Potential Fly-Ins for 2016

Climbing to Cruise
Hey folks. Charley Booton, the new SE director here. Trying to line up a couple fly-ins to start off 2016 with some fun in sunny (not the case in the last two weeks, however) northwest Florida! Right now I have penciled in President's week in my calendar. Plan is to host at my home field, 18FD, Sky Ranch (3000' grass strip...less challenging than Adel during BACFest). If you choose, several other paved airports nearby...KCEW, KDTS and 2R4. At my field, I might be able to hangar some airplanes, however. Arrive Mon, 15 Feb and depart Thur, 18 Feb. Have much coordination and fine tuning to do...so stay tuned for more details/updates/changes. Lots to see down here. I'm retired USAF and still have connections with folks at nearby bases. Trying to arrange tours of the AC-130 Spectre gunship and CV22 tilt-rotor at Hurlburt Field on one day followed by an F-35 tour at Eglin AFB the next. Once again...still in the planning stage so stay tuned.

This month however, is the Breakfast Fly-In and Poker Run at Brewton Airport (12J) on Sat, 16 Jan starting at 9:00 am. I haven't organized a gathering for this, but just FYI. I participated couple years back and it was a hoot. I know I've seen it posted on our website already...I'll try to be there. Whomever would like to go, perhaps give a shout on the website...maybe a mini-gathering is in order.

Other ideas involve our usual gathering at Sun N Fun and perhaps a 4 June gathering at Peach State Aerodrome (GA2) for their Vintage Day Event. GA2 is in Williamson, GA near Griffin, GA about hour's drive south of Atlanta. It's also a grass strip/fly-in community with a fantastic restaurant called the Barnstormer Grill. The field has a vintage aircraft museum, actively restores rare antique airplanes (most of which are flyable) and hosts many airshows/events year-round. They recently restored an ultra-rare Curtiss JN-4 Jenny. Paved Griffin Airport (6A2) is close by.

Triple Tree Aerodrome Fly-in in Woodruff, SC on 7-11 Sep I've heard is a blast and perhaps we can work a gathering there as well. BACFest in Oct should wrap up the year nicely.

Once again, please understand all planning is in the early stages and welcome any other ideas and/or volunteers to organize these events.

Fly safely and looking forward to some good fun and fellowship!

Charlie, I would be willing to do-host a Bahamas trip this winter if there is some interest. This time to a quiet and remote area with good bonefishing, cheap prices, mediocre food.

I'm Heading for Eleuthera this weekend, but by airline. We might be heading back down there sometime in early March. Spring break for my wife. Hopefully I can load up the family plane at that time. Paul, where did you get your saltwater fishing gear, fly rod.

mix of flies etc. I think about $140.00 depending on rod weight etc. not specifically salt water but holding up well for me. You flying into North Eleuthera I assume? Staying at that end of the island?

No, we fly into Rock Sound and then drive to Windermere from there. Savannah Sound is right there at Windermere thus my interest in fly fishing for those bonefish. I also will try to go diving in the south where the walls are but you need a group of four or five people in order to get them to go out. Otherwise I'll head up to Harbour Island and dive there. Personally I will fly to North Eleuthera, go through customs, fill-up and then head to Rock Sound. From there to wherever such as the Exumas.

OK Charley, are we going to battle over SC? I thought that was settled at BACFest!

Here's what I have as possibles for Mid-Atlantic:

SC: Triple Tree in Sept
NC: Asheville in May for the Fly, Camp, Hike and Fish Fly-In
MD: Frederick for lunch and then a short hop over to Clearview for short field landing
WV: Windwood for lunch
VA: Shenandoah to tour Select Aero Parts and then a short hop over to W13 for a burgers and dogs on the grill at my hangar.

When you do lunch on the Connie in NJ, let's do a DE fly-in that morning and get two for one!

Alan

Lets throw in a Golf outing overnight fly in around 4 July . Any interest . Culpeper fly over, Flying Circus Bealeton Va .

Sorry it seems only half my message posted. Cabella's has great complete kits for about $150 depending on your choice of rod weight etc. rod, reel, line, tools, case and a nice mix of flies.
Eleuthera as you know is a nice mix of largely developed residential with grocery stores etc but still retaining a lot of old Bahamas feel.

Charlie,

I'll be in Pensacola Beach in February and would be very interested in the tours, maybe more. No plane, I'll have to drive.

Bob

Charlie,

i can can host Triple Tree in the fall. Will try to make the Florida event if it makes the calendar.

Peace,
Don

You're right Doc White...new guy syndrome. You got it...not my region anyway...sorry. Looking at making some amendments to the plan. Figured we'll fly in to Crestview, Bob Sikes Airport (KCEW). Plenty of parking, reasonable gas, long runway, instrument approaches and rental cars. Several hotel chains in Crestview.

We can then do a fly out to my field (18FD) for burgers, etc. A friend and ex-BAC member Sam Dawson will host that event at his hangar...he flies Birddogs now. Rough plan now is to arrive at KCEW Sunday, 14 Feb, fly out to 18FD 15 Feb Mon for the picnic and then reserve 16 and 17 Feb for the military tours. Tours have to be during the week when POCs are at work. Don't know if we could knock out all tours in one day...plans TBD. Folks can blast off on 17 or 18 Feb.

As far as other events, I'm very open to suggestions and would welcome whomever would like to help out.

I might show for the 16 Jan Poker Run at Brewton (12J)...breakfast at 0900 and pilots brief at 1030...lots of fun.

I'll post on the calendar and update as required.

So I will change my region affiliation to mid Atlantic and make my offer to Dr White...

I'd be happy to host at Triple Tree. Awesome place and all regions should make it a point to come hang out with us...

Peace,
Don

Regarding the 14-18 Feb fly-in to KCEW...I will need a headcount (name, date of birth, citizenship) NLT 1 Feb as I need to provide a visit request to the organizations conducting the AC-130, CV-22, and F-35 tours. Unfortunately, for security purposes, we might be relegated to a limited number since the guides can escort only so many folks at once. I'll get more details as the date approaches. Access to the bases is no problem since I'm retired military and have escort privileges. I'll look into a rental vehicle large enough to in which to fit most of us...otherwise I have other active/retired buds to help us on base if required. I'll also check on group discounts at local hotels and fuel/parking discounts at KCEW. Should be a great time. Lots to do here on the Emerald Coast/Lower Alabama/Redneck Riviera...restaurants, bars, golf, etc.

Welcome to the Mid-Atlantic Don! You're penciled in as the host!

Well guys and gals...got most everything lined up: F-35, AC-130 and CV-22 tours; fly-in to Sky Ranch (18FD); and group dinner at Props Grill and Brewery (owned by retired special ops flyers). Plus, lots of other activities available...Air Commando Museum, USAF Armament Museum, golf, beaches...you name it. As mentioned, I'll need names by 1 Feb to allow time for security paperwork. Plan is to arrive KCEW on Sun, 14 Feb, fly-out 15 Feb, tours 16 or 17 Feb, and wheels up 18 Feb. Will be a great time.

Regarding security paperwork for the F-35, AC-130 and CV-22 tours during the 14-18 Feb Crestview, FL (KCEW) fly-in, I'll need full name, date of birth, and citizenship of all attendees by 1 Feb.

Myself, as retired USAF, have access to both Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field, but it's the access to the flight line and secure facilities on those bases that require advance notice and qualified escorts.

Couple of changes regarding the Crestview, FL (KCEW) Fly-in. I've been able to extend the due date for security paperwork for the F-35, AC-130 and CV-22 tours. I'll need full name, date of birth, and citizenship of all attendees by Thursday, 11 Feb. Myself, as retired USAF, have access to both Eglin AFB and Hurlburt Field, but it's the access to the flight line and secure facilities on those bases that require advance notice and qualified escorts.

Current plan: F-35 tour at Eglin AFB, Wednesday, 17 Feb at 8:30 a.m. and AC-130 and CV-22 tours, that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Hurlburt Field. We'll grab lunch between tours.

Also, due to minimal response, I'm dispensing with the Monday, 15 Feb fly-out/cook-out to my airfield, 18FD.

Therefore, you can delay your arrival to either 15 or 16 Feb. I have a group dinner scheduled for either 16 or 17 Feb at Props Brew Pub and Grill. I recommend we have the dinner after the tours on the 17th, but we can adjust based on preferences.

Response has been minimal so far...would love to hear from more of y'all. As mentioned, much more to do here beyond the scheduled events down here along the beautiful Emerald Coast!

Cheers,

Charley Booton

Charley,
I recieved the personal email invitation (thanks!), and I would love to make it, but it is just too much of a stretch for me.
Maybe next time?

Thanks
