Fly Over the Boston Marathon

This is the only BAC event where we meet in the air.
As has been our custom, we will fly over the Boston Marathon as it starts and we continue over the 26.2 mile run from Hopkinton, Massachusetts to Boston.

What is special is that we get to see all the runners, all 30,000 of them. We also land and drive to the race course and watch the eventual winners hurry by us.

This is a "bring your own" picnic event. Eat by the side of the course just past the halfway point.

Boston Marathon Protocol 2026

Join me. This is what I will be doing. This is how we will meet up.

Sundowner N5162M (white green stripes) will depart 1B9 (Mansfield) at 9:00 in order to "join the round" at Hopkinton, Massachusetts to see the Elite Male Runners step off at 9:37.

Join the banner-tows at 1,400' MSL. Circle to the left. (Use the ATIS on 124.6 for altimeter setting). Talk on 123.025 or 122.75 whichever works. Be aware of helicopters below you at 900' circling right. There will be others above you about 2,000'. Keep your head on a swivel and do what the banner-tows do.

There may be a military fly-by over Hopkinton as the race starts. Heads up. Listen up. This is a maybe. The jets or Blackhawks are usually at 1,000'.

Then fly east along the southside of the Marathon Route. Looking down we will see the wheelchair athletes proceeding to Boston.

Upon reaching Route 128 (Needham TV towers) proceed back on the northside of the route until you reach Hopkinton again where we will see thousands of runners still waiting to start.

Then proceed to Norwood Airport (KOWD) and park the plane at Flight Level. We will get in the BAC luxury van and drive to a spot in Wellesley, Massachusetts to view the lead runners pass by on the second half of the race.

We eat our sandwiches, drink our beverages and ultimately drive back to Norwood Airport. Then we congratulate ourselves and go home.

Goal: See all the runners and the start. Meet fellow BACers. Do some precision flying in a crowd.
Repeating: Join the banner tows at 1,400' MSL. Circle to the left. (Use the ATIS on 124.6 for altimeter setting). Talk on 123.025 or 122.75 whichever works. Be aware of helicopters below you at 900' circling to the right. There will be others above you about 2,000'. Keep your head on a swivel and do what the banner-tows do.
