Gaston's White River Resort - November 09, 2013

Looking back at the group photos, the three years I've been, we had 6 planes in 2004, 7 in 2005 and 8 in 2006. Jay may recall if there was another year greater than 8.

Save an extra seat at the dinner table and the bar. I think my friend and hangar mate, Cecil, will be coming with me.

Great, what does Cecil fly?

At the moment he owns half of a C-182 (up for sale) and a quarter of a Lightning LSA (also up for sale). He'll be riding with me. He (or his wife, also a pilot) owned an interest in a Sundowner at one time and he's flown Minnie before.

Since I've known Cecil, ten plus years, he's owned all or part of a Mooney, Cheetah, Eurofox and before I knew him a C-172 and a Cardinal. He's becoming a convert. He also flew in Annie when I had her.

I hope noaa's wind forcast is off for sat morning. I am looking at 55knot head winds from st louis to gastons. I think i could almost park Minnie above a spot and hover with those winds. Wonder what that will do for landing dropping in below tree line.

I'm a flatlander but Gaston's is in kinda a valley below some ridges so the winds down on the strip MIGHT not be as bad.

I was concerned with tree line or bluff causing a sudden change in velocity. That does not bother me as much as the head winds they are supposed to start tapering off during the day but first thing in the am should be 60 plus at 3000' over stl. I will talk to my flight inst about it friday and see what he thinks. He has flown into Gastons several times.

There was one year that it was really rough in the air on Saturday. I arrived on Friday, but I remember the leaves on the runway and where the planes parked would just kind of pop up off the ground straight up. Seems like that was the year that everyone had a bit of a tailwind on departure, and I also think it was the first time Bo came up to Gaston's. He didn't like the way everything was setting up, so he did a go around on his first attempt. When you get to Gaston's, think about doing a go around and see if you can figure out why I might remember something like that... Best that I remember, the winds calmed down quite a bit before we left.

just got home from work. the really bad winds are supposed to hit 100 miles north of stl now:) was not sure about taking off and climbing into 60 knot winds. I could have hovered Minnie backward if i wanted. I am hoping the storm continues to pull off to the north. Maybe by morning i will have calmer air to deal with.

The TAF for KBPK (about 5 miles east of Gaston's) is calling for winds 210 degrees at 10 knots tomorrow at 10 am.

That's pretty near ideal.

Maybe Brad will give a report on the condition of the turf and the winds after he lands this afternoon.

Brad reported in on the ground at Gaston's. Says Dean's plane is there but he hasn't found Dean yet.

Probably hasn't checked the bar yet. Or maybe Dean is still shuttling luggage.

The Friday 8 have arrived, Brad, Ann, Jay, Deanna, Dean, Dohnae, Sandy & Phyllis. The turf is in pretty good shape. The bump wasn't near as bad as I remembered. The bar is serving and we are about to head down for dinner.

Currently there is a LLWS potential in my area. Followed by moderate turbulence below 10,000 in the Outlook. Surface winds are forecast to be gusting to 25 knots until I get out of Indiana. Head winds initially will be 50 knots. A trip that would take 3 hours will take 4. I will continue to monitor the weather but it looks like I will not be attending. I was really looking forward to the trip and seeing you all.
