Idea for a large fly-in

Flight Levels
Aug. 21 is approaching while St. Louis is very close to the total eclipse center it will not be total. I was just looking at the map to find airports along the path I could fly to in case of clouds on the day of the eclipse. I think if there are interested, like-minded people, we can pick out several airports to meet at as groups all over the country. Just a idea, maybe I am the only one whom cares.

I'll be in Casper, Wyoming, but I'll be taking a commercial flight there. Biggest city the eclipse goes directly over (and I lived there for a couple of years back in the early 80's...)

I am looking for a spot for the eclipse as well. Tennessee? Might like to fly under it to make it last a bit longer. Good airport?

Here is a link http://www.eclipse2017.org/2017/path_through_the_US.htm
i was thinking of smaller airports near cities. I am looking between nw Missouri, down to maybe Nashville depending on interest and cloud cover expected. The eclipse starts up near Portland I guess and travels all the way off the east coast in South Carolina so I would hope different regions would plan their own

I floated the idea of a Casper fly in around my airport and got zilch interest. It is only a 2 hour flight (we have to go around the 14k mountains so not direct) in my plane but all the hotels rooms in Casper were apparently booked in 2015 by those who saw this eclipse coming. Poitras you must be staying with family, have connections or knew to book a room years ago.

After being told several times "what if Casper is under a cloud layer?" I decided to go to Casper, but not fly. We will be driving in the 85 Westy van. It's pretty good at getting places.

It takes way more than 2 hours driving, but I figure we don't need a hotel room and if Casper is covered by a cloud layer we can drive west, east or wherever to get out from under the clouds and see the eclipse.

Anyone going to be in Casper let me know and we can join up!

Michael,

Karen and I are considering taking the Motorhome to Casper for this event. Checked the KOA and it is booked but there are lots of other places we can park. Not as maneuverable as the Westy but I am sure we can find a place. Lets plan on meeting up.

The Colorado Pilots Association is having a fly-in to Car Henge at Alliance, NE for this event. I probably won't make it there as I have a number of grand kids I would like to take north to see it. Steve has a great idea thought and I think it would be great if we had a number of locations across the country that members could meet to watch the eclipse.

as someone who doesn't have a plane to fly right now.... Paducah, KY (KPAH) may be a fun spot. Nice riverfront town with a historic downtown and a nice airport.

I looked at Paducah as a possibility. Not too far off the eclipse centerline, especially if we got a rental van to get closer.. I checked hotel rooms - EXPENSIVE if available at all.

Michael,

I might put Casper on my list - - - it looks within reason and I will let you know. It would be excellent to join-up. That is a great photo. I assume you have a Syncro (?)

I will bring the van (but not the boat!). We used to have a 1969 VW Westy, but it caught fire and was totaled. We still have a 1957 Westfalia trailer - - so many toys.

If we are going into the mountains, let me know and I will pull the Haflinger behind me. It climbs like a goat.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones that doesn't have to fly anywhere! My home airport/airpark K7S5 in Oregon is right on the path of totality. Our city and airport has lot's of activities planned for that weekend including concerts, fireworks and even the Van's RV fly-in. http://independencegoesdark.com/
If you are anywhere in the Portland or Salem area drop in. Camping on site. It should be a really fun weekend.

Oh I don't have to fly anywhere. St Louis is a destination city for the eclipse and i could easily drive to the centerline. I was more worried about clouds and figured i could expand my viewing opportunity by 4 0r 5 hundred miles if i use my plane. Besides it would be fun.

Can you log night flight for the duration of the eclipse?

Best eclipse story ever: "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" by Mark Twain.

There are no hard and fast rules. We did something similar a couple of years back when it was "Fly Your Plane Day." We could post it as a fly-in and each individual would be responsible for reporting their PT Points. Seems like there's a lot of interest so I'll post it.

Bob,

It's a Steyr Puch Haflinger. Same company made the 4x4 system for the VW Synchro. Has a 12 inch ground clearance, dif lock both front and rear if needed to use while driving. Built for Austrian army in 60's and 70's. Road legal. Probably only about 100 operating in the USA. I have 3 (of course).

The last 30 seconds is a good indicator of the vehicle's capabilities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGv6KprygHA

Major thread creep, but all in good fun!
