Climbing to Cruise
Hey, I had a thought. I am a fairly new Pilot, under a year, and I am always looking for places to fly to... if there happens to be a fun restaurant at the airport, bonus! Is there anywhere on this site we could make a list of local "favorite places" with reviews? I guess it would need to be broken down by region.
For Example:
My favorite lunch fly to place is Kernville, CA (L05)
Kernville, CA http://www.fltplan.com/AirportInformation/KL05.htm
This is a fun Airport. Mostly smaller aircraft; however, the last time I was there, we watched a Kingair depart. The approach is from over Lake Isabella, Downwind is up the valley, and landing is done towards the lake. (Just in case a go-around is needed, one is climbing over the water and not trying to climb towards the mountains.) The restaurant is on the field and consists of a covered patio overlooking the airport, river and lake. The servings are enormous. My Recommendation: The Bacon Ortega Burger.
The town of Kernville is a fun little town as well. There is camping at the airport adjacent to the Kern River. There are also several Bed and Breakfasts located near by. Activities include: Fishing, kayaking/rafting, hiking, rock climbing and Mountain Biking. Several restaurants and a local brewery are also in town.
If you happen to find yourself passing thru the North end of the San Joaquin Valley and over Bakersfield around lunch time, Kernville is about 20 Minutes due east (by air.) See you there!
