Liberal, KS Pilgrimage

A few fun things to share about this fly-in.  First the museum treated us very well.  We were able to park on the ramp just out the back door, and they put on a lunch for the Beech Aero Club and EAA Club 377 that included roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, and pie.  It was all excellent!

A tour guide of the museum remembers when Beechcraft was operating the factory in the building and putting out our baby Beech aircraft.  There was a lady and man with the EAA club that were live time residents of Liberal and remembered when the building was built and when production began.  All three were eager to answer any questions I could think of.  A Sport is on display.

There is a very good display of aircraft. A couple note able ones.

I included a picture of the Bronco because if you haven’t read the book ‘A Lonely Kind of War’, I highly recommend it.  The Bronco was flown by Forward Air Controllers in Vietnam.  They coordinated the fighters and helicopter gun ships during the war.  At Low altitude over the target and usually came back full of holes if they came back.  They operated out of the fire bases on dirt strips and endured nightly rocket and mortar attacks.

The trip to Liberal is worth the time if you like air museums.

I wish Linda and I could have been there.  You scheduled this during school sports season and it is difficult to get away from watching grandkids.  Linda also returned the evening before this fly-in from deploying for 2 weeks as a Red Cross disaster volunteer in New Jersey.  She helped operate two shelters for flood victims.  If I were able to attend, I had planned on inviting my A&P's father who used to deliver new mice from the factory in Liberal.  I think it would have been interesting to hear what it was like.  Perhaps he may have had a story or two as well.  I am glad that those who attended enjoyed the day.
