Fly-in to Fairbanks Alaska

We stayed in Watson Lake, YT, last night but got socked in at Whitehorse today. Wx promises to be better tomorrow.
Through the pass to Teslin is simply spectacular!

Here is one from Mark (gave to me) flying down the Alaskan Highway from Watson Lake to Whitehorse. Not much formation flying as the cameras and iPads were flappin' away because of the gorgeous scenery. We are having more fun than a bunch of monkeys with a football!

This is an interesting trip. Although I've flown in formation with Musketeer's and Super IIIs, this is my first Mouse formation flight for any distance. The first day we did about 7+ hours and I used ~ 2 qts of oil. So, I tanked up on oil in Billings, MT. Then, I dropped the RPMs to 2400 while carrying ~19" and found I didn't burn much oil at all. Since Billings I have added 1/2 qt. That's my new "formation power setting". It does take some time to get used to flying at Sundowner speeds, 100 - 105 KIAS (depending on altitude). However, my fuel burn has dropped dramatically. I haven't tallied up the trip so far, but it looks like it will be ~ 6.5 gph block burn. Apparently, the Sundowner burns something a bit more. I don't really know as Bob isn't saying much about that. But, we are all having fun (at least the two of us in the Sierra). Hopefully the weather gods will be kind for tomorrow as Hotels in Whitehorse are not cheap. Not much in the way of camping near the airport. It's also bloody cold outside!

Marty,

Enjoy the (rather large) wind direction indicator at Whitehorse.

Thanks for the photos and stories. As for the gph ..... oooowwww, oowww! (9.2 in my Sundowner at 103 knots) ...dude ....

I was flying at 2500 x 17". Apparently using 2400 x 19" provided enough combustion pressure to keep the rings expanded.

Yeah, that weather vane is just outside the terminal building. It was swinging side to side today.

Hi Folks,

All this talk about the Whitehorse windsock made me look...

WOW...

Thanks for sharing the beautiful pix!

They say, getting there is half the fun. But I have been to Fairbanks many times. So, I'm pretty sure, that getting there is more like 99% of the fun.

Enjoy your trip of a lifetime, my friends! I wish I was with you!

rain for three days. Bobcat in here today to bail us out. May actually fly tomorrow.

Multi-day rains (multi-week?) are a norm in Alaska. The family and I learned how to hike and camp and pack out in the rain during multi-day outings. Some trips we never got even a few hours of sun to dry out the equipment. Of course, the kids got tired of me saying "your dad's from south Texas, so never complain about the rain!"

Alaska does not require you to carry water in your survival kits. Lots of weight saved while camping ... just packed the little water filters for drinking water.

Best of luck and prayers for our travelers in the north country,

Nelson

Hi Nelson,

Are you really "The Most Interesting Man In The World" from the Dos Equis beer commercial ???
:) :) :)

It seems like you've lived a VERY interesting life... Looking forward to getting to meet you one day...
