Spring Bahamas Fly in 2014?

Headed to Andromeda
It has been a few years since we did a Bahamas group trip. I recently discovered a great place on Andros. A close flight from Florida and reasonably priced. seascape Inn at Mangrove Cay. Nice quiet beaches, local Conch stands, Bonefishing, easy to catch Lobster, reefs and Blue Holes to Snorkel.
I like to extend my Sun-n-Fun trip by doing a few Bahama days before or after Sun-n-Fun. Anybody interested? We can meet and go over paperwork etc if anyone wants first timer advice. Not a big deal in and out of the USA but some planning is needed.

I would love to go, however I am a school teacher and can't go at that time. I will be in Florida the entire month of July then heading straight to oshkosh. If by chance you are making a trip while I am in florida let me know. I would love to learn how to fill out the paperwork correctly and fly over. Sounds like a great trip to andros.
BTW you said something about lobsters, do you dive? Do you know the dates for the season in the Bahamas?
 
I would be happy to help anyone with Bahamas flying questions. But July is usually a "head north" time for me.
 
Erick: Like you, I fly South to the islands in the summer. We generally fly that time of year due to my wife's teaching schedule but we are careful not to go too late due to the nasty blows. Last summer we had to go commercially as the weather was horrid every step of the way along the route. I won't be going this summeras I switched jobs and have only a week, but next summer we will be on our way. Maine this year. You will love the islands and Paul is a great resource for ideas. Give him a call as it is not hard to make the scene. He will steer you in the right direction.

There is a AOPA seminar on the 15th dealing with traveling outside the US to the various islands. It may prove helpful. Tom
 
I have been to most islands (with airports) in the Bahamas but so far have skipped Andros. On my bucket list. Would be great to have pointers on this island. I'll stay tuned to this thread and will plan to meet up on Andros (weather permitting). (I fly out of KHWO - North Perry - in Hollywood FL).
 
I have a few left on my list too. Mainly down south. Rum Cay. San Salvadore. Crookoe Island. Let's get get this thread going again when the time comes.
 
Here we are again. I am looking to burn some gas and do some Bahamas hopping around March 22,2014. Anyone bored that week?
 
I may be interested. My birthday is the next day, school vacation is that week for my daughter, and my co-pilot will have recovered from surgery by then and cleared to fly.
 
Hi Paul…I may be interested in this trp. I have wanted to fly my Sierra to the Bahamas for a long time now and this may workout for me. I have already received my FCC Radio License and an email form US Customs that my decal is on the way. I’m in the final stages on completing my Instrument Ticket so hopefully I can have this done prior to the trip. I do realize that all Bahamas flying is VFR, it’s the getting to and from Florida from Tennessee that always gets me.

Mary and I may be on board for this one. I just filled out the eAPIS and will work on the radio license. I know there is a listing of things required so I should find that a start reading it all again.
 
I will be in Florida (probably Ft. Pierce KFPR) on Friday evening March 21,2014. If any of you want to try for a group dinner/flight/briefing I think a review of the previous Bahamas flyin thread and the AOPA website would be a good place to start. Then we have an PM to get details nailed down. I am making my hotel plans and reservations now as this looks like a busy week. Whether this trip or another I would be happy to talk on the phone about the process.
 
Paul---do you still have the link or info for the FCC Radio Lic needed to fly to the Bahamas ? Have a friend that's interested.

things change.... And I think the operator permits need to be renewed every 5 years now. Might be worth checking. I think the station lic is permanent.
 
Paul is correct…I just received my radio licenses/permit a few weeks ago and they now must be renewed. I believe it use to be a onetime fee, however it’s like anything else dealing with the Feds and is now considered a revenue stream.

Pulling the radio stuff in one post - you need two licenses. As an individual you need a "Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit", these are for the lifetime of the holder. You also need a station license for the aircraft, these are good for 10 years (or until there is a change in ownership, this detail is often missed).

Technically somebody on the aircraft has to have the RROP so if taking two pilots and you might have only one or the other at some point it's best to do both. Technically every aircraft should have station license and at least one person on every aircraft should have a RROP. I have no idea how strict the Bahamanian customs guys are on this (it seems to have become a non-issue in Mexico lately).

Flying wise these are only needed to fly internationally and to operate an HF radio (you're highly unlikely to do the latter in a Mouse...).

Paul, which type of life preserver did you buy. I looked in Spruce and they have about a dozen different ones.
