Level Cruise
Longview Fly-in.

10:30-11:30 Q&A with FBO personnel. Learn what services good FBOs offer and how to use them. Also, get your questions answered on topics such as calling ahead, marshalling, parking and fueling, etc.

11:30-1:00 Barbecue lunch. Furnished by BAC and KRS. Donations accepted.

1:30- ??? Tower visit arranged by KRS.

Notes:
If you are driving in (poor soul), the entrance to KRS is separate from the main airport entrance. About 1/4 mile south of main entrance and well marked.
Get taxiway diagram at:http://www.airnav.com/airport/KGGG
The ramp north of KRS ("FBO" on diagram) Is closed, be prepared to use taxiway N to get to KRS.

The forecast as of 1700CST Thursday for 600CST Saturday shows a front lying on a line from Austin to Texarkana to Little Rock to Memphis and on ENE. Possible isolated TS in far NE TX and most of AR, continuing across northern MS. It won't be CAVU for those north and east of GGG, but looks doable.

We are leaving for Longview as soon as the Redhead can get off Friday afternoon. Other than when I am in the air, my cell phone is: 214 733-6815. If you need an answer, call KRS at 903 643-2010. Ryan Kidder is the contact, but they are all involved in it.

See y'all at longview!

Got up early, took a look outside, called flight service. They said to wait until 10AM, waited. Still no go...

Does this part of the world ever have two weekends with decent flying weather? This spring has had one week in three where we've had decent flying weather. The rest have been, well, CRAP!

Makes me miss California.

Longview Report.......

It became more of a drive-in than a fly-in.

Rod and Denise Boyd drove in from Terrell.
Robert Jennings drove in from McKinney.
Mike Murphy drove in from Austin.

We flew in from Tango 31.
Gene and Becky McPherson flew in from Magnolia AR.

The "tower tour" became a "2 hour cruise" through all the intricacies of ATC. Tower and TRSA. Many thanks to John Heath, our knowledgeable and informative tour guide.

The lunch was some fine finger licking Barbecue with all the fixins.

And we cannot thank our host, KRS Aviation and Ryan Kidder enough. They have a sparkling facility, staffed by the nicest, most helpful people you could ever hope to meet.

And a BIG thank you to Bo and Sandra for going down the night before to setup our Longview "Rodent Roundup"! The tower tour was OUTSTANDING!!! John was very thorough and took us throughout the system from intial contact to handoff to the tower to taxi to parking. His explanation helped put everything in perspective for me.

Becky (the brunette) and I enjoyed getting to know some of you and look forward to the next get together.

Sorry we missed meeting Cloyd and Jay but I understand the weather and mechanical issues you had.

Glad to hear that the Longview fly in wasn't a wash out. I want to thank Bo for putitng together an informative Saturday for everyone who was able to make it. 3 other planes from Arkansas was planning on being at longview. Keith Green in Fort Smith was weathered out. Dean Sikes from Pine Bluff and I had decided to work together, as I was heading to Pine Bluff to ride down with Dean. This morning I got within 35 miles of Pine Bluff, and the curtain came down (all the way to the ground). Where I had to turn around, the front had stalled out. It was apparently a solid line running all the way from Fort Smith to Memphis, and from what I could see at 1500 ft, I agree. So I had to return to Searcy.

Do we have anyone interested in meeting up at the lodge on top of petit jean in about 4 weeks?

Thanks
Jay

Jay:

Becky and I have checked our schedules. We can make it 3 weeks from today (4/22) or 5 weeks from today (5/6); but are committed the weekend of 4/29. We've wanted to fly to Petit Jean for some time. Hope this works out.

Where is Petit Jean? Anyone have an airport code?

My first thought this morning when I went out to get the paper: Where was this yesterday?

Where is Petit Jean?????

Petit Jean is near Morrilton, Arkansas.

The airport identifier is KMPJ. That's a GREAT idea.

I've never flown in there but I have camped there several years ago. As I recall the lodge there has a really nice view.

I think you guys would really enjoy it.

Petit Jean sounds like a nice jaunt, but...

I'll have to check the schedules with the Redhead.

Per Airnav, there are absolutely no services available and the lodge is 3 miles away. How 'bout the logistics?

Bo

The man that runs the airport at Petit Jean is very accomodating and will deliver everyone to the lodge if need be. His airport car is a suburban best I remember. There is free camping at the airport if anyone likes camping, but there are no trees at the airport to set your camp up under. You might be better off to camp in the 'regular' camp ground.

The lodge does have an awesome view, but then again so does the base to final turn over the airport. There is a nature trail that goes down to a waterfall, through the woods. I don't know how far it is from the lodge, but you can walk out to the point and see most of Arkansas as you look over the Arkansas river valley.

IF we can arrange a car, a group could go the car museum. It is really cool, but you ususally don't think to find a car museum with a state park. So there are a few things to do when you aren't talking planes.

But, from Airnav:
From David Minor on 09-Feb-2006
FBO recently closed. Courtesy truck still parked, but no keys to be found. Airport now owned by state park that will provide shuttle to the lodge/restaurant for a small fee. Recommend calling ahead.

Noting date on the airnav entry, I would presume that it supercedes the AOPA entry.

It really was a great fly-in even if half of us drove! Kudos to Bo for arranging it and for his efforts in securing a fantastic tower tour. I have done ATC tours in the past and this one, by far, surpassed those by a mile! Gonna be hard to beat this one. And what a super FBO. Great facility.

Denise and I had a very pleasant time and enjoyed meeting new friends and visiting with those we'd met before. Sure wished the weather hadn't spoiled it for so many but we understand completely and would have made the same call. Glad all made it home safely.

The Petit Jean idea sounds great. We'll certainly try. Depends, naturally, on our schedule.

See ya at the next one.

It was all serendipity.

I asked Ryan about a tower tour with the hope that since the TRSA was on site, we could see both. Ryan arranged it.

They (FAA personnel) had arranged their schedule so that John could be available until noon. And since there was only one group (10 max size) to take around, he could spend all the time allotted on a single tour. He wound up giving us nearly 2 hours.

If credit is to be given, I'll take 5. Give Ryan 25 and John 70.

New Photos under the PHOTO GALLERY for Longview.

Today, it is just under the photo gallery, After I get Tim to give me a hand, it should be under South Central Fly-In's.

Thanks BO, everyone who could make it had fun.
