UPDATE: Beech Day 2009 and Northwest Region Fly-in Plans

Flight Levels
PLEASE NOTE that I have placed a new poll in the polls section (under General Resources),
or click here ..... https://vbl.beechaeroclub.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=NS-Polls&file=index&pollID=23

and would really appreciate some input as to what sort of events the membership would be interested in seeing planned. The responsibilities of being a Regional director can be overwhelming when it comes to planning Fly-ins (and even writing Regional reports for BAC Talk)

...............................so your comments and contributions are very much appreciated..... even needed!
If you would be interested in seeing several of the selections, you will have to "vote" several (as many as you want) separate times, since only one can be selected per voting session.
EDITED...I was wrong, you can only vote once, so you will have to "Post Comment" on the page that shows the poll results to make note of additional selections.

And, just to keep the thread from rolling off the page (at least until there is no more interest in the poll) perhaps you could each "reply" with "bump" or any other comments you may have, such as other ideas not already listed. I will put those in the poll as they are suggested!

While this poll is primarily directed to the Northwest members in hopes of getting some opinions for our region, all members are encouraged to take part, and will certainly go a long way for all Regional Directors to plan events we will all want to attend!!

Fly Safe!

Hello Thom,

Just one thought, being the Northwest EAA Fly-in is coming up shortly, July 8th through 12th, might be a good opportunity for some of the members to get together at an aviation event. I will admit I'm partial to this because my home field is almost right next door to Arlington :D but hey, a fly-in is always fun!

Mark Hoskins

Mark,
I had planned on trying to arrange that one too, having never been to it I wasn't sure what the venue was like.....Ideas? Willing to help out?

By the way, I noticed that you are MA-273. Mine is MA-272. I may remember that from before, but it would be interesting to get a pic of the "two siblings" together that probably have not seen each other for 42 years!!

It seems I could only vote once. I picked maintenance clinics first. I also like the camping idea, seminars and BBQ's at the hangar. For me, flyins are about the airplanes. Thanks Thom for your efforts. I look forward to meeting some of the NW members. Who is planning to attend Beech Day? I know I am. Thom, can we send an email out for those who don't check the website.

Ben

Thom,

I do remember that our planes are siblings, seems like we had that discussion before..... That would be interesting to get the two planes together! I'm not sure yet if I'll be able to attend at Pasco but I will be at Arlington.

Arlington is just a smaller version of Oshkosh or Sun and fun and it runs Wednesday through Sunday. There is aircraft camping or RV camping, showers, 2 hour air shows, forums, vendors, displays, and even a night theater. It's a lot of fun for anyone who enjoys aviation. We're based at Frontier Airpark (WN 53) which is about seven miles southeast, but we usually camp there just for the whole experience. (My wife LOVES aviation as well).

If nothing else it would be great to just get some members together (I could see about holding some good spaces) to enjoy the airshow and for an evening BBQ. I can certainly help out some...

Mark Hoskins

Oh yes, I remember discussing that before too, but I couldn't remember with who. I do now recall your airfield...looked at it on google earth and it really is impressive.

I think this one may be worth going ahead and setting up. What sort of "spaces" are we talking about? Anything you can do to assist is great. I can see about getting the BAC Banner if there is no objection to something like that by the staff, and as long as we have someplace to display it.

It sounds like you are going ANYWAY... so maybe it won't put you out too much. PM me, or reply back here (keeps the thread alive)

Ben,

Maybe the POLLS idea wasn't the right way to go. I did not know that only one vote was possible. But I was getting NO response to my cry for ideas in the news section. I'll check into it more,,,

Thom....

Thanks, yes, it's a nice airstrip with all five acre lots and it's lighted, and has glide slope PAPI's.

The spaces I mentioned are just aircraft parking places in the grass. Would be nice to keep everyone in one spot if possible and in a good close in location to all the action.

I don't think a banner would be any issue at all, but as time gets closer I can check with them and see.... that is if there is any interest from members?

Yes, I will be there, never miss it! It's the third largest EAA fly-in in the country, so it's great to have it so close by. If you haven't been, you really need to check it out!

Mark

I am really really hoping to see some of the NW members chime in and maybe we can get a list going for those interested in Arlington.
I just checked out their website.... Arlington EAA Website ...... and it pretty much made my mind up to make it. So, weather permitting it sounds like there is:

Arlington EAA Fly in possible attendees July 8th-12th, 2009
  • Thom & Dianne Smith (weather permitting)
  • Mark & co
  • John & Judy Radysh from BC in an RV
.......

Any more names? C'mon Northwest.... lets get to planning. If Mark is to try to "reserve" some spaces, we need to start a list of definites, probablies, and hopefuls.

This sounds like a great event.

Just received from the DOT FAA FAASTEAM some more info about BeechDay 2009. It came first class in the mail directly from the FAA, with the main jist being (in BOLD type) Aviation Safety Information. It says:

SE Washington Fly-in and Beech Day
Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 9:00 am

4 Safety Seminars, displays, demos, booths & much more, plus lunch for only $10! What are the common issues found during inspections? How can you save operating costs? Learn about STC products and mods available for your plane. When is it time to balance your propeller? Learn how better to communicate with ATC and take advantage of all the support that ATC offers.

So, It looks as if the seminars will indeed qualify under the FAA's FAAST program. I have driving directions if there is anyone that needs them (I sure hope I don't....I need VFR).

Anyone care to share their intentions as to attendance? I am trying to get the BAC banner, and permission to fly it (proudly). It would ne nice to know who hopes to make it.

Just 2 weeks away!!!

Fly Safe!

Thom-
I am planning to be there. Some things have to fall into place but I'm going to make the effort!

All for one!

Sounds like you are gonna be real busy just attending different fly-ins, reading your other posts!! Look forward to seeing you there, if you do make it. I'll be there, even if I have to drive.

arlington WA.

I for 1 am going to attend Arlington .I wont be flying but I'm pulling my RV down and staying for the entire time hope to see you there.

Ron,

Good to hear, see you there. I don't yet know if I'll have the BAC Banner or permisssion to fly it, but I'll be looking for everyone. And Arlington isn't that far either! :> If you made that one, that would make 3 Super IIIs there.

M.Hoskins is looking into holding some tiedown spots so we can all park together, but I have not heard back from him on that. I'd imagine that he'd need a number to hold, so we'll see.

John, make sure you look for the mouse brigade at Arlington, it shouldn't be too hard to find, it'd be nice to meet one of our neighbors to the north!

OK fellow Mouse drivers!

BeechDay is just 4 days away, and so far we have planning to attend:

  • Thom Smith.........LaGrande, Or
  • Russ Hunt...........LaGrande, Or
  • Ben Auker...........Bend, Or
  • John Foster.........Bend, Or (weather permitting)
  • Ron Sellers..........Troutdale, Or

Anyone else?

As of the time of this post, we are forecast to have GREAT VFR conditions, so giddyup! See ya there!

Hey, five planes ain't bad for our region. I'm even more excited now. I'm also interested to see another member in Bend. Did you contact him via email, Thom. I havn't seen him post. John in Bend if you read this, drop me a line. I noticed Chris wasn't on that list. Too bad, the Prez and RD in one place sounded interesting. Maybe next time Chris.

I've been looking at my schedule and it looks like the best time for me to host a fly-in at Sunriver would be in the end of June or mid to late August. I'd like to know when others can attend. Thom has listed all of the options available in sunriver in his Topic on the Home Page. I'm thinking BBQ at the airport to start. I can also have coffee and doughnuts for the early arrivals before we BBQ. After that, it's totally open. There is so much to offer in Sunriver, and if people are willing to make it an overnight gig, I can transport people to Bend to check out the Brewery's in the evening. There are plenty of hotels for all tastes and price ranges. We can have some breakfast and head back to the airport the next morning. When it comes time fuel the planes, I can get discounts for everyone in our group. So please respond and let me know when and what you would like to see. I should mention that we have a wonderful glider pilot and towplane on the field and I think I can work some deals if anyone is interested. We should schedule rides early to get the best rates. Also, the Sunriver Wings and Wheels fly in is July 25th for those who aren't going to Osh Kosh. More info to come on that, but mark it on your calendar. Yes that means that I have to work and won't be able to make it to Osh Kosh this year. I'm totally bummed. I guess that's how it goes when you get a job.

So about the Beech Day on Saturday... when are people planning to arrive and depart? Has anyone attended this event before? Will we be able to park together? Should we set up a meeting place and time? I'm planning on wheels up at 7:30 to 8 am which should get me to Pasco around 9:30. I'm hoping that's early enough for a free shirt. I love to collect things like that. I will plan on departing around 7 pm to get home as the sun sets. That is, if things are still going on 'til 7.

Thanks Thom for organizing this... it should be fun.
Ben

The link below has the agenda for Beech Day. First speaker is at 10:00, so I would guess 9:00 or so would be a good time to arrive.

http://www.nwbonanza.org/events.html

This event has always been at the soon-to-be-doomed Vista Field in the past, and this is the first time at PSC. I'm sure they will park us together - away from the Bonanzas!

It just wasn't in the cards this year. My Sierra is still in annual and won't be ready in time. I checked commercial flights to Pasco and the prices are just ridiculous and the drive time is a bit much for a one-day event.

So, I'll redirect my attention to Arlington. Maybe I can make that one.

Have a great fly-in and take lots of photos!

All for one!
