Wings To Wichita June 18th, Stearman Field 1K1

Around The Moon
Join us for lunch and more on June 18th for the annual fly-in at Lloyd Stearman Field just northwest of Wichita, KS. Don Olson of Wichita is our host. Plan to arrive by about 11 a.m. and we will have lunch at the Stearman Field Bar and Grill (http://www.stearmanbarandgrill.com/). There is a car show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don has access to a 15 passenger van so after lunch about 1 p.m. we will leave for a tour of the Kansas Air Museum (http://kansasaviationmuseum.org/). Plan for at least two hours to see most of the museum. Don will bus us back to Stearman field afterwards. Some of you may want to head home at this time. For those who want to stay we will have a barbeque at Don's hangar on field. Entertainment starts at 8 p.m. in the evening with The Fabulous Shirtheads (http://thefabulousshirtheads.com/). Known for onstage comedy and antics, along with a solid, danceable play list, the Band appeals to a diverse audience. Don will take us to a reasonably priced hotel that evening and back to Stearman Field in the morning for our departure. Please let us know you are coming so we can plan accordingly. This should be a really fun day for all and the more of you come the better it will be. See you there!

Thanks for the reminder Alan. Got 'er done. I might add that if anyone has any questions they may contact Don Olson at 315-201-8550 or myself at 308-345-1755 evenings.

This fly-in is now a month away and I know some of you, like me, find it hard to plan a long ways out so now is the time to save this date. This is likely to be an outstanding fly-in you won't want to miss. Don Olson is waiting to find out if we receive permission to fly from 1K1 to McConnell Air Force Base where the museum is located. We are optimistic that this will be approved, but have not received the final word. There also is a possibility that we may get a glimpse of "Doc", the B-29 that is under restoration at McConnell. We want to see you there June 18th!

This fly-in is three weeks away and is going to be fun for all. It has been two years since the BACTac event which celebrated our club's 10th anniversary in June of 2014. We're not going to forget so we'll celebrate our 12th anniversary at Wings To Wichita on June 18th. We're still waiting on word as to whether or not the Air Force will give us permission to land at McConnell Air Force Base, but our sources remain very optimistic. Come, have a great lunch, tour the Kansas Air Museum, a hangar barbque and top it off with entertainment in the evening. It doesn't get any better than that. By the way, we are having an incredibly active storm pattern in the Midwest so let me know you would like to come so we can plan regardless of how things look now.
We will hope for less active whether by the middle of June, so don't hold off committing as the weather call on this one will likely be one or two days before the event. (Last night our tornado sirens went off four times in my town. Don't remember that ever happening in one evening. Thankfully no tornado though.)

We have had a request for a "prefly-in to this event due to Father's Day falling on Sunday. Here's the suggestion. Fly in Friday morning and Don will pick you up so you can tour the Kansas Aviation Museum after lunch. (You are on your own for lunch.) Stay overnight and have lunch with us on Saturday. You can fly home after that so you can enjoy Father's Day with your families on Sunday. Any takers out there?

Don has found a very good hotel at very good rate. For those of you who will be flying in and staying overnight, we will be staying at the Wichita Hampton INN NE (northeast). The cost is $89 per night plus taxes. For reservations, call them directly at 316-636-5594. This is not a group discount so you will not need to give them the BAC name. If you book with the hotel directly, there is free cancellation up until 4:00 p.m. on the day of the reservation. If you come in a day early, the hotel is 1.6 miles from the Colonel Jabara airport (KAAO). You could land there the night before and then fly the few miles to 1K1 Stearman Field the next morning. The hotel does not have a shuttle to pick you up however, You will need to arrange ground transportation with Don. Once again, his cell phone is 316-201-8550. We are still awaiting word on permission to fly directly to McConnell Air Force Base. We will let you know as soon as we can.

This fly-in is in two weeks from today. The stormy weather in the Midwest has settled down thanks to high pressure in the western USA. This should be a great weekend for a fly-in.

We are one week away from this fun and interesting fly-in. I 'd like to encourage everyone to consider making Stearman Field their destination next Saturday. For those who have been wanting to know, we have not received permission to fly to McCoonnell Air Force Base to visit the Kansas Air Museum. We should not have negative feelings about this after all, they are a military base. Not only that, the B-29 Doc has asked for permission to use their runways to make its first flight and they have not received permission either. We could still gat permission, but for now, will plan on driving to the museum.

It's five days to go until this fly-in and the weather looks warm but good for the weekend in the Midwest. I am pleased to announce we have two sponsors for this fly-in. Mike Hattrup of Wilco Aircraft Parts in Wichita will treat those attending to pizza for lunch. In addition, Kenny Oliver of Global Aircraft Parts in Wichita will pick up the tab for everyone to attend the Kansas Air Museum. We want to thank both of these companies for their support and generosity. This is one more reason to attend Wings to Wichita and our 12th anniversary BAC fly-in. See you there!

Forecast looks good here. I am planning on coming. Will probably stay Saturday night and fly back to CO on Sunday. How far is the hotel from 1K1?

The Hampton Inn & Suites, NE is closer to Colonel Jabara Airport (KAAO) which, as the crow flies, the two airports are 5.4 NM apart. Don Olson has access to a 15 passenger van so he is very willing to shuttle us between 1K1 and the hotel. It is an 11 mile, 14 minute trip from 1K1 to the hotel. Linda and I are planning the same thing...flying in Saturday morning and home on Sunday. It is great to hear you are coming.

So far we have the following who have said they are coming:
Kenny Oliver
Mike & Linda Nielsen
Don & Mrs. Olson (Sorry about that. I forget names.)
Mike & Mrs. Dunlevie
Dave Stevens
Steve Powers upgraded now to a maybe depending on work schedule

I was hopeful that we could get to see Doc's first flight since it is ready. Their application to fly at McConnell AFB went to the Pentagon at the same time ours did. Ours was never approved. I recently read that the Doc was still not approved for using their runways by the Air Force. Logically the Pentagon will have to approve it sometime. Maybe Don could check and see if we can at least get into the hangar to see it.

Well move me from maybe to weather dependent plus one gf wants to come also. Work officially cancelled mandatory ot today.

Great to hear that Steve. We will welcome your guest. I think I saw a picture of her when you went to an Indiana fly-in recently. I should mention to everyone that I understated the weather. I said it would be warm. Hot is more like it. Temps through the weekend are supposed to be just under 100 so everyone will need to be prepared. Maybe we should bring our water guns so we could keep each other wet. LOL!

Don Olson talked to the chairman of the Doc restoration committee. They have not got permission to fly yet from the Air Force even though it is ready. I thought we could get in to see it, but they could let a couple of us with security clearances in. They couldn't let all of us so that is not going to be possible. I have another idea of something we could do that would be a bonus, but will wait on that until tomorrow.
Here is a list of who I know is coming:
Kenny Oliver
Mike & Linda Nielsen
Don & Mrs. Olson
Dave Stevens
Steve Powers & Guest
If anyone else would like to come, we would welcome you if you wanted to just show up.
