BACFest 2013 update

Headed to Andromeda
Well.. Planning is ongoing for the Virginia Beach Sept BACFest 2013. It looks like the Blue Angels will not be in town, sequestered away. But we still have lots to do. Some Mid Atlantic Members have taken the week off to offer their "local info" to those of you flying in from afar. We have lots of flying and non flying activities planned. And I will go out on a limb here and predict great weather ,just like every September. Thw VA Dept of Aviation will be making pilot packets available for us too.
Fairly soon we should have the main meals planned out enough to post a registration fee.
Keep the requests and ideas coming!

I was looking at the thread about the water ditching recently and wondered. Would members and guests like me to try to talk to the USCG base and see if they can do a ditching program for us? We can do it as a wings credit item.

Some of the guys at 1L0 fly for the USCG auxiliary. As part of their training they have to do water egress out of an inverted cage.

Do they have that kind of facility near BAC Fest? I don't think the USCG would give "free rides" but just seeing it demonstrated or watching some of that training would be interesting.

We have 2 USCG bases nearby. I have written to both requesting a visit from us. The bigger of the two is USCG base Elizabeth City NC. This is a multiuse airport with civilian use as well as a major Search & Rescue ops base. Lots of helicopters, C130s, Falcons. This training facility pool was the one used to film the movie (Name?) About reacue swimmer training in Alaska. A while back they hosted a bunch of us for training in "How to survive an emergency water landing. This was the day that convinced me not to buy a cheap life raft. We did spend a lot of time in the pool and the rescue swimmers amazed me. I will try to work out something. Probably for wed or Thursday before BACFest. I will keep you all posted.

Just looking for aome opinions here. We are getting ready to schedule our "Welcome Dinner" and set up some registration fees. I would like to do a welcome dinner Friday won't ofwork Bacfest on the water on a large group tour boat with appropriate food and drink. I suspect that not everyone enjoys this sort ot fun. So I want some input from you before I set up these things. Still awaiting answer from USCG training facility for a Dunker Demo too.
See you in September! !

I think that's great. If you do everything normal, it will be just a normal BACFest. Think outside the box!

just an update:
I have been meeting with Jon Persinger (Mid Atlantic RD) and Alan White (nice guy in VA) and talking with Brad etc that have some BACFest planning experience. We are making progress. I am tryimg to get quotes for a welcome happy hour/ Dolphin tour boat. And it is looking like the Coast Guard will work with us setting up something. I should have a budget and registration fee proposal to the BOD soon.
This is a great time to send me ideas, requests, fly out locations etc.

I am hoping to set up an hour wings seminar during our event and I would like to see about finding enough CFIs to get BFRs done for those that want one.
The Coast Guard base is working on setting up our visit. Scheduling might require Thursday or Friday, and they actually prefer wd fly in rather than drive. Cool.
Also I have arranged for an excellent dinner speaker. Should be an interesting talk.
The Blue Angels are not coming.
I am taking requests for our maintenance clinic. Your plane or mine? Best day and topics are open.

Great work on everything Paul. Think we can get a little website tutorial in for those interested so we can possibly help members take advantage of the great database and resources. I like the dinner speaker idea with the evening before festivities. Nice meeting you in person the other day . You are going to get in trouble for accusing Alan of being a nice guy from Virginia though.

Paul, You have obviously been working very hard to make this a great event. The Coast Guard visit sounds like a real opportunity that I will not miss. Great job!

Tom,

Vibration after new tires might tell you that it might not be a shim issue. If it starts at rotation with the mains still on the ground, it's the nose tire. Either grossly out of balance or out of round. Maybe some bearing issues contributing. I'd have someone look at the NLG first, it may be an easy fix. I think Mike Rellihan had a lot of things to say about gear vibration. You might want to do a search first.
