The Museum of Flight is located on West Marginal Way at Boeing Field in Seattle. Boeing is a sponsor but otherwise is not afilliated with the museum.
The Boeing factory in Everett (25 miles north of Seattle) has a a display and daily factory tours. None of the other Boeing facilities are open to the public.
Another suggestion for a quick side trip from Portland is Mt St. Helens Volcano visitors' center. It's less then 40 miles and really impressive.

Robin & I plan to be there, but I can't commit to how many days we can stay yet. Her work schedule is still the nail that keeps us stuck in place.

Driving would make a great vacation trip, but flying the Sundowner would be the most exciting. I've been looking at routes and it looks like generally following Interstate 90 would be a possible route. Some of you mountain flyers chime in!!!

Flight Levels
Start west-bound out of Billings by 7AM, smooth. Wait until afternoon you might get Mtn wave which can be exciting. It'll be fire season by then so be sure you have a good TFR plan. Northern ID and the Cascades are very rough, I-90 is a good plan although I now fly direct anywhere out here.
I usually avoid 6000' elev airports in the afternoon due to DA climb concerns. I like to cruise 11,500 east bound and 10,500 west bound, I feel this gives me more options in a single.
ATC services are usually available above 10K. ADS-B is not yet available from Billings until near Spokane. After Spokane you good.
I also fly with a good survival pack, 406 ELT and PLB.

Flying across following I-80 until you get to the Salt Lake Basin then northwest along I-84 to Portland is a good route too. But as noted above, it'll be close to peak fire season and the TFR's for fire fighting can pop up anywhere, at any time. Be sure to check the TFR's before each flight and at each fuel stop. And the advise about flying early in the day is true too for the mountains. Particularly on hot sunny days.

Just a quick update and a picture. Found out that the museum at Pearson is no longer open, the upside is I found out that we may have a chance to see it anyway. Also, finding out about tower tours at PDX. This event will be awesome, please let me know if you are coming.

Here's some concerning news about Evergreen Aviation Museum near portland reported today: [h=1]P-38 Lightning At Evergreen Museum Up For Sale[/h][h=2]One Of Only Seven Airworthy Examples Of The Airplane Known To Exist[/h]Under a cloud of bankruptcy, airplanes at the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, OR are being sold one-by-one. So far, a Ford Trimotor that flew the first transcontinental passenger route between New York and San Diego has been sold, and now, a 1945 P-38L Lightning airplane has been placed on the block with a price tag of $6.75 million.
Oregonlive.com reports that the Trimotor went to an undisclosed buyer two weeks ago. The asking price was $1.75 million, but the actual sales price was not revealed. Nor was the creditor who will receive the money.
The P-38 is being listed by Platinum Fighter Sales of Redondo Beach, CA. Broker Simon Brown said it is a "shame" that the airplanes have to be sold, and that the company has already had several inquiries about the aircraft. Brown said the Lightning is one of only seven in airworthy condition known to exist, and "it'll go sooner rather than later."
One of the museum's signature pieces, the famed Spruce Goose, will likely not be sold, according to Robert Lyon, an attorney representing the Aero Club of Southern California which holds title to the massive flying boat. Thanks for the update on Evergreen's situation, I do not think they will be going "out-of-business" soon, it is unfortunate however that they have to sell their P-38 and Ford Trimotor. As for repossessing the Spruce Goose, that would be an interesting effort considering the building was designed around the proportions of the enormous plane, I do hope they settle-up soon on that though. There are plenty of notable aircraft at the museum: Beech Starship, SR-71, B-17, Me-109, Me-262, Spitfire, Beech 35, many more:

Hope everyone is doing well, managing to break out of this harsh Winter's cold clutch and take to the air! I have been busy putting together some updated plans and an itinerary for our 2014 BACFest. Something important to note, I have moved the fly-in to Pearson Airfield in Washington, right across the river from PDX. This is the oldest operating airport in the United States and it happens to be surrounded by a national historic site, Fort Vancouver and our fly-in will be held right in the midst of it. There will be plenty of things to do while you are here, for pilots, spouses, kids; the whole family, from education, historic sites, airplanes, shopping, dining, wineries, breweries, airplanes, it's gonna be a blast!
Note, the registration fee is not finalized, but it will be inline with past BACFests. This is why it is so important to pre-register VERY SOON and let us know you will be attending. For those planning to fly-in, it just got better, no landing or tie-down fees, enjoy the casual atmosphere of a Pacific Northwest GA airport!

Pearson Field is Class D airspace administered by Portland Tower. Initial contact when entering the Class D area should be made to "Portland Advisory". All subsequent position reports should be made to "Pearson Traffic" on the same frequency. Enter and leave the pattern from the northwest over Vancouver Lake. Departures typically stay to the west side of the lake and arrivals to the east. For noise abatement, climb straight ahead on both runways to 700 MSL; do not overfly Fort Vancouver and make all turns west of Smith Tower. Remain below 1,100 MSL until more than 5 NM from Portland VOR to avoid Class C airspace. Also, the Evergreen Museum offers reciprocal agreements with other museums. We got in free with our Seattle Museum of Flight family membership. There is a incredible indoor waterpark adjacent to the Evergreen Museum. It's a pretty cool to slide out of an actual B747.

Thanks James, yes to everything you said, and there is another 747 they added last summer out front for display. There is also a winery onsite, although I have never tried the wine there.
John, this will be another great BACFest, I have a lot of help from the aviation community around Portland and from fellow BAC members. Guarantee this will be tons of fun!
