule for the Crestview (KCEW) fly-in mentioned above. Looks like the tours for 17 Feb are shaping up nicely. Initial plan is for Boeing contractor Rory Skelly to conduct the AC-130 Gunship and CV-22 tours to start at Hurlburt Field from 0900 till around lunch. At 1330, I have instructor pilot LTC Joe "Mama" Campbell, USN scheduled to provide us with the F-35 briefing/tour at Eglin AFB. Good news is the F-35 squadron has an open house that day, so we don't have to mess with security paperwork. However, I will have to provide passes for you to enter both bases. But, flightline passes will not be required.

That evening, and since we're still in the neighborhood, the plan is to have a group dinner at Props Pub and Grill in Ft Walton Beach.

The rest of the plan remains as specified above.

I will probably not attend the Brewton Fly-in/Poker Run on 14 Jan, as I have another commitment that morning.

Stay tuned for latest, greatest.

Wow Charley, you really ought to quit slacking and get busy planning down there!

One day I'll make it to a Peachstate Aerodrome event. Hoping for this March, we'll see.

Bob

Thanks Bob, mainly just bouncing off already existing local flyins. You ought to try to make it to KCEW in Feb.

I am planning on a Bahamas trip immediately before or after Sun N Fun in April. Since I will be close I might as well enjoy some island time. If anyone is interested this is a good time to get paperwork started.

Latest plan is to combine the 18 Feb fly-out to my home field (18FD) with my local EAA Chapter 108 monthly meeting. Looking at a 0930 departure from KCEW and meeting start at 18FD at 1000. Hopefully we'll have a couple different model baby Beeches available for a little 'show and tell' to my chapter. Meeting is to be held at Sam Dawson's hangar followed by a cookout there.

Couple folks asked about locally recommended accommodations. KCEW FBO recommended the Comfort Inn, 900 Southcrest Dr, Crestview, FL, 850-682-1481...rates from ~$65-$85 depending on when you book and other special discount rates available to you. Located 8.5 miles from KCEW.

Inquired about group fuel discount rates at KCEW...stay tuned. Also, plan to have a group dinner Friday, 17 Feb at Props Brew Pub and Grill...should have a separate room dedicated to us. Short drive from Eglin AFB after the F-35 tour that afternoon.

I will most likely be attending sun n fun again and will help in BAC tent again..not sure what days but most likely thurs, fri.

This is still in the early stages of planning but I will likely spend some time on some of the quieter areas of the Bahamas slightly before or after Sun n Fun. If anyone is interested in joining we can make it an official BAC event and get started on organizing.

I have not decided on which island yet. Lots to choose from and I always find some good deals. There are no long overwater legs really. Florida to Bimini is about the longest leg overwater. But, I like to island hop some while I am there so I do carry a lot of water safety gear. In the BAC archives there are a few articles about my Bahamas flights and we had a seven plane group on a BAC to the Bahamas flyin. I would be open to pretty much anyplace in the Bahamas except Nassau, Freeport, or Chubb cay. Andros is close and remote feeling with some really cheap places to stay.

Folks don't forget about the Flying W Ranch fly-in pancake breakfast this Saturday 28 January. I won't be able to fly there since I'm on the road, but there's an outside chance I might be driving through that morning. Nevertheless, whom ever shows, enjoy and take some pics and post on the website.. Scroll above or consult the calendar for details.

Just made Sun n Fun reservations for around 25-30 folks at Manny's Original Chophouse for Thursday, 6 April 2017 at 6:00 pm. Any later was not recommended due to the large dinner crowd...especially during the airshow week. They'll try their best to seat us together. It's posted on the calendar. Same place as last year...great food and service.

Any updates/changes I'll keep y'all posted.

Don't forget next week's fly-in at Crestview, FL 16-19 Feb (KCEW, scroll above for details) which is loaded with activities including tours of local military might (AC-130, CV-22, F-35) and fellowship other local aviators including my EAA chapter. Please call with questions/comments. Got most everything (airport, hotel, rental car, fly-out, group dinner, tours) planned out. Weather's been unseasonably warm this winter and last year this time was around a balmy 75 degrees.

Details are also posted on the calendar.

So far, Brad Mitchell and maybe Bob Schmidt plan to fly down. Let's make it a great time.

Cheers,

I have my reservation at Comfort Inn beginning Thursday night. Just waiting to see if the weather up this way will cooperate so I can fly.

I'm not gonna make it this year. Too bad, because it was a great (though small) event last year. Next year????
