BAC MADE IT TO THE ICE RUNWAY. Today 2/18/17. Weather was great. You can still
land on the ice runway at Alton Bay, New Hampshire any day and get PT credit.
Just send a photo or a sworn affidavit, a blood sample and photo ID. Eh?

If a guy in a Piper can do it, so can we! Watch the video.

Cool! We're already landing 208's, Beavers, and Shorts "boxcars" on Lake Hood up here in Anchorage. I've landed on a few frozen lakes: Devil's Lake ND, with a Baron to go ice fishing. Lake Waconia MN in a King Air 350, I wasn't flying, and not my idea of fun. And once made "mystery tracks" on Lake Harriett inside the Class D of MSP in a 7ECA after a fresh snow (xponder off). Wish I had the time and gumption to land the 'Deal on your lake!

aftcg - Eric,

You may have opened a can of worms here. The folks at Alton Bay, New Hampshire always say that theirs is the only official ice runway in all the US (including I guess Hawaii). Now you list other places there in Alaska upon which you have landed.

This is the fact that the New Englanders state in support of their position: Alton Bay is an identified - B18 - official seaplane lane for use all year. When it is frozen it becomes a solid water runway.

Does that make it the ONLY one?

Tom Corcoran - Yesterday I landed my Sundowner at Gardner, Massachusetts and the runway was glare-ice. Does that count as an ice landing?

Tom, GDM was only iced because those wind turbines up on the hill have a profound cooling effect...don' they?

One more canned worms. I checked PAFA (Fairbanks) notams too. They have a waterway at PAFA, obviously freezes in like, august, and thaws around june. :) They close the waterway to aircraft not equipped with skis these months. Whereas PALH says EXC WHEEL/SKI ACFT. So I surmise that PALH is the "other" only frozen lake airport. We're going to need an expert to make the decision.

Also, I haven't flown any airplane in AK off a lake, yet. Gunna get the seaplane commercial add-on. That's my summer project so I can get some respect from my AK wifey. She's so smart...right before I bought the plane, she took one look at a pic of the Sierra and said, "That'll land on Dad's lake, once." I was both embarrassed and impressed.

THE ICE RUNWAY IS OPEN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE.

As of Sunday January 29, 2017 there is 12" of ice. It is reported very slick. Presently all aircraft must back-taxi to parking. Nearest weather is KLCI Laconia.

The ice runway update information line recording is 603 875-3498.

See you on February 11th for the BAC fly-in

Must airplanes be retrofitted with ice skis? -to me it makes sense since tires will have no traction on ice-.

Thanks,

Arturo

Arturo, search for New Hampshire Ice Runway or Alton Bay on YouTube and you'll see plenty of videos showing tires on ice, successfully. Looks very cool (no pun intended) so if you are within reach of this it sounds like a gotta do item.

As a Canadian who drove and flew in the snow for 2 decades before moving south I promise you that we can use our tires in winter!!! You just have to put chains on the tires... :-)

Chains and snow props required

"Sundowner on Glare Ice". BAC made it to Alton Bay, New Hampshire on 2/18/2017. You can go you anytime and get full credit for the flight.

alton bay 014.jpg

There was a slight layer of snow on the surface which made the landing slightly less glaring. TC
