Camarillo Fly-in - 2 March, 2013

Headed to Andromeda
I'd like to host a fly-in to Camarillo (KCMA) on the 2nd of March. This is a towered airport with a CAF museum on the field. I think I can get us a group discount and maybe they will allow us to park on their ramp. I have ate at the restaurant and it is very good. Saturdays could be very crowded, so I'll call to see if we might be able to reserve some space. Typically the weather is good, I believe I was in short sleeves my last visit in early March of last year. So all of you that can make it, let me know so I can start laying the ground work for this fly-in.

I don't know, they never told me they are having a sale.

OK, just checked their website. Nothing is shown in the "fly-ins / event" link that indicate there is a sale. I couldn't find any thing on the website of an impending "on site" sale.

Sounds like a great location and event, Marty, but it is a little too far for a weekend get-away for us. Hope the CA members will turn-out, they are long overdue for a good showing!

I have heard good things about that restaurant and I will be there weather permitting! (A friend of mine's husband is the Airport Manager there, if we need anything special, I have a contact info.)

Well, that's four of us. I'll have to make reservations at the restaurant if more decide to come. Mark G is threatening, but you know how that goes. Maybe I'll stop by and pick up Candy to give him a reason to show up.

Hey Marty,

We are planning on coming. Might be a "drive-in or a train-in" for us, but planning on making it at this point. My mom will be visiting from MN so we might even drag her along too. Counting the days already............

Take care,
Candy

Candy,

It will be good to see you there. Bring Momma too, the more the merrier! I'd better get to that restaurant reservation.

Marty I was planning to attend until I discovered the date of a friends wedding is the same date. I tried to persuade my wife to represent us but, no joy. Sorry.

I have an update on the fly-in:

The arrival time is 10:00 am for the CAF museum tour.

The Waypoint Cafe does not take reservations. It is known to be crowded on the weekends and an one hour wait for a table is not uncommon. They suggested to show up later in the afternoon. So, it may be best to try for 1:00 pm vs 12:00. Even then, we may not all be able to get at the same table. But a free lunch is worth the wait!

The CAF museum is giving us a group rate of $5.00/person for the museum tour. They have graciously allowed us to park on their ramp. Hopefully I'll be there early enough to assist in marshaling the arriving airplanes (look for the skinny dude with the tan BAC ball cap).

So far, it appears there will be 8 mouses on the ramp. So, this seems to be a fairly good turn out. It will be great to renew old acquaintances and meet more of the Southwest members.

For those really interested in old military airplanes, the only flying B-29 will be in Camarillo the 18th - 20th of March. That is a Monday through Wednesday. They are on a tour of the Southwest with other CAF airplanes. Here is the link to see when they are in a town near you:

Camarillo fly-in Saturday

We just bought Beech's like-new 1970 Sierra demonstrator (serial #MC-2). Based at KWHP. Will try to join you at KCMA for lunch Saturday. Look for the green and white beauty N7688R.

Ben Moses and Gary Leemaster

Ben and Gary,

Welcome! it will be great to see the first Sierra! OK, the Musketeer R.

Congratulations on the new(to you) quality Beech product, Ben and Gary! You will have a lot of fun with the BAC group.

Mike

Camarillo is scheduled for tomorrow. The weather will be partly sunny and 80 degs F! Should be nice. I'm even going to get some light tail winds. The CAF museum are ready to park us on their ramp and will be providing us a $5/per person group discount. Afterwards, we head to the cafe for lunch (short walk from the museum).

There is plenty of space should you decide to fly over on the spur of the moment. We have 10 airplanes committed to show up, should be a good time.

We're discussing replacing Madras tips on our Sierra with the more-like-original Hoerner tips. Any comments? We're not sure what the Madras tips do for the plane except lower the gross weight. I owned the plane back in the 90s and thought the handling was great.

We'd like to discuss this with everyone coming to the CMA lunch tomorrow. Gary and I will be there in N7688R (green/white) by around 12:30 or so. Look us up.

Ben

For the Sierra, I can't see the drooped wing tip. Yes, they do improve slow speed handling. But, how much time does a Sierra (or Musketeer R) spend in slow flight? It's just not that type of airplane. It's the "pick up the gear and go somewhere" type of airplane. You could go into rough short strips with a Sierra. The landing/takeoff numbers are very similar to the C-182. I've done in once, but the dings in the prop blades reduced the number of re-profiles left on the prop by one. I now only have one re-profile left on the blades before I have to pop for new ones. It's just not the type of airplane for the short and unimproved fields. If you want that, then you chose the wrong airplane to buy. The Sierra handles just fine at the slow end of the flight envelope. Predictable and stable. VGs offer a better balance between low speed handling and stability than paying the price for the Madras tips in pounds lost in the cabin. If you like, I'll give you a set of original wing tips. They aren't perfect, but could be fixed to look nearly new cheaply. They just need to be beat to fit and painted to match. I'll bring them to KCMA tomorrow.

I just replaced the Madras Tips with stock style tips on my B24 Sierra, mainly to improve cruise speed, and regain lost take off weight. The only differences i have seen so far, is less stable slow flight. I do not think I am cruising any faster.... I will be at CMA tomorrow, I really want to see how the "C" series rear seats attach! (I want to replace my rear bench seats with separate seats.

Keep in mind you can recover some of the slow speed handling improvements with a Micro VG kit - these are STCed for all of our single engine mice. BTW - we'll be up around 11 maybe - early start delayed by having to deal with mechanical issues on the ground transport (rear diff, at least one of the pinion bearings, hopefully no gear work needed but there was metal in the fluid :-( ).
