Western NC Fly Camp Hike and Fish (KAVL) May 20th - 23rd

I figure Friday we'll get everybody to camp, get camp setup, grab some grub and go over the map to plan Saturday's activities.

Don,

Yes, I still plan to attend.
- tent camping and chair for fireside
- folding bike for exploring (anyone else up for a spin?), and group hikes of course
- reserved minivan during my stay, so I can assist with any logistics as needed

Getting excited!

Don,

The camping / activities / logistics appear to be falling in place. Great! All looking good and thanks for getting a group campsite. Let's hope for decent weather.

I have reviewed the (rather numerous) postings on this thread and am concerned about the lack of info about the airport. Possibly you have some information to share, but the KAVL airnav site references some steep airplane ramp fees ($30 per day) that we should be able to avoid (?). Looks like a great place to arrive with full tanks as well ...... Such is the signature of Landmark / Signature.

Please let me have your aircraft logistics suggestions. I certainly do not mind parking in the weeds if needed with stakes and tie-downs to avoid some hefty parking fees.

In addition, I have that minivan reserved from May 20 to May 23 - - and happy to transport / shuttle others as needed.

I talked to them last month but didn't have the actual count of who was coming. He told me to call back a month before arrival with actual numbers but acted like he will work with us. They was more than willing to work with us when I was testing the waters for BACFest but that is like 30 aircraft. I'll call them next week and see what he has to say right now we have 4 planes confirmed.

I'll bring my folding bike as well!

Who ever said the bike has to fit though the baggage door?

By the way the self serve fuel is $4.51, still waiting on the GM to get back with me.

I contacted Signature again trying to get in touch with the GM. He is out of town this week so should hear something back next week. Hopefully he'll email me back soon.

If this falls through, Hendersonville (0A7) will be our alternant. It will add about 25 minutes to our travel to the North Mills recreation area. The tie down is $10 a night and they may have some covered space available for the same price, fuel is $4.50 a gallon. They said they should have no problem accommodating us.

If we have to divert to Hendersonville getting rental cars may be an issue but I can always shuttle whoever to pickup their car.

Donald,

Thanks for the follow-up. I will plan to hang on to my minivan reservation, which means I will initially need a shuttle ride if we head to Hendersonville. Then I will be available to help you with some driving duties/grocery runs if needed. It's all good ....

Oh .... if it's gonna be cold and rainy, you will find my minivan parked at a nearby hotel!

Nothing like rain falling on a tent to make for a wonderful nights sleep! (As long as you keep dry!)

Chuck at Signature emailed me he's seeing if he can get the facilities charge dropped. He has offer $.75 off the full serve fuel and $7 a night tie down but the facilities charge is a daily charge on top of that, so waiting on his reply. I'll get the total costs to y'all as soon as I hear from him. Ultimately I will leave it to you all being you are paying for it but we need to all go to the same airport. Chuck is supposed to get me some price points also that are based on the number of aircraft, more planes lower prices. Looking ahead to a Builtmore fly-in.

Alright guys Chuck confirmed no facilities fee for each plane that buys at least 7 gallons of fuel, full service or self serve, $7 per night tie down fee. Around $4.50 a gallon self serve and $.75 off full serve price. This is cheaper than Hendersonville and closer to the campground.

Let me know what y'all think so I can confirm.

I'm up for hiking also. Would have loved to hike a little of the AT - never been on it, but looks like plenty of trails close by. I've got plenty of camping gear I can bring also, assuming there is room in John Redmon's Sierra. Current plan is for me to fly to John's airport and take his Sierra to KAVL.

Bob what's the tail number on John's Sierra? I couldn't find it.

Donald,

I am good to go with the 7 gal minimum and $7 per night for airplane parking at Signature. Approximately a $32 hit for secure airplane parking during the event sounds reasonable. Thanks for all of your efforts.

For you and the others (from your smiling extra shuttle driver) - - my minivan rental is at Alamo. I will update here with planned arrival time and date when the forecast lets me know when to fly. Empty seats, room for stuff, and might be my camper if really rainy and wet :D

Don,

I just heard from John that he can't get off to make the trip, which makes me 50-50 on attending. I'm trying to get someone to go along and share expenses, bu no luck so far. If spending a few days, or even day trips, on the AT happens, I might even drive. I have a grand daughter graduating high school the following week and I'm not allowed to miss that, so I need to make sure I can get back. I'll let you know more as soon as I know more.

Thanks for the heads up Bob, hopefully it will work out.
