Western NC Fly Camp Hike and Fish (KAVL) May 20th - 23rd

I'm planning on it. Probably no fishing, but camping, hiking and visiting with other BACers sound great! I love airplane camping!

It doesn't sound like many are curently interested in fishing. This warm weather we are having has produced some awesome fishing reports in Western NC. I keep receiving emails from a few fly fishing buddies out that way, gloating about how excellent the fishing has been.

What's the situation for obtaining an out-of-state fishing license for this area? Is one needed? If so, how much, etc...

Fly in to Asheville Regional (KAVL) on Friday May 20th depart on Monday May 23rd. with shuttle form the airport to the North Mills Camp ground for a three days of camping, hiking, biking and fishing.

Rustic camping (at least what parks service calls rustic) there is running water and a bathhouse, no power, plenty of hiking and biking trails but most of all the North Mills River (just a large creek), one of the best Delayed Harvest trout waters in this area of NC. I'm looking at the group camping area but if we don't get enough responses early it may be reserved before we call.

Fishing
I've talk to Hunter Banks Outfitters http://www.hunterbanks.com/ . For people who would like to learn how to fly fish, might not have fly fishing gear, or know how to fly fish but want to hone their skills, they will provide guides and gear at $117 a person for half day or $150 a person for a whole day. Pricey I know but guides and gear are not cheep. these waters are catch and release this time of year so no eating fresh trout after a long day of fishing. I do have enough gear for three people minus waders and don't have a problem teaching people to cast a fly. When you start out it is almost as aggravating as golf. Anyone interested in fishing must get their 3 day "out of state fishing license" $45 and make sure you get trout included. I suggest you buy them online and print them out.

Hiking/Biking
Pisgah National Forest is littered with hiking and biking trails. Many of them come right through this park.

This fly in is not as much a plane oriented fly in as it is a "use our aircraft to bring us together in nature" sort of thing. I know there are a lot who have no desire to "Rough It" (if that is what one would call this so called rustic camping) and that's fine this is not for you. For the slightly more adventurous of us I guess. There are amenities close to the camp ground like restaurants and grocery stores.

Average temp rain fall in the area.

I'm trying not to make this a jammed pack event, more of a relaxed leisurely congregation of BACers if you will.

I know this is early but I need to get some preliminary counts on this if anyone is interested so I can reserve the campsite.

Heads up this is the weekend between Mothers Day and Memorial Day.

Just to Bump this info up. Alan $45 3 day out of state see website above if anyone is interested.

Looking like I will be attending this one. I will pack the bike if another person plans to bring their's as well. Not much on fishing, but enjoy camping and exploring. Hoping for great weather.

I've got a fold up bike I can bring. I might be able to get my hybrid in as well

I like the National Geographic Trails Illustrated TOPO Maps. So if anyone is interested in buying one for yourself the North Mills Camp Ground is on the north side of Pisgah Ranger District map #780. If not I'll have mine handy when we get there.

Is there anyone in the club from the Charlotte, NC area? The member search has not been helpful to me. Thanks in advance.

On the Forum page there is a Hot Links drop down tab which has a detailed member search link. I used that and put in Charlotte and found Beziemer33.

Bump to top ...

Donald,
Thanks again for getting this underway. My current plans are to pack my tent for the rustic camping and bringing my folding bike. I also plan to rent a minivan, so I will be able to help with logistics and shuttles if needed. My interests will be exploring by bicycle and maybe short drives for sightseeing and restaurants. Hopefully some others will have similar interests.

Most likely not fishing,but.... who knows???

Definitely "in" for airplane stories at the campfire, meals, and bars(?) .... and meeting BAC members and families.

If all falls into place, I will head north to Burlington,VT (KBTV) for a few days after our BAC-in-the-hills. Happy to meet up for lunch with any VT area members.

Rap, I may swing by on my way home to San Antonio !!

We are still seven weeks out for this trip but wanted to bump this up.

If you like the outdoors and are within flying distance you should join us. Bring the kids, grand kids, nieces, nephews we have plenty of room at the camp ground. My minions wont be coming due to school issues but no problem it gives me more time to spend with our members. The North Mills Camp Ground has camper hook ups. If you own a camper and want to haul it I would suggest you reserve your site now, from what I've seen they fill up fast.

Still haven't made time to get a scouting trip in. I was looking at next weekend but decided to fly to the beach instead. Maybe April 9th weekend, if anyone is interested let me know.
