Keosauqua Iowa Fly-in Breakfast

Orbiting Earth
This Saturday there is a fly-in breakfast at 6K9, Keosauqua, Iowa. It is unique grass strip along the Des Moines River with a 2,300' runway, but there is a 400' displaced threshold on the east end and 1,000' on the west, so there is a lot more room than just 2,300'. The winds are supposed to be out of the west on Saturday, with temps starting out at 69F, so there is more than enough length. I will be there with the Sierra about 7:30 and Jim is coming from Dubuque with the Super III. If anyone else would like to join in, we can line them up and take some pictures. I didn't decide that the weather was ok with our recent hot weather until it was too late to announce an official fly-in, but if anyone would like to join in, we will be there.

Thanks for hosting this fly-in Denis. I would like to be there, but I have a wedding to go to that afternoon and my name will be mud if I am not there.

Sounds like fun, Denis. Maybe I can talk Dave Gribble and Kyle Setrum into flying over in a three-ship Super III formation!?!

Hope you guys can make it. We'll have to watch the weather, the rain goes through Friday night and hopefully it will clear out quickly. CID is definetly the hot spot for Super III's

Unless we get some fog after the storm front rolls through overnight, we should have VMC in the morning. Ceilings are forecast to drop after 1000 am as another front moves into the area. Looks like I'll be heading to Keosauqua for breakfast!

I'd like to join you guys but my kids have a soccer tournament tomorrow. I'm going to fly down there sometime for fun though. I looked it up Google Maps and it looks similiar to Able Island that we landed at a few BACFests ago.

I just looked at the meters and the weather looks better than forecast last night. We are going to head to the airport in about 15 min. I talked to Jim and he is going to be there about 7:45. See you there Tom.

Was great to see Denis and Jim. For a variety of reasons they were about ready to roll out just as I taxied in. We had a few minutes to chat until I had to hot-foot it over to the chow line before they started throwing pancakes away. The weather was fine early morning, and CAVU for departure too. Winds straight down the grass strip made for uneventful landings. The FlyQ airport information had a note stating the runway may be ruff in spots - understatement of the day - one of the Comm/Nav radios dislodged from the stack twice!

On the return trip, the ATIS at KCID had 800' overcast ceilings, so the field was IFR. It happened to be mid-day, so multiple commercial aircraft were inbound. I was about 1500 AGL and could see the runways from 8-10 miles away while I circled the reservoir. Had to circle for 15 minutes before they could work me and another VFR pilot in with an S-VFR clearance. A minor inconvenience, but way better than two expensive UBER rides!

Overall good flying, good friends, and good eats made for a great Saturday morning!

The weather was good and they had a good turn out at 6K9 with about 35 planes. Tom had some adventures in getting fuel, so most of the planes were gone, and missed his arrival, but we did meet up and were able to get a picture. The three musketeers were the only (3) low wing tri-cycle gear planes there, but we showed those Maules that we can do grass too.

Thanks for coming Tom, we'll have to do the Amana fly-in you suggested this fall.
