Penn Yan Aero Tour Pre-event to BACFest 2011, Penn Yan, NY, (KPEO), Thurs. Sept. 29th

Flight Levels
Join us for a tour of Penn Yan Aero starting at 1:00pm. If you arrive a little bit later that will be ok. Devon Snyder the National Sales Director for Penn Yan Aero will give us a tour including a demonstration of their Dyno. Tour will take about 1-1/2 hrs. KPEO is about 15 minutes by air from KITH. www.PennYanAero.com

The Penn Yan tour has been posted long enough to qualify as a Northeast BAC event. I will be there Thursday afternoon to make a list for President's Trophy points.

My guess is that this would count as your long mileage as the flight to Ithaca for BACfest is quite short from KPEO Penn Yan.

Maybe you get to choose the longer one of the two. I'll leave the final decision to the president.

Tom Corcoran, Regional Director Northeast

I may try to fly in, comin up from DC might as well hop on over, I'll aim to be there by 12:30

Steve

I will be stuck in Ithaca on Thursday and can't go to Penn Yan. But if you go, check out the runway "junction". At right angles, one is 30' higher in elevation and you approach/depart right over the crossing runway. The more airports you visit, the more and different runway set ups you find.

Runway 01-19 is the longer runway and will be preferred unless there are strong crosswinds. Runway 28-10 is the "tee" runway and actually has no intersection with 01-19. Be aware that runway 28 has a displaced theshold and a very definite downslope. If you land 28, have your airspeed under control and expect to have the runway fall out from under you as you flare.

My personal plans are to go to the Glenn Curtis Museum Thursday morning in Hammondsport. Then drive up to Penn Yan Aero for the tour and back to the hotel for the reception at 5:00pm. If anyone wants to tag along for the day they are more than welcome to until the car fills up. Or you can caravan in your car if you drove. Otherwise I will see you at Penn Yan Aero for the fly-in. If you need to reach me contact me on my cell phone 317-626-2583. See you there.

I will be going to the Curtis museum and then to Penn Yan. Will be driving rather then flying. Hopefully the rain and fog will dissipate.

Harvey

I have a good chance of making it - picking up Dan in 15 minutes at KPHL. Not sure if Dan will tag along or get dropped in Ithaca. If I make it then hopefully by 1p - 130p at the latest.

Does anyone know if PennYan or any other engine overhaul facility is offering any discounts to BAC members. I just found out I will need an overhaul. No one caught the fact that the plane sat virtually unused for almost 2 and a half years after the engine was field overhauled and now the camshaft and lifters are completely shot. We found out when we pulled a front cylinder to try and fix an oil leak.

Just a thought, why not replace the cam and lifters instead of a full overhaul? I was quoted $20K from PennYan for an overhaul, with new jugs, a couple weeks ago.

I just went through the list of people who have been in business long enough to have a decent warranty system, and are recognized nationally. I was quoted, for a 2000 hour engine, $25700.00, form Penn Yan , and $23700.00, from Western Skyways. that assumes that you are not needing a cam, or crank, and the core is reusable.

The difference between Rick's quote and mine are the cylinders. The angle valve engines (Supers and Sierras) don't have any PMA's replacements, so you gotta pay Lycoming's full boat price.

We decided to go with sending the engine to Penn Yan for replacement of the Cam and Lifters and a full IRAN inspection. They will call if they find anything that will require it to be completely overhauled and we can change the work order at that time. Cost to me will be $10,500 plus the cost of removal reinstall hoses govenor overhaul and frieght.
