Pell City this weekend

Tom,

I didn't see anything about an airfield on the state park site.

Is it in the park like some of the Kentucky state parks (oh and Petit Jean in Arkansas) or just near by?

Airport (8A1) is across the lake from the park, maybe 2-3 miles straight line, but estimate about 8-10 road miles going over the high bridge and up the mountain. I'm more or less local so I can arrange car transport via my car/cellphone, or get a van for the weekend. Pontoon boats can be rented at the park and could be used as "ferry" service. Fishing boats and canoes also available, but I'm not sure what the winter availability is. While discussing this at KPLR, Jonathon Cartee suggested that a water taxi could probably be arranged, or perhaps just drive back and forth by road. If the wind is good, might be able to arrange a sailing excursion. I used to have a sailboat at Guntersville. Nephew-in-law still has a Catalina 30 at the marina adjacent to the airport. Also there is a Searey (LSA amphibian - see Aviation Consumer this month) dealer at 8A1, which is very amenable to demo rides, I'm told.

See: http://airnav.com/airport/8A1

Look at the sectional on Airnav above. Lodge is on that high bluff across the lake, just due East of the airport. Very picturesque overlooking the lake. By the way, the park also has chalets and cabins adjacent to the lodge if "hotel room" type accommodations is not for you. Also have rustic camping for those so inclined, but probably removed from the Lodge. The more I write about it, the more I'm liking the idea.

Best....

Tom,

I did look it up on AirNav but wasn't sure where the park was in relation to the airport.

It does look like a fun spot.

I may have to put floats on Minnie.

My wife has been wanting a fishing boat.

Troll her at minimum controllable airspeed. Be ready to hit the throttle if she snags a big 'un... or a big 'un snags her....

On the way home, got as far as Birmingham before I had to put her down due to weather, made it in before the bottom fell out. Atlantic on the East ramp very friendly. Had a great dinner, got to see my nephew and spent the night. Hung out at the FBO all morning after breakfast, caught a break around noon with a diversion for weather. Flew to Jackson, landed for fuel and then on to back home to Stennis. Looking to make it to LuLu's next month.

Til then.
