Matt,
Welcome to BAC.
You are too new a member to be around for "Musketeers Do Not Float".
The story may still be in the archives on this website.

Allan,

A couple of years ago I had to do a "very light" touch-and-go as there was open water on each side of the well marked runway. Only a Citabria was parked on the ice.

Reports from local volunteers on conditions of the ice are accurate and updated regularly. There is no need for guessing. If the ice will hold the plow trucks it will hold a Musketeer or Sundowner. As the ice forms the recorded telephone line is opened to pilots.

Why not post the photo of your plane on the ice for the benefit of the new guys.

Hey Tom! Not to be too obstreperous but.... You say everyone wants an ice landing in their logbook. Honestly, I love New Hampshire and New England in general, but I have never felt any desire to land on ice. Could you refresh us on how much fun this is? And why you enjoy it? Thanks!
Your interpreter, Paul

Paul,

For those of us who fly closer to the edge of the envelope, the thrill of landing on ice or a very short runway is appealing. Done with care, the 2,500' on Lake Winnipesauke is easily done. The taxiing is not. However, the personal reward of the accomplishment rules this endeavor.

Note: My flights to the edge have not always worked out perfectly. Neither have my recent investments in the New York Stock Exchange.

Report this morning (Friday January 29, 2016) from Ron Cribbie the Airboss of New Hampshire...
his response to the question: Is Lake Winnipsauke frozen yet?

I flew it a couple of hours ago. The lake is about 70% frozen. So would say not even close to being safe yet.

Ron Cribbie, Airboss of New Hampshire, sends us this photo of a bobhouse ice fishing shelter. It was taken January 30, 2016 on Lake Winnipesauke. He says the bobhouse is surrounded by water. This is not good for landing on the ice runway. Our fly-in is scheduled for February 13th on the lake. An FAA employee confirmed yesterday that the runway is not yet ready for use.

Stay tuned.

The weather in New Hampshire is forecast for ABOVE freezing temperatures for the next week.

We usually set the date of the Ice Runway Fly-In to coincide with the state ice fishing tournament in New Hampshire. I am told that that has been pushed to the end of February hoping for ice. We may do the same.

However, we will have an alternate. More soon.

. The volunteers who plow and maintain the ice runway at Alton Bay, New Hampshire have announced that the runway
will not be open this season.
It has not been cold enough and it is too iffy even for the pickup trucks that do the plowing.

THINK 2017.

Look for a breakfast fly-in in March to an airport is western Massachusetts.
