BACFest 2015 Venue Search

Nooooooooooooooo - not Branson and the Conway Twitty Hall of Fame !??!? ROFL.. JP - help me out here - please...
;)

Just a little side joke from BACFest Ithaca - no offense intended...
:)

It's kind of like mentioning the Susquehanna Hat Company to Abbott and Costello...

That was also the destination of Carlos's ill fated inverted flight in his Sierra...

Yes - - - Texas!

But let's not pick a July or August date .... (I am heading to the cabin in Colorado soon - - it's hot!)

OK - - here is an idea I will float to the team:

Base of event in Fredericksburg, Texas at the airport. This is a most excellent facility and shopping in town is legendary (hold on to your credit cards, my friends):

One day trip could be to my airport ( 8 T 8 ) on the west side of San Antonio where we might cart the group over to see Lewis's WW II collection in his two hangars at the SAT airport. For those unaware, he has Glacier Girl, a gorgeous P-40, and .... well ... about 20 other aircraft you and I dream about. And at my home airport, we could drop in on one of our monthly EAA Chapter 35 meetings.

Of course, there is always the River Walk downtown ... and the Alamo.

So I will float the idea while being totally ignorant on how much time and effort it takes to launch the event.

I am going to volunteer to host the event at Dubuque, Iowa. Dubuque is a historic river town on the Mississippi River with a new convention center boarding the river, including a river walk, museum, and many resturants in walking distance of the motel. The upper Mississippi is very scenic at that point with high bluffs and clear creeks feeding into it with trout in them. We could arrange for a river boat cruise and a fly-out to an island airstrip with lunch. The airport is class D with a large ramp that is currently hosting almost 40 AT-6's and p-51's preparing for a mass fly-in to Oshkosh. There also is a maintenance facility that would accommodate a clinic. Fuel is currently $5.30 off the truck and less than that at a self serve pump. It is just the right size, not so big that prices are high, but big enough to have the needed facilities. There is commercial service to the airport by regional jet.
My hat is in the ring for consideration, Denis.

I did some research on activities for Dubuque. I contacted Elliot Beechcraft that has a rebuild shop in Moline, IL. They do complete rebuilds including paint and interior and would give us a tour. On Thursday we could make the 20 minute flight down the river (scenic, but don't fly below the bluffs, wires cross the river) to Moline, tour the rebuild shop, fly back and land on the island at Guttenburg for lunch, then return to KDBQ. The paddle wheel river boat can be chartered and they will serve a buffet dinner, a good possibility for Friday night. I will keep doing research to give the BOD information for their decision.

Anyone interested in this years BACfest ?Send me a email with how many and I can send the pay pal invoice to you. Mike, thanks for getting the conversation going for next years. Last year the decision was made the morning of Bacfest with a new Northwest director volunteering over a speaker phone at 6 am Saturday morning Pacific time. Thank you Jon Krane for accepting the responsibility and the work you are doing on it. The above ideas and suggestions are awesome for next year. If you are interested in hosting next years ,please contact your regional director, Rap, Bob S or myself. Denis, I sent your pay pal invoice for Portland out this morning. Thanks everyone for the input.

As a native son, this is idea I can get behind, although a visit to the Alamo is over-rated. It's been about 40 years since I steered a paddle boat down the San Antonio River. Do they even still do that? There are also really cool caverns north of town that are worth a visit, especially if it is hot outside. Did anyone mention the food? Tex-Mex at it's finest.

Plus, I'll be able to add a bunch of states to my map.

We did Texas just a few years ago. River walk etc. I know this is not a vote but a selection commitee choice. I would rather see a new place. While I never considered Iowa a special destination, I support Denis's suggestion.

I would like to volunteer to help Denis Weiser host BAC Fest 2015 in Dubuque, IA. We also have 2 others owners in our Super III N3630Q that are also willing to donate there time to help with the event. My family and I attended BAC Fest last year with my parents (Denis & Kathryn) and had a great time. We currently live in Dubuque and didn't have an idea for what the Mississippi really is until we moved here. There is plenty to do in DBQ. Everything from local shops, the river walk, hiking, river boat tours, museums, and great local restaurants. Hope you vote DBQ.

The Iowa guys have stepped up to the plate. Having up to 4 people volunteer to host a fly-in is nice. I was looking at the town on google it looks big enough to have a few nice hotels to choose from. Works for me.

Sorry guys, I was on vacation from July 1 till Aug 1. Then back for my wife's surgery on the 5th. I will vol for Cleveland. Things to do in sept in the area Rock n roll HOF, Pro Football HOF, the hard rock casino, West side Market, cleveland Zoo, Tower City & Crocker Park (shopping for the women). I personally would offer CAK (Akron canton airport) as the site. It is about 40 minutes from Cleveland. Plenty to do and see. There is a aviation museum on the field, the MAPS museum. Put-in-Bay is less than a 45-50 minute flight and easy to get to. My uncle is an A&P at CAK so if someone need their plane looked at, I can talk him into doing it for free.99. My parts stash would be with-in a 10 minute flight or 30 minute drive. I might be able to work something out with the air guard to see about getting a ride in a C-130 (not a guarantee but would give it a BAC effort). Sept is also a great time to perch fish in Lake Erie.

And the Best of all you would be in OH-----IO enough said.

Nothing against Erick or Cleveland but I would give the nod to someone who has attended BACFest before and experienced it.

no offense taken. I was just throwing out there what cleveland had to offer. I thought I saw earlier in this post where it said "if a new member steps up there would be plenty of help."

Erick, you forgot to mention Johnny Football.

Has anyone ever thought about changing the dates. Having it the same month every year might limit those that can attend. Just a thought.

I am one of the four owners of N3630Q in Dubuque, IA. I grew up around the Dubuque area and know people would enjoy seeing the beautiful scenery this town has to offer. There are several other options in the surrounding area that people could visit including the Field of Dreams movie sight, Maquoketa Caves State Park, and historic Galena, IL area.

Erick, I don't know that the date/month are locked in but I'll give you some history. First I see from your profile that you're a high school teacher so I can see that September or October could be problematic for you.

As I recall the very first BAC Fest was held in Wichita, in July I think. It was hosted by Dave Buttram who had a school age daughter. It was HOT. After that there was discussion that most members were old farts who didn't have kids in school. BAC Fest was moved to the fall to avoid the heat and thunderstorms of the summer but before our northern brethren put their birds away for the winter.

i don't think dates are carved in stone. I think a volunteer host could propose his/her preferred date to the Board.

The date is not carved in stone, and we have moved BACFest a bit earlier over the years. Cloyd is right that we are mostly old farts with grown children. The BAC tenth anniversary was held during the summer and I don't recall seeing any school-age children there.

Some reasons we have picked the September time frame is that the weather is still nice, we miss the crowds and hotel rooms are usually less expensive and more available after Labor Day.
