Delta, UT (KDTA) Fly-In

Clinderman

Around The Moon
The local flying club, "Just Wingin It' is hosting an open house and breakfast this coming Saturday, May 19 from 9 AM to 11 AM. The event has been posted on the calendar and the SW RD notified. All we need now is for BAC members to show up.

Here is some info about the Delta airport (http://www.airnav.com/airport/KDTA).

Hope to see some members here. You will get PT points!

Two planes and two members made it to Delta this morning. Jason Hess and his group of budding pilots made it along with LeeAnne and me. See below:

Chris,

I would have gone this morning but weather over the mountains was not good. Who has the white, red and orange mouse in the background? It is the same color scheme as mine .

It was good to finally meet Chris and his lovely co-pilot in person...silly it had to be at an airport in the middle of no where to do so when we are soooo close. The kids had a blast, especially the nephew who had his very first plane ride from the right seat and hands on controls.

He said "I want to be a pilot" once we got back to U42!

I love to fly!

Jason,

That's a good looking airplane you have there! I hope to meet you and Chris sometime. Just wish we had a few more flyins in our neck of the woods.

Would Farmington or Durango be a good place for a fly-in? I've been to Farmington, but just passing through. Never been to Durango. Main airport is a bit out of town, and the town isn't too big. Either one is only about a 2 hour flight for me. Farmington appears to be a walk from the airport. Wonder if there is fishing near by? Would either be a good place for a RON?

What is required for a good place for a fly-in? I haven't been to Farmington or either of the two airports in Durango. I have driven to Durango and took the Durango Silverton train (recommended). Durango has some decent restaurants, but a bit pricey. Amy and I have flown to Pagosa Springs (PSO). The FBO's curtosy car was out so they drove us to town and picked us up. PSO is at 7664 ft and surrounded by mountains. Not for someone who hasn't had some mountain flying experience. We have flown to Gallup (GUP) and Grants (GNT) New Mexico. GUP has a restaurant within walking distance. GNT is a rustic airport with an airport manager usually there to greet you during your radio call and when you get to the tiny terminal. Two restaurants within driving distance. Wow diner and Kiva Cafe.

I also have driven to Durango but have not flown into either of the two airport. I can definately recommend the Durango-Silverton train ride! DRO gets great comments on the AOPA website and their AVgas is a little cheeper than FMN but either would be good. Pagosa Springs and Gallup both sound good as well.

What is required for a good place for a fly-in? .......

The key is that nothing is required for a member to sponsor/hold a fly-in! Sure, a handy, neat place to eat is an added attraction but it isn't necessary. Something nice to see or do certainly would add to the attraction but again, it isn't necessary.

What is necessary is a place to land planes and that is about it! Just getting together with fellow members is good enough in my book. All the other stuff is gravy!

Select a place, a date and then let your regional director know. Get the event on the BAC calendar and you are all done except the flying! It's that easy!!!!!

So now that Big Bird has a new fuel selector we can think about flying somewhere for a fly in. The Imperial valve allowed fuel to flow from the left tank to the right tank while the valve was in the off position. The extra fuel came out the right tank overflow and on to the ground. We lost 15-20 gallons and confidence that the fuel selector will not fail with more dire results. We now have new AEC valve in and it works quite nicely.

Anyone in the South West have any ideas for dates and locations for a fly in? The fire in the Gila is not making for blue skies and great visibility at the moment.

I have been to Farmington a few times. Can be a bit of a challenge on a windy day. It sits on top of a Mesa and there are drop offs at the approach end of the runways. I do not recall any place to eat on the field. One visit we got a crew car to drive elsewhere for food.
