London Bridge Luncheon - 15 November 2009

Ok Steve! Aaron, it's the BBQ place next door. Saves the trip time to town. Don't wear anything that the sauce will show on!

I just found out I have to go to Chicago for family reasons... not fun, wish I could stay here and go play instead.

Have fun guys and be safe...

Mark, it will be good to see ya!

That makes 4 airplanes and possibly 6 people so far. I was under the impression there were a few more members in the Southwest. Weather is supposed to be fabulous. Fuel looks like it will be $3.60/gal. so, plan to load up on gas as well as BBQ. Come on all you Southwesters, let's make it a party. I'm buying the lunch....... who says there is no free lunch? Well, sorta......

Marty,
Unfortunately my Super is still in pieces awaiting annual. Long story, but I won't likely be making it. Too bad, cuz the fin cap and light are installed and looks pretty darn cool! I will post some pics soon, maybe a link to a short video (if I can find time to make one) to show the operation.

Sorry about not being able to make Havasu.

Thom,

I am aware of your efforts and the particular difficulties you have up in the Great Northwest. You need not apologize. However, there are others down HERE in the Southwest that I am not going to forgive. It's a Sunday and the weather will be wonderful, the gas will be cheap and the lunch free. There is no excuse!

One for all!

Marshal,

Great, we are on a roll. I'll wait a bit to make the reservations.

It's Sunday morning and the weather in the Southwest is beautiful. Forecasted high in KHII today is 67 deg F with plenty of sunshine and surface winds out of the West at 10 kts. Should be able to brush up on your crosswind landing / take-off techniques today.

See everyone there.

Weather looks great! Unfortunately the Sierra is still in for annual. I was hoping my mechanic would have the plane done in time. Have a great day! Sorry I will miss this one!

Hi Marty, Thanks for hosting this! I am going to try and come, the sierra goes in for annual in a week or so. Hopefully, it will be out in time! I really want to see what you have been doing in the way of plane enhancements!

I'm on my way out the door for Montgomery...although the TAFs now have it pretty gusty in the whole area so be prepared. Needles is forecast 20G30@360 for most of the day and Blythe at 20G30@350 with a TEMO for [email protected]s like the winds will favor 32...

That puts the crosswind component from 10-20kts. It will be good practice...although hopefully the forecast is a little pessimistic or Havasu has a nice hole...although the local winds might be a bit more down the runway at 32. With the runway hard up against the hills on the east hopefully there is a break. Now really off to the airport, will have to scramble.

The KHII Luncheon is in the books. Windy conditions with headwinds going East from California and headwinds going West from Phoenix. This proves that Lake Havasu doesn't suck, it blows. Fortunately the winds change to the Northwest and mostly down runway 32 for landings and take-off. The Californian contingent wasn't aware of the mountain time zone line of demarcation and showed up an hour late. Head winds made that even worse and lunch didn't start until well in the afternoon MST. I'm sure all made up for the late arrivals on the trip back.

Second to land was Rick Spann from KSBA followed shortly by Marshal Whatley and Pete Vaughn from F70. Mark Goodrum was delayed by the wind a bit coming from KMYF followed by Steve Frieson from KCCB and Rick & Spencer Grove out of KRAL. Total was 6 members and 3 guests. Lunch at Waldo's BBQ on the field was good and a good value! Plenty of airplane talk abound and a pretty good time for all. Also a good value was fuel at $3.50/gal. with a special thanks to Desert Skies Executive Air (unicom 123.3) for their services and the discount on the 100LL.

Thanks to all that was able to make it. Hopefully this can be an annual event with an even bigger turn out next year. I'll have to ask one of the guys that can do that computer stuff post the pictures of the event.

One for all!

Yup - it was a good showing.

I should have known better on the timezone - but it is damn confusing and it's Arizona's fault. For about 7 months out of the year AZ and CA are on the same time because Arizona doesn't do DST - but just last weekend it flipped and AZ is back to an hour ahead...

On the wierd luck level... After I touched down back on Montgomery and was putting SuperMouse to bed when I was putting the cover back on the long wire ADF sense antenna broke at the front attach. Probably couldn't even have been a pound of pressure. Yet the wire held for 4 hours of flying to Lake Havasu and back. I have no idea what might have happened if it let go in flight - might have been benign, might have gotten tangled in the stabilator or the tension spring at the rear might have beat the sh*t out of the vertical stabilizer.

Then bending down to secure the cover my jeans blew out, seriously blew out. I guess I nursed them for too long (no jokes about size, I'm actually down almost 20# since New Years). So the failure gremlins were lurking at my tie down today. So I quickly quit doing anything to the airplane and got going home...

Great to see everyone! Time to think about the next one already...

This was a super fly in, Marty did a fabulous job on the arrangements, wonderful weather, deep fuel discounts, royalty treatment from the FBO, great food at the BBQ restaurant, great company, what else could you ask for. We're so lucky to have a Uncle Marty :) here in the West.

Great fly-in, Marty. Yep, I'm one of the clueless CA guys, thinking I'm fashionably late to arrive at 12:30 except it was actually 1:30!! Wonderful time, though - definitely worth the flight :-)
